I was afflicted for several years with disordered Liver, which resulted in a severe attack of Jaundice. I had good medical attendance, but it failed to restore me to the enjoyment of my for mer health. I then tried the most renowned physi cians of Louisville, Ky., but all to no purpose, where upon I was induced to try Simmons Liver Regulator. I found immediate benefit from its use, and it ulti mately restored me to the full enjoyment of health." A. H. Shirley, Richmond, Ky. Some of the Commercial Products Prom the Commonest of Carbons. "So 3011 eat coal, do you?" said a smart high school girl in Hagan's a few nights ago to a beardless young man with a high collar, who was buying ice cream. "Aw, eat coal? What do you mean, Miss Ethel?" replied the un sophisticated youth, with astonish ment. "Wiry, I see that you take vanil la flavoring'," replied the h. s. girl, with a smile. "Weally, Miss Ethel, I don't aw, exactly understand you," the young man with the high collar re sponded. "Why, vanilla flavoring is made almost entirely from coal tar," re plied the h. s. girl, and she was just starting with "Wiry, we learned all that in our chemistry class last " when the fire bell commenced ringing, and she stopped for some reason or other, and an inventory of all he knew was lost. The vanilla idea was a good one, and the reporter asked Dr. F. L. Slocum, the chemist, about it. "Is vanilla extract a product of coal tar?" said Dr. Slocum. "Why of course it is, and a better arti cle is furnished from coal tar than from the bean itself. Vanilla is made from totolu, one of the products of "coal tar. It is used for flavoring ice cream and con fectioner', and it is a chemically pure product, which vegetable vanilla extract is not. "There are a good man pro ducts from coal tar that the ma jority of people know nothing of," continued Dr. Slocum. "Their number will reach into the thou sands, and research into this par ticular branch of inorganic chemis try is bringing new and rich re wards to scientists every year. One of the hydro-carbons distinct ly produced from coal tar is be zole. This is the base of magenta, red and blue coloring matters, and of the oil of bitter almonds. This oil formerly came entirely from the vegetable product from which it takes its name; but now it is to a large extent made from benzole, and a chemically pure product is secured. The vegetable oil of bit ter almonds contains a certain amount of prussic acid which is a poisonous substance. "Tolune or tolulo is another pro duct from coal tar, which is the basis of a great many chemicals. Benzoic acid, which used to be made almost entirely from plants, is now readily made from toluene. Carbolic acid is another product of tolulo. The latter is a colorless fluid with a smell very much like crude petroleum, while carbolic acid and salicylic acid, two of its products, ire far from being sweet smelling compounds. Yet this same tolulo is the basis of a num ber of very fragrant products. Wintergreen oil, much purer than from the plant, and generally pre ferred by confectioners and others who use it, is one; oil of cinnamon, cinnamic acid, oil of cloves are among-the middle products which are in great demand." As yet the products of coal tnr have not been used as medicines to any great extent except as dis infectants, but from experiments now "going on it is hoped to pro duce pure quinine from chinolene, one of the coal tar products, and scientists say it is only a question of time when all the alkaloids known, and probably others not now known, will be made from coal tar. It would take a good sized book to even begin to give an idea of the commercial products alone of coal tar. Nearly every known col or except cochineal, red and indi go blue are made, and the latter was produced after nine years of experiment by the eminent Ger man scientist, Byerof Munich, but the manufacture was so expensive that it has never been done ex cept for scientific purposes. The logwood and madder dyes of our grandmothers' days are rarely seen in the market now, owing to the cheapness with which thej are manufactured. Red ink, which formerly was made almost exclu sively of carmine, is now made from cosine, one of the numerous coal tar products. JPittsburq Dis- 2)(itch. Torpedo boats are now being built of phospho bronze. Cruise of the Bear. Sax Fkaxcisco, Aug. 22. Of ficers of the bark JPcarl, which has arrived from Behring sea, confirm the statement tnat tne revenue cutter Hear was detained in Ouna laska for several days to make re pairs to iron bow plates, which had become loose from the slack ening of bolts, thereby causing a slight leak. As the Hearts draught of water was too great to permit beaching her, a wood cofferdam was built round the bow and nec essary repairs effected. After cruising around Seal islands, wait ing the arrival of the JRiciard Jtust, the Jftar left for the Arctic July 2, and met ice off the St. Lawrence islands. Her course led to St. Michael's and on the 7th of July she arrived at that place. The officers found Fuller, mur derer of archbishop Seghers, and Lieut. Kennedy, who had been sworn as United States deputy marshal at Ounalaska, arrested him on a warrant issued by United States commissioner Johnston, and he was taken on board the cutter. On the Jjear's return south Fuller will probably be conveyed to Sit ka for trial. Three witnesses are also on board the JBear, and they will be kept to give cxidence. The general opinion at St. Mich ael's recardinc Fuller is that he is insane. Captain Murray of the bark Pearl spoke two sealing choon ers. The Lollk Fairchih of Xo va Scotia, was seen about 5-1 dejj. north 170 deg. west. She had 1,900 sealskins. After that the schooner AUie I. Affer, of Port Townsend, was spoken. She had 900 sealskins aboard. She report ed that the schooner AilcJc had been spoken shortly before with 30 seals. A Ilealtlo' Stociacli Is a blessing for which j:uousarids of our tjs peptic countrymen and women sigh in vain, and to obtain which swallow much medicine unavailingly. For no ailment probably are there so many alleged remedies as for dyspepsia. The man of humbug is con stantly glutted with the dollars and dimes of those u ho resort to one nostrum after an other in the vain hope of obtaining relief, at least, from this vexatious and obstinate mal aday. Experience indicates Ilostetter's Stomach Uittcrs as a means of eradicating dyspepsia, in which a firm reliance can be pi-iced. No remedy has in three decades and over established such a reputation, none has received such unqualified professional sanction. Jt is an admirable invigorant, be cause It enriches the blood, and not only this, but it thoroughly regulates the bow els, kidneys and bladder.
