Stockholm, Sweden, July 23, 1SS7. The weather the fore part of this month being very warm in London, I thought a trip through Norway and Sweden would be pleasantatthisseason of the year.So we started on a trip through these two delightful countries to travel in at this season. "SVe landed from the steamer which conveyed us from Copenhagen, at Gotten burg, in the southern part of Swe den, and there took the railway for Christiana in Norway, where we remained several days visiting the many points of interest in and around the city, which we found most interesting. Everything in and about Christiana is very neat and substantial. The king's pal ace, museum and other public buildings make no pretentions to architectural beauty, but are verv solid structures; the streets are well paved with Belgian blocks made of granite; the beer gardens are neat, with good music, and I am sure are well patronized. Os car's hall, about two miles from the city, and a residence of the king, is a ver neat building with beautiful grounds overlooking Christiana fjord. In it are many articles of curiosity, such as the swords of Bernadotte (Charles XIV.), the coronation dresses of the last two queens of Norway and Sweden, worn by them on corona tion day, etc. Wc took a trip into the interior on the railway, and went as far us Henefoss, a town of about 2,000 inhabitants, in the heart of the lumber district of Norwa. There are a dozen large sawmills in and about Henefoss, and more logs are rafted past Henefoss in one day than come into the Willam ette in a whole year, and piles of lumber that rival any of the large lumber j-ards of Chicago. The mills, however, are of the fashion of those in use forty years ago in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The power is obtained from a wheel known as the "flutter wheel," and there is no gear of any kind. The crank on each end of the shaft drives the "gang," which consists of from four to eight saws. I was informed that each "gang11 would cut 7,000 feet in twelve hours. The "sett" of the saws is very wide, and the saws cut away about J: of on inch in going through the log. The lumber which is cut along the river is rafted to Drammcn, from where ships take it to all parts of Eu rope. The lumber trade, 1 am informed, is now very active, and has advanced four kroners per M within the past six mouths, and the demand is active. The lum ber is very fine, and preferred in the various markets of Europe to an other, although but few of the loss that are sawed are more than eighteen inches in diameter. But what the logs lack 111 size they make up in number, for I have never seen so many logs in my life before as I saw in the rivers and in Christiana fjord in one day. After the trip to Drammen and Henefoss, we took the railway for Stckholm via the valley of the Rhandfos, and following up for many miles the valley of the river Glommen. This is said to be one of the finest valleys in Norway, and is, I should think, about three miles wide between the foothills. The Glommen river is about the size of the "Wil lamette. There are five different falls on the river, each fall of about the height of the falls at Or egon City, and they are several miles apart. There are large iron factories and lumber mills on it. The whole surface of the river was covered with rafts of sawlogs for miles at a time. After leaving tho valley of the Glommen, the road runs over a high rocky coun try with lakes always in sight, and fringed on their banks with birch timber.-. The road reaches about 61 degrees north, and most of our party sat up all night to see the sun's light at midnight "SVe could not see the sun at mid night, but we could see the light, and at midnight it was so light that ordinary printing could be readily read, and at half-past one in the morning it was broad day light. We arrived in Stockholm eighteen hours from Christiana. Stotkuolm is a very beautiful city of about 230,000 inhabitants. Its streets are well paved and are kept in splendid order. There are many elegant buildings and more shipping than in any city I have seen in Europe except London. The king's palaces are not fine buildino-s as compared with some I have seen in other cities. Streets and sidewalks are all laid with "ranite Belgian blocks and each block is inspected before it is laid down and none but perfectjblocks nrf nut down. They are made and inspected in the quarries and then brought on tne streets ana laid under the supervision of an inspector of works; The conse quence IS no poor, irregular worts is done and the streets and side walks are all good, even in the outskirts of the city, and are kept perfectly clean. The wharves, of which there are miles, are. mint or granite, and are the most substan tial I have seen, not excepting the wharves of London. The city is built on islands, and the wharves extend around them. There are no straight5Us like ones along straight streets, but they follow the contour of the shores. The streets near the shore are the same thing. There are many bridges across these channels among the islands, but no shipping goes above the first or lowermost bridge next the Baltic. Steamboats, however, with adjustable smokestacks ply among the islands, and when they pass under the bridges the smoke stacks are lowered. There are no draws in these bridges a3 they are built of heavy granite, . The grounds of Hasselbacken, near the city, are very fine, and embrace a large beer hall, circus, theater, shooting grounds, etc. The are owned by the govern ment, and are a great resort of the "better element" of Stockholm so ciety The picture gallery here is said to be one of the best in Europe, and comprises many paintings of the best Italian, French, German and Spanish painters, as well as a large collection of pictures by Swedish and Norwegian artists. The best picture I have ever seen is in this collection. There are immense iron works here, where it is said the best iron in the world is made. T visited them to-day. Many hun dreds of men are employed in these works. I slso visited the glass factory here which is a' very large establishment, and where a very fine quality of glassware is made. The large porcelain manu factory is some distance from the city and I have not visited it. AVe leave Stockholm for Got tonberg to-day by way of the Got ta canal. This canal extends from this city to Gottenberg, in a south westerly direction, and is navigat ed by steamers of as high as 500 tons burthen. There are seventy five locks and the altitude reached between the ends of the canal is more than 400 feet, and is one of the most extensive works of the kind in the world. All the railway and telegraph lines in Sweden and Norway are owned and operated bv the gov ernment. Many of these roads run through most dfhcult sections of the country to . build in and most have cost immense sums of money although labor and mate rial are very cheap. The jrovern- ment is now engaged n building a railway through the northern part of Sweden and Norway, a large portion of which will be near the arctic circle, but it will open up an immense district of country rich in iron and, lead, and in tim ber. ' - 1 I should like a contract to build it. I am quite sure R. M. Steele, J. 13. David, C.D. Bates and my self could build the road. much cheaper than the goverementcan and make a handsome profit be sides. 2 r j j "We are much indebted to "the United States consul at Christiana, M. St. John, N. J3., Aug. 15. News of the utter failure of the Labrador fisheries, which was re ceived here to-day, confirms the worst fears of the people, the alarming report -being received that 1,000 vessels are coming back clean, and thatr the rerhairiing500 crafts Jiave only a! few quintals ibf fish each. This is the mostdisas trous thing thatteould happen to the fishing colonies here, wnich de pend entirely upon the yield of ocean for their existence. The news has produced an -indescriba ble feeling of gloom aand despair. There has been a wholesale exodus of New Foundlanders this year.
