Hammond Bcfor the National Scientist Convention. " We call thiB an 'age of progress, and so in many respects it is, but I dc not hesitate to declare most emphati cally that in many things that consti tute tbue happiness we are simply children. Let us see : We are startled constantly by the sudden death ol some man who seemed the picture of health. He thought he was well. Occasionally his appetite was poor, but then in a -few days afterward it was ravenous. He felt strange pains shooting through his body, but as they did not stay long he forgot them. His head pained him periodically, he was somewhat paler than common, and was unaccountably tired, but he felt comparatively well and vigorous. And yet he suddenly died ! It is a shame to our boasted civili zation. Dr. Hammond then instanced a number of persons well known to him who had died in great agony, although they had experienced few THE StJbDEN symptoms and little pain, and con tinued : "Why is it that so many little children are to-day staunted, and ap parently blighted for life? Because those early and inevitable diseases, measles, scarlatina, etc., have so weakened certain organs that nature cannot do her work, and the child languishes, perhaps dies. Look at the list of women who die in child birth, and why is it? Simply because their maternal organB have been so weakened by the most terrible of all diseases that they cannot.withstand the fearful sudden strain that is brought to bear upon them. How many women escajemonthly agonies ? And yet nature never intended that pain or inconvenience should attend the operation of her natural laws. The solemn and terrible fact is that men and women drag alone, die, and are buried, and their friends and the doctors say heart disease, apolexy, pneumonia, congestion, convulsions, when the cause lay far back of these tilings and was Bright's disease of the kidneys. That was the inward cause ; these are the outward mani- festations. Every disease must have a root, just as certainly as every plant. Kidney disease is the great root from which most modern dis eases, no matter wh at their name may. be. actually spring. "But because the kidneys are so important, so delicate, and so power ful, they require the greatest care in treatment. Ever Binco the day when Dr. Bright discovered the connection between morbid outward symptoms and internal decay, physicians, scien tists, and chemists have sought for a pure and powerful relief. Ithasbeen DEATH. a dimcult, often a fruitless search. Many remedies are now before the pub lic, but so far as I have been able to learn by chemical analysis" an? actual test, only one pos sessesabsolute merit and power. I have seen a number of cases, and learn ed from tmques- that puny child. tionable sources of many others, where the preparation Hunt's Rem edy has been almost remarkable in its results. One case ill particular was that of a prominent banker re siding in New York, whose family physicians, assisted by the best coun sel that city could produce, declared his case to be hopeless, and who was afterward restored to perfet health by the means I have named. I have not hesitated to use it freely among my patients, and from the results I have secured, I shall continue to do so." The doctor explained how men and women should live in order to meet this terrible malady, End instanced several additional cures which had followed the use of the remedy before referred to. In concluding, he said, : "If men and women could only be aroused to a realization of their actual danger; to a- sense of what is before them -unless they take prompt and proper action, and then by a correct course of life and the use of just the right means seek to prolong their HveB, most of the present suffering and untimely deaths might and would be avoided." In the bakeries of Boston the method of cooking beans is as fol fel fol eows: After being washed clean they are placed in barrels or tubs and soaked for several hours, after which they are put into large iron kettles and parboiled for half an hour or so. Then they are flooded with cold water to reduce the tem perature and put into earthen pots holding ten quarts each, with about five pounds of salt pork sunk to the general level in each pot. At night they are placed in ovens, from under which the fires are drawn, and are thus baked slowly ten or twelve hours. The slower the baking the better taste do the beans get. The ordinary price at the best places is 15 cents a quart, baked, but they are also sold for 12 cents. Quite a num ber of people prepare their own beans and send the pots to the baker, who charges 5 cents for baking them. Most of the smaller bake shopsj get their beans from large bakers, who also supply many of the restaurants. The scene on Sunday mornings at the bakeries which do a large business in beans is highly enter taining. All sorts of people come with their pails to get not only their beans, but their hot brown bread, sometimes with plums, their doughnuts and perhaps a can of milk. It is tliG most democratic crowd imaginable. The wealthy citizen elbows his way among the mechanics, children and servant girls. Frequently carriages with livened driveis are seen stopping before the bakehouse doors, as the delivery of beans is not practiced by many of the bakeries. "Winter and summer the same crowd me anders toward the bakery each Sunday morning, and the bakers say their business constantly in creases. One who has recently commenced to furnish beans on Saturday evening, says that his Sunday trade is not lessened there by. A western traveler notes that they are learning how to cook beans properly in that section of the country, and says Chicago ba keis are adopting the Boston sys tem. The "Oneatta." On the IGth, the little steamer Oneatta, belonging to Carson & Dolbeer, caught fire pt her wharf at Eureka, Humboldt bay, and burned so badly that it will not pay to rebuild her. She was about 80 feet in length, and origi nally a side wheeler. The One atta was built at Yaquina bay in 1873 by a man named Kellogg, but there was not traffic enough to pay her expenses, so she was brought to Portland and sold to the late Joseph Knott, who placed her op the Vancouver route in charge of Capt. James W. Troup, now master of the Alaskan. Jeems was then a triflo under 20 years of age, but he was a pilot of "the "Waxem family from Way back." The great August fire came in the same year, and the Portland people telegraphed to Vancouver that this city was burn ing up and to send over a fire engine if possible. The Oneatta had steam and the engine was brought on board of her with about twenty men. Troup" took his life in his hands when he went into the pilot house, for the little boat was groaning under her bur den of steam. She made the run from dock to dock in 73 minutes, the distance being 18 miles, which we deem the fastest trip ever made by a boat "of her size, at least in these waters. After Mr. Knott sold the Oneatta she was rebuilt. into a sternwheeler, which made her more convenient as a business boat, but she was never as fast as in her original form. She was taken down from Astoria to Humboldt bay in 1883 by the late Capt. A. D. Wass, and did not long survive her veteran com mander. 2fercury. The Grant county JVeics has news of a homicide at Mitchell, Crook county, last Sunday. Jis. N..Brackett was a looker on at a game of cards in a saloon between two men when a dispute arose be tween the players over a certain coin lying upon the table. Dur ing the argument Mr. Brackett said something at which Mr. Todd, the barkeeper, took offense, and finally dared the former to slap him, which he promptly did. Todd immediately began shooting, one ball grazing Brackett's neck, and the second shot entered his breast near the heart, when he fell and expired without a word. fiVnliannrp- "N"(vnr noint a nis- tol, even if you think you know it to De empty, at any person, in instances recorded in the news papers of persons accidentally shot, and seriously or fatally wounded in tins way.
