Our Lumber Market.
The mills of Oregon and "Wash
ington sell their product in four
different markets. The local de-
j mand is large, a still larger supply
goes to Californi , there is a.con
siderable foreigu trade to South
America, Australia, the Sandwich
islands and China, and a new trade
has just sprung up in the western
states. It is now less than three
years since the first carload of Or
egon lumber was shipped east as
an experiment, and less than two
years since the business was be
gun practically. Our timber finds
favor in the markets wherever in
troduced, and readily brings better
prices than the northern pine. It
is a fact well known that the tim
ber supply in Michigan and other
northern states is nearly exhausted,
and it is believed that the western
states must soon draw their main
supply from the Pacific coast. If
this should come about (and it now
seems almost a crrtainty) the tim
ber interest at and about Astoria
must grow to be of prodigious val
ue. Railroads would soon put it
on an even keel with Portland, and
even now it is in a position to com
pete for eastern business. The
product of the Oak Point mill,
which is in the Astoria districtynow
goes east, and the proprietor, who
also owns and operates a mill at
Portland, finds quite as much
profit in his Oak Point mill as in
his Portland mill. In two years the
eastern lumber business has devel
oped from an experimental state
to the monthly shipment of 5,000,
000 feet, and it gives promise of
multiplying many times in the
next lew years.
A great business at this time is
the coastwise and foreign trade.
Rapidly as production grows, the
demand grows with it. Within
the past four years thirty-five mer
chant mills have been built be
tween the California line and Brit
ish Columbia, making altogether
nearly one hundred mills. Not
one of these is idle, and some of
them are running day and night.
Four-fifths of their whole product
goes by sea, and, be it remembered,
Astoria is better situated for the
ocean business than any part on
the whole Pacific coast. Ships
sailing from Puget sound have a
longer voyage than ships sailing
from Astoria. While those pomts
equally near with Astoria to ban
Francisco, cannot make use of
large ships, but must employ
schooners, which are verv much
more expensive.
There is no.more favorable sit
uation for ship building and other
industries using large quantities
of timber than Astoria. Besides
the timber supply, there is the ad
vantage of tidal variation, with
proximity togeneral machine shops,
etc. Astoria is certainly destined
to be not only a very important
seat of lumber manufacture, but as
well of general manufacture in the
lines which make a large use of
wood. "yl. II." in Uregoman.
