Only Pive Merchant Mills on the Lower
Columbia, and the Eeason Why.
The total annual product of
loirs of tho Astoria timber district
is now about 75,000,000 feet and
the market is chiefly at and near
Portland, where the first mills
were built and where they have
continued. At Astoria there are
now two mills, the Trullinger
mill. caDacitv 50,000 feet per day,
and the ClatEon mill, capacity 60,'-
000 feet per day. The Knappton
mill, directly opposite Astoria,
saws 70,000 feet per day. The
Skamokawa mill saws 70,000 feet
per day, and the Oak Point mill
25.000 feet oer day. It. will be
seen that but little of the timber
in the Astoria district is worked
up at home. Most of the annual
product goes out in the rough
form of Jogs, and the profit of
manufacture is lost to the city.
The cause of this is that the
capital and productive energy of
the country is otherwise engaged,
finding up to this time profitable
employment in the salmon indus
trv. Small notice has been taken
ofthesreat timber resource and
of the rare and peculiar local ad
vantages for lumber manufacture.

The lands are along the southern

price paid was $1,000,000 in cash.
The lands are to be held until the
price-of lumber greatly increases

The retail grocers of New York
are preparing for a vigorous ciu
sade against speculators and oth
ers who give away prizes or
gifts with articles ot food. These
speculators have been in the habit
of buying vegetables from up-river
boats, which they placed in bogus
farm wagons, which never left
their place in the market. The re
sult was that legitimate farmers
were not able to compete with
them.
