CO Mt gaiUj Ssttffa. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY .AUGUST SO. 1887 CAUGHT AGAIN. In an effort to get out of the false hood it tried to palm off as truth the Portland Journal of Commerce of the 27th wriggles and twists through a column and a quarter of editorial space and tries to claw off in an effort to be funny. It won't do. Every one on the river knows you put your foot in it and the fact is too patent It is some times said that "a lie well stuck to is as good as the truth." Not in this case. Had you owned up when caught at it you would deserve Borne meroy from the great court of final appeal public opinion. As it is you deserve further crucifixion. In the column and a quarter of at tempted answer to The Astokian thoreis just one definite statement By a curious coincidence this one definite statement in a sea of slush is a,liejust, as plain, gross and palpable as the preceding one in the issue of the 20th. Here is the morsel Talk-1 ing of the Merom, our mendacious contemporary says: The sum of $750 ia the advertised charge for bar towage upon a vessel of her size. The facts are in direct opposition to the statement Probably so much the worse for the facts in the estima tion of the Journal of Commerce. Following is an exact transcript of the last towage schedule issued: To Ship Owners, Captains and (hose in terested in the Commerce of the Colum bia River: We hereby give notice that the -schedule of towage charges in and out over the Columbia river bar, under agreement between the owners of the tug boats Pioneer, Astoria and Columbia, has been extended to cover vessels of a larger reg ister than heretofore; and that from and after this date towage will be charged by the above-named boats in acoordanoe with the following SCHEDULE: For vessels of the inward undermentioned outw'bd. register tonnage. Load'd Bal'st. Not exceeding 800 9150 $150 $150 800 to 1000 200 175 175 1000 to 1200 225 200 200 1200 to 1400 .275 225 250 1400 to 1CO0 300 250 300 1C00 to 1800 375 321 350 1800 to 3000 425 375 400 Pilotage, when performed by the pilots from the tug boats above named, will be charged until further notioe at the rate of 45 per foot each way, in and out. Vessels coming into the river seeking, and leaving without finding business, will be charged pilotage as above, and only one rate of towage for service both ways. For giving orders to Tessels off the bar, the charge will be $100. POBTLAND TUQ BOAT COMPANY, H. W. COEBETT, D.P. Thojcson, Wh. S. Srasosr. Executive Committee. Geo. Fulyel, For Owners Astoria and Columbia. Pobtxand, Oregon, June 22, 188G. The tonnage of the Merom is 1,153 tons. A glance at the above will show that she comes under the class from 1,000 to 1,200. She was leaded: hence the charge was $225 inward and $200 outward, or $125; the item for towage in and out over the bar, in the bill which the master of the Merom signed, was for $425. Thus we nail lie No. 2. If there was anything else in the Journal of Commerce's article of the 27th to answer, it would be answered here and now. But there isn't The Journal of Commerce will please note that we don't maunder through column after column of space. A direct statement is made; then comes the proof as a clincher. In the above The Astobian quotes the exact words of the Journal of Commerce. Then it says the state ment is a lie. Then it proves it. And then it quits, and turns its atten tion to worthier subjects. Those who have wandered among the Booties, and gazed upon the summits of the great snowy range be fore the sunhad climbed high enough to turn the crystal rivers into silver and light up the plains with glory, have seen in the dim light of the dawning day the white peaks sudden ly gleaming as though the gates of the other world had opened and a flood of the radiance from within had been permitted to fall on the snow; so high up that the footseps of man and the dust of the world have never been able to contaminate it This glittering appearance is called by the Indians "Idaho," and the nearest the English language can express it is "the gem of the moun tains," with which name the territory seems to have been justly endowed. If Capt. Beecher, of Port Town send, is innocent of the charges made and pressed against him by the San Francisco Chronicle (and he is en titled to the benefit of the doubt), he ought to be able to recover about $40,000 in a libel suit against that in fluential journal He cannot afford to ignore them. There is too much pre cision and alleged detail about the charges to admit of silence. The Boom Strnck the Town. Says the Pigweed Banner: "The fore end of a mighty big real estate boom seems to have struok this town. Old man Daggett sold a corner lot yesterday for forty-two dollars, five of it cash down. Dud Dillon is put ting up a new henhouse and a new back gate. Sam Shockley has traded his place on the avenue for Zach Hill's team of black mules.
