The eminent scientist and author,
Dr. Joseph F. Edwards of Philadel
phia, i elates the following -wonderful
experiences :
m "During my term as resident phj-si-rian
in the medical wards of the
Philadelphia Hospital, it was a com
mon occurrence for an ambulance call
to be received from one of the down
town station houses. Upon reaching
the place designated, we would be

twenty-six hours,
and then die. In a majority of these
cases a post-mortem examination
would reveal a most horrible state of
affairs which I will explain hereafter."
"A lady in apparently good health,
who rarely complained, and then only
occasionally, of some slight and tran
sient ill-feeling, as nearly every one
does at some time or other, took a
long walk with her husband, and
upon returning home, feeling particu
larly well, went to her room to remove
Iter bonnet, and, while standing in
front of the mirror, fell lo the floor in
a convulsion, followed by twenty-four
hours of unconsciousness and death
without a return to consciousness. A
post-mortem examination revealed
the true cause in a most horrible
form."
"A young married man for years
suffered from dyspepsia, for which he
consulted many physicians. After
suffering in this way, and having no
other S3'inptoms of disease, he awoke
one morning to find a very slight
swelling, scared' more than a pufli
ness under one eye. In less than a
month he was dead.
Now the real and terrible cause of
all these deaths was Bright's discasa
of the kidneys, and they might all
have been avoided had the unforlun
ale victims known what a horrible
malady was fastened upon them. But
Bright's disease has no symptoms of
its own. It steals into the system like
a unci, anu deceives its victim uy
showing the sj'mptoms of nearly every
ever' otlier disease.
But what can be done?
Take it in time.
If you feel unaccountably tired ; if
you have peculiar pressing pains; if
your appetite is uncertain; if your
head aches occasionally ; if your sleep
is irregular; if the fluids passed arc
profuse or scanty do not delay, but
use the best known means for escaping
agony and deatli be
fore it is too late.
For this purpose
there is a remedy,
and the only onej
that has ever proven
absolutely certain.

fession. There are thousands of men
and women to-day who enjoy perfect
health who would be in their graves
had it not been for this wonderful
remedy, and there are thousands of
others who require it without an
hour's delay. This is no idle state

"Walk Chalk is the name of a post
office in Armstrong count'. P. P.
Burford, a Republican, had been
postmaster there for several years,
but was removed eighteen months
ago and a Democrat named David
Botfser was appointed in his place.
A few days ago postofiice inspect
or Garroway was on his way to
the village of "Worthington and
had to pass through Walk Chalk.
He saw the sign "Postofiice" on a
building, and passing on a short
distance was surprised to see an
other postofiice sign on another
building. He was not uware that
there were two postofiices in "Walk
Chalk and he got out of his wagon
to seek information. He went in
to the building bearing the second
sign. It was Burford's store.
"Is this the postofiice?" the in
spector asked of a man in the store
who was Burford, the proprietor.
"This is the Republican post
office," replied Rurford.
"Well, I am the postofiice in
spector," said Garraway.
"Then 3'ou had better go down
to the other postofiice. That is
the Democratic one," replied Bur
ford. The inspector then told the ex
postmaster that in keeping the
sign up announcing that the post
office was in his store he was vio
lating the postal law, and making
himself liable to punisment. Bur
ford was advised to remove the
sign and save himself trouble.
"WVll, Mr. Inspector," he said,
this is in;,' sign, and l intend to
leave it where it is. Bowser will
only be postmaster two ye rs
longer any how, and I'll only have
to put the sign up again if I take
it down. I guess we'll leave it
where it is."
The inspector went on his way.
In returning a couple of days later
he found that Burford still had
the postofiice sign up. lie still
refused to remove it, and said that
he was taking all the letters he
could get to spoil Bowser's busi
ness, and carried them to Kittan
ning and mailed them. The ex
postmaster was arrested and
brought before United States com
missioner Coulter, who held him
nnder bail to appear in the United
States court to answer. The pen- j
alty for maintaining the false s-in i
300, and for the confessed vio'.i
tion of law in receiving letters and
carrying them it is much heavier.
The sign on Burford's "Republican
postofiice" at Walk Chalk was still
uj) at last accounts.

TURKISH WOMEN.
Turkish women are utterly irre
sponsible beings in their husbands'
eyes, and they are treated in
most ways like little children
provided " for comfortably, fed,
clothed and amused, but not edu
cated. While naturally, docile
and intelligent, they become
shrewish through the ignorance in
which they are kept. They are
generous "with that unthinking
generosity that causes a child to
five away the most expensive toy,
not knowing the cost. A Turkish
woman will, at any time, if the
caprice seizes her, give away her
fine jewels. Their hospitality is
too well known to require men
tion. They always have coffee
and sweetmeats served for any and.
all guests, and when they feel that
the visit has lasted long enough
they clap hands and the caffeejee
brings a second cup of coffee, and
that is the signal. No guest can
stay longer than to drink this.
Sometimes the time between
drinks is decidedly short.
The women and the children do
not undress at night, but add a
wadded night robe to the clothes
they already have on and sleep
thus, summer and winter. They
close all the doors and windows,
and sleep several in one room, and
doubtless would suffer dreadfully
from the confined air were it not
that Turkish carpenters have
never heard of the plumb line, and
so windows and doors all have
crevices, which supply ventilation.
The tales of oriental magnificence
fail to impress one who has visited
the best harems, for they are one
and all pictures of dirt and wanton
extravagance. The only great
display is the amount of rugs and
jewelry. On the floors of the
general room for the women, or
the private suites, it is all the
same cigarette ends, candies,
nutshells, necklaces, gold-embroidered
slippers and sashes, and, in
short, all kinds of disorder and
dirt. And the women are alvas
eating, smoking, or lolling about
on the divans.- Brooklyn Muyu
