The Timber Value of Olatsop Oounty.
Astoria has become so associated
in the public mind with the salm
on industry that her other re
sources are very generally over
looked. It seems to be forgotten
that before salmon packing was
ever thought of Astoria was an
active town, 6nding a sufficient
support from the adjacent and
tributary country. Her resources,
entirely apart from salmon and
general commerce, are so many
that to review them all in a single
article would be quite impractica
ble; and it is proposed at this
time to treat only of one, the
greatest, or at least the most avail
able, namely, timber.
By reference to a sectional map
of the country about the mouth of
the Columbia river it will be seen
that Astoria is practically the cen
ter of a v?st forest region. Ex
cepting the tide marshes border
ing all thewater courses, and the
Clatsop plains, which lie near the
ocean, there is no country within
fifty miles of Astoria that is not
timbered, for the most part heavi
ly, and everywhere with the varie
ties most valuable in the manu
facture of lumber. Fir, spruce
and cedar are the prevailing tim
bers, with a good deal of hem
lock and a general mixture of
maple and other growths, having
for the present at least small com
mercial value.
The central position of Astoria,
with reference to this vast tim
bered country, is not geograph
ical alone. Small rivers and tide
sloughs penetrate in many direc
tions, carrying navigation, if not
to the heart, at least to many sec
tions of this wide timbered region.
From each and all of these water
courses, the currents, through the
variations of tide, lead to Astoria.
It is never necessary to tow
raits against the stream to this
natural depot, and while here they
are absolutely protected against
dangers common elsewhere.
Logging in the Astoria timber
district is, by no means a new in
dustry. For twenty years it has
been pursued with more or less
activity, and at this time it em
ploys certainly not less than 1,500
men. Any estimate of the qmm
tity and value of the timber taken
out up to this time would bu a.
mere guess, but it would run into
many billions of feet. The annual
product is certainly not short of
75,000,000 feet, and it is probablv
nearer 100,000,000 feet. Great as
is the quantity ot timber repre
sented by these figures, it is so
small compared to the supply that
it may truly be said that up to this
time scarcely -a mark has been
made on the timber area.
The forests, which begin before
the limits of Astoria are past and
which, a distinguished writer once
said, seemed trying to crowd the
town into the bay, are so dense
that road making is for the most
part impracticable. Only two or
three roads lead out from Astoria,
and as they lead nowhere in par
ticular, while the water routes lead
everywhere, communication is al
most entirely by boats, which go
at odd times and irregular inter
vals. To visit the various places
where logging is in progress is
therefore an enterprise calling for
time and patience, and in the re
searches whose results are set forth
below both were employed.
The -quality of the timber in the
Astoria district, it has not escaped
notice, is exceptionally good.
Compared with the timber of Pu
get sound and that on the Willam
ette river it is found to be larger
on an 'average, of fine grain and
freer from knots and other blem
ishes. Why this is so I am not
able to say. By any expert famil
iar with the whole country the fact
will Jbe admitted, and it finds a
practical demonstration in the fact
that logs from this section (even
with a heavy towage rate to
pay) bring a slightly higher
price than logs on the upper
river and on Puget sound. Gov
ernor Pennoyer, a lumber manu
facturer and well known as a prac
tical timber expert, told me a few
days ago that for his very best logs
he came to the Astoria district and
willingly paid a small advance up
on the current quotations for logs
elsewhere. The product of the
Astoria, Knappton and Skamoka
wa mills is always of the superior
qualities of lumber, commanding
at roriiaiiu, OUll X'tiiui-iaw nuu
elsewhere the very top of the mar
ket. The country about Astoria en
joys practical immunity from the
wild fires, so disastrous elsewhere
in the northwest, through its prox
imity to the ocean. At brief in
tervals it is swept by dense ocean
fners and is thus maintained in a
state so moist that fire will not
readilv take hold. In these later
days when settlement is penetra
ting evervwhere, exposing the
timber more and more to fires, this
is a very important matter. "A.

WILY AH SIN IN THE EAST.
A stout young man with a red face
tumbled down the stairway of a base
ment laundry on Third avenue. He
carried a bundle of soiled linen
wrapped in a newspaper. He placed
the bundle on the counter and said:
''Give me twenty cents on these."

"Two shirts, four undershirts, six
Collars and two nrrirs of RnnVq " snirl
the young man, "and don't you for-

The laundryman peered into the
bundle and seemed to be satisfied.
He opened a drawer, took out two
dimes and a pawn ticket and passed
them to the man. The latter pock
eted tho coins and dashed up stairs.
Here he found a companion awaiting
him. Tho two steered for a beer sa
loon on the opposite side of the way.
"Do you do pawnbroking business,
too?" asked an old gentleman in the
laundry of tho Chinaman.
"No," said the Chinaman. "He my
fliend. I lend him money."
Mayor's marshal Tom Byrnes, to
whom the old man told the story,
said: "I have heard that the China
men are in the habit of advancing
money upon articles given to them to
bo laundried. I have also been told
that thev charge a sliphfc rata nf in
terest. The police kuow of cases

many backyards of linen and found
receivers among tho Chinese laundry
men." "What becomes of the property?"
the marshal was asked.
"Oil, the Chinese are ta fly as they
make 'cm. The shirts and collars are
laundried anew, packed up in boxes
and sent out west, where they find
their way into anction honses. There
tho articles are treated lo a dose of

"Can the law reach them for acting
as pawnbrokers withont a license?"
"Yes; but the tronble wonld bo to
