It is reported in Berlin that a
fresh attempt to kill the czar was
made on the 20th inst. A nihilist
disguised as an officer of the
guards approached the imperial
carriage on a journey from St.
Petersburg to Krasnoeselo, and
fired a revolver twice. The first
shot missed the czar, but the sec

A letter has been received at
the navy department from a
California gentleman asking to be
one of 175,000 Americans to
contribute 1 apiece to secure the
sum necessary to repair and.pre
serve the old flagship Hartford.
The writer says $20,000 can be
raised in California alone for this
purpose, and ho believes other
sections of the country would be
equally generous, and that the en
tire amount could, if some suitable
person were delegated to receive
it, be easily subscribed within
thirty days.
In an interview at Chicago on the
26th, with Senator Morgan of Al
abama, he gave it as his opinion
that there was no doubt of Cleve
land's renomination. The senator
said that the building of the
United States war ships on the Pa
cific coast was a giant stride in
the right direction, and he predict
ed that California would turn out
a vessel which would be a credit to
the naval armament of any nation.
He said he was the author of the
bill which made it compulsory to
build one of these vessels on the
Pacific coast, and he was satisfied
the movement was a good one and
in the right direction.

THE GEEAT TUMBLE WEED.
The Terror of the Kansas Prairies.
Mr. "W. N. Niederlander, the
prominent real estate man, has on
exhibition in the window of his
office a fine specimen of the cu
rious plant known as the "tumble
weed." This specimen was taken
from the old fair grounds last
year after the grounds were aban
doned. The plant is a mass of
branches, spherical in form, and so
tightly interwoven as to form al
most a compact mass. Like the
earth this globular mass of branch
es is flattened at the poles only
more so. The present specimen
is about five feet at its greatest
diameter. Mr. Neiderlander says
he has seen specimens fully twice
this size.
This weed once grew plentifully
through this country and Colo
rado. When green they present
a very pretty appearance, and
look more like a dwarf tree than
a weed. They are very danger
ous in case of a prairie fire, and
often dangerous in plain wind
storms when there is no fire. In
case of fire, the flames seem to
strip the plant of its leaves, and it
at once goes rolling before the
flaming hurricane, a perfect wheel
of fire. These revolving wheels
of fire will jump any ordinary
furrow or fire break, and carry the
fire into the timber or grass, as
the case may be. Nothing can
stop their progress but a river.
Into these they jump, leaping out
into the stream forty, fifty or sixty
feet, and go down with a hiss,
throwing up a column of steam
where they sink.
'I have seen hundreds of these
plants in Barber county and the
Sisquashie valley," said Mr. Nei
derland this morning. "When
started to rolling in a fire no ordi
nary horse can run before them.
Once, in the Sisquashie valley, I
only saved myself by driving my
team into the river, which 1 for
tunately reached just in lime."
In Colorado wind storms, these
weeds are also a source of much
danger. In Middle Park a few
yeara ?go a party of travelers were
suddenly overtaken by a storm.
Seeing what they supposed to be
a mass of huge bowlders in the
distance, they made for them,
thinking they would afford at
least partial shelter. To their
surprise, as they approached, the
bowlders suddenly broke loose
and commenced rolling toward
them at a furious rate, cutting all
sorts of curious capers, and gyrat
ing menacingly as they came.
At times they would strike an ob
struction and bound high into the
air, and again striking the ground,
resume their rapid circular motion.
The travelers put spurs to their
horses, and it was only by the
greatest effort that the' managed
to escape from the track of these
monsters. On examination, the'
found their supposed bowlders
were really immense weeds which
had been torn up by the roots by
the wind storm.
These weeds are so solid that
they are a great menace to man
and beast under such circum
stances. Impelled by a heavy
wind, they go with force enough to
kill a horse, and a human being is
in great danger if he cannot get
out of the track of these monsters
when they .are running before a
hurricane or in case of a prairie
fire. Wichita Journal.

The Chemical Composition of Man.
From a chemical rioint of view.
man is composed of thirteen ele
ments, of which five are srasses
and eight are solids. If we con
sider the chemical composition of
ajnan of the average weight of
o pounds, we will find that he
is composed in a lanre tiart of
oxygen, which is in a state of ex
treme compression, in fact, a
man weijrhimr 154 nounds contains
97 pounds of oxygen, the volume
01 wnicn, at ordinary temperature
would exceed ysu cubic feet. The
hydrogen is much less in quantity,
there beincr less than 15 Dounds.
but which in a free state would
occupy a volume of 2,S00 cubic
leet.
The three other grasses are nitro
gen, nearly four pounds; chlorine,
about 26 ounces, and flourine,
three and a quarter ounces. Of
the solids, carbon stands at the
head of the metalloids, there be
ing 4b pounds. Next comes
phosphorus, 26 ounces; and sul
phur, 34- ounces. The most
abundant metal is calcium, more-
than three pounds; next, potassi
um, 24- eunces: sodium, 24- eunces:
and lastly iron, 14; ounces. It is
needless to say that the various
combinations made by these thir
teen elements are almost innumer
able. MURDERED BY PREJUDICE.
Thousands of men die every day
who might be saved. Prejudice has
murdered many a man and woman.
If it were believed that the sum of
disease could be reduced by physic
much would ho gained. The night
mare of death would not frighten us
as it does. In our modern civiliza
tion we ought reasonably to expect
disease to settle upon us because we
do so much to attract it ; because we
so often and so steadily expose our
selves to it. At the same time we
all ought to understand, as a part of
our rudimentary education, that to
save ourselves from the offecta of
such exposure some kind of fortifica
tion should be built around our vital
forces lest the enemy carry us, as it
were, by a sudden onslaught. For
many years the unprejudiced have
used BnAJrDRETn's Pills in this way
and they have proved a most effect
ive wall against the approach of dis
ease. Stop the daily murders we
had almost said suicides by using
these pills. They speak for them
selves as they act. "When every
thing else has failed BaAKDnrra's

be had at every drug store.
