ASTOSIA. OllEGON:
WEDNESDAY.
.AUGUST 17, 1887
An estimate of the population of
China, based upon official data, puts
it at 332,000,000, as against 418,000,
000 estimated in 1812.
The government of the United
States owns 75,000,-000 worth of
buildings, and has not a cent of in
surance upon the whole lot
The breach between the united la
bor party and the socialistic labor
party is rapidly widening, and only
the'complete surrender of theformer
will effect a settlement
I m
The remarkable success of the pro
hibition movement in Georgia is as
cribed by the Augusta Chronicle to
the fact that it is purely moral and
economical and has no political sig
nificance. Russia has increased its debt ten
fold since the Crimean war, fighting
but one great war in the interval, and
since the Russo-Turkish war closed
the czar's government has borrowed
about 8100,000,000 a year.
A man buying a 1,000 four-and-a-half
bond now will pay 1,080 for it.
The interest for four years (they are
due September 1, 1891) will amount to
8180 so that his gain for holding the
bond till maturity will be 8100 only.
Senator Dolph thinks that Sher
man and Hawley would be a good
presidential ticket in '88, but that if
Blaine were nominated he would get
substantial support from men in New
York who were opposed to him in '84.
Ex-senator Davis, of West Vir
ginia, looks upon Ben Harrison, of
Indiana, as the strongest man the Re
publicans can nominate for president
and the one who would give the Dem
ocrats the most uneasiness.
Prom careful investigations by Ohio
newspapers, it seems that 75 per cent
of the labor vote of the state will come
from the Democratic party, and 25
per cent from the Republicans. It is
thought 40,000 to 50,000 labor votes
will be polled.
We get a strong picture of what the
condition of labor in Holland must be
from the introduction of a bill in the
states-general to prevent the employ
ment in factories of children for un
limited hours, and of women having I
children less than a month old.
The New York Independent of last
week has a double-leaded editorial sub
stantially Muling down the mugwump
flag, tinder which it has all along been
sailing, and hoisted that of John
Sherman. It has been cautiously
feeling its way in this direction 'for
some time past
i
Theke is no doubt that the pro
tective tariff policy is more firmly
rooted in American opinion than ever
before in the history of the republic
The protective sentiment has grown
and spread with the industrial devel
opment of the country and with the
extension of mining and manufactur
ing interests in states whioh formerly
were exclusively agricultural
Sekatob Aiiiiisox's comment on his
own presidential candidaoy is as fol fel fol
eows: "Well, I suppose that I must
submit There is every possibility
that a western man might prove ac
ceptable, both to the convention and
to the people, but that matter cannot
come up for consideration until a
year from now, and the whole situa
tion may be changed before that time."
A New Yobk dispatch says: "At
tempts to purchase salmon in the
Liverpool market bring to hand the
following cable prices of values in
that market, showing that holders
there are fully alive to the situatien:
Columbia river pack of 1886 is held at
30s, which is said to be equivalent to
32.10 and $2.12 per dozen here, and
Frazer river pack at 28s, equivalent to
82"
The Isle of Man steamer Queen
Victoria left the tail of the bank op
posite Greenock for Liverpool July
30th and made the passage in the
short period of nine hours and twenty
three minutes, actual steaming time.
This shows a speed of 22 knola, or
26.62 miles per hour, and she thus
proves herself to be the fastest passen
ger steamer in the world, being only
excelled in speed by the latest torpedo
boats.
A statement has been made by a
Mr. Griffin, of the New York board of
trade, showing in part only the enor
mous sum sent back to the united
kingdom to relatives and friends of
emigrants who have gained homes,
here. Prom 1848 to 1885,both years in
clusive, there was forwarded from
America through certain bankB and
mercantile houses $155,092,935, a large
part of which eventually passed into
the pockets of Irish landlords. In
the last eix years covered by the table
the contributions were grdatly in
creased, the annual average being 87,
425,174. There is said to be a good deal of
interest in the alleged contest for con
trol of the Northern Pacifio at the
September election. A fight is report
ed being made by Elijah Smith in the
interest of the Union Pacific, Oregon
Transcontinental and Navigation com
pany and the Wisconsin Central,
which wants to get control of the
Northern Pacific's Chicago business.
Smith has issued a circular to the
stockholders, signed by himself and
a number of broker firms of New
York and Philadelphia, who have
stock belong to the Union Pacifio
partly in their own names. There is
no doubt but that these parties are
large holders of Northern Pacific, the
Oregon Transcontinental company it
self holding 135,000 shares, and it is
on this ground .that Smith asks for
proxies. The fact is concealed, how
ever, that these gentlemen have a par
amount interest in the companies
which are antagonistic to the North
ern Pacific, and if they get into power
their intention is to use the Northern
Pacific to benefit these rival concerns.
Unnecessary Misery.
Probably as much misery comes
from habitual constipation as from
any derangement of the functions of
the body, and it is difficult to cure,
for the reason tbat no one likes to
take the medicines usually pre
scribed. iAMJBU.Kl U& were
prepared to obviate this difficulty,
and they will be found pleasant to
the taste of women and children. 25
cents. At all druggists. J. J. Mack
