Ottawa, Aug. 15. A sensa
tional statement was made here
last night by a gentleman who
arrived from Bactouche, a small
villiage on the Gulf of St. Law
rence shore, New Brunswick. He
stated that one night about eight
dajs ago, while sleeping in a house
in the viUagc, himself and wife,
were awakened by two loud re
ports, but they heard nothing iur
ther, and concluding that tho
noise was merely peals of thunder,
went to sleep again. In the morn
ing they were told that they had
been reports of two cannon shots,
which were fired from a cruiser in
pursuit of American fishing
schooners. The second shot struck
one of the schooner's masts, which
fell with the sails, and turned
the schooner completely over on
her side, when she filled and sank
immediately. Every man on
board went down. The lives lost
number 12 or 15. The affair, it is
stated, was witnessed by a couple
of Bactouche fishermen, who were
off shore in a row boat, and who
carried tho news home. After
seeing the terrible result of her
shots, the cruiser put to sea and
was soon lost in the dark. The
gentleman says every effort is be
ing made to keep it quiet.
Buffalo Bill Done Up in English.
The En
published
lish Court Journal,
iv "authority of her
royal highness," has this intellt
gent and complimentary menton
of an esteemed American citizen:
Hon. W. F. Cody (Buffalo Bill)
was a close companion of a man
named Boone, who discovered
Kentucky in 1869. Mr. Cody mar
ried the daughter of a distin
guished gentleman known as Sit
ting Bullfrog. Cody was twice
governor of Chicago and was at
one time mayor of the Arkansas
legislature. He served in the
confederate army, in the command
of General Butler, who so gallant
ly defended New Orleans against
the threatened invasion of the fed
eral general Longstreet. After
the war Mr. Cody went to congress
from the province of Detroit and
introduced a measure for the re
lief of the citizens of Buffalo,
which gained for him the name ot
Buffalo Bill.

CRUCIBLE.
About twenty yoars ago discovered a'Uttla
sore on my cheek, and C doctors pronounced
it cancer. I have tried a number of physicians,
but without receiving any permanent benefit.
Among tho number were one or two specialljtt.
The medlcno they applied was lite flra to tha
sore, causing Intense pain. I saw a statement
In the papers telling what S. S. S. had done for
others similarly afflicted. I procured soma at
once. Before I had used the second bottle tha
neighbors could notico that my cancer was
healing up. My general health had been bad
for two or threo years I had a hacking cough
and spit blood continually. I had a severs
pain In my breast. After taking six bottles of
S. s. S. my cough left me and tgrew stouttr
than I had been for several years. Ky cancer
has healed over all but a little spot about tho
size of a half dime, and It Is rapidly disappear
ing. I would advlso every one with cancer to
give S. S. S. a ralr trial.
