The Alaska Schooners.
San Francisco, Aug. IS.
The Alaska Commercial compa
ny's steamer 7. Paul arrived to-
jday from Ounalaska.- Between
the middle of June and August
Sth, on which date the St. Paul
left Ounalaska for this city, ten
vessels were seized by the Jittsh
and special agents "Tingle and
Loud for violating the law prohib
iting scaling in Behring sea, east
of the Russian line." After the
close in the season in the Pacific,
there was a meeting of captains of
sealing schooners, both British and
American, and it was then agreed
to fish on the American side of
Behring sea, but to give the Rus
sian half, guarded b- several
swift cruisers, a wide berth.
One by one the schooners
worked northward and in the
course of a few weeks about thirty-five
vessels, eighteen from this
city and the rest from Victoria,
had entered American waters.
They swarmed up around Ouna
laska, and the vigil otJiiish the be
gan. In a very short time the ves
sels were detected, one bj' one, in
sealing, and on one day, August
7th, three were gathered in. It is
estimated that the aggregate value
of all schooners, cargoes and out
fits, is not much below 100,000.
