Land Grant "Wagon Eoads,
The official investigation into
the Oregon land grant wagon
roads began at Salem in this state
on "Wednesday. The commission
ers appointedby secretary Lamar
are: John B. McNamee of Cleve
land, O., and Gabriel C. Wharton
of the general land office. There
was quite a large attendance of
attorneys and officers of the differ
ent wagon road companies. The
investigation will occupy some
time, and there can be hardly any
doubt in the minds of people who
have traveled over these so-called
wagon roads, that some of them, at
any rate, should forfeit their land
grants for not having honestly
earned them. The commissioners
will hold their next session at The
Dalles, traveling over that road,
then over the Albany road, and
next over the Eugene road. It is
to be hoped that they will also
make an examination of the Coos
bay road, which is one of the most
palpable frauds upon the govern
ment that was ever perpetrated.
Portland Journal of Commerce.
An Awful Orime.
In Los Andes, Chili, lived a man
who hated a family that resided
near him. When small pox ap
peared in the province recently he
secretlv obtained a number of
dried pustules, and these he
placed inside a plug of tobacco,
which he threw away in a place
where the people he hated were
likely to see it. One of the chil
dren picked up the tobacco and
gave to her parents, who made
cigarettes from it and smoked
them. A few days afterward
small pox broke out in the house,
and with such virulence that not
one of the family escaped. The
criminal, however, was attacked
with the disease a few days after
ward and died after confessing his
crime.
Wrong Kind of Immigrants.
A recent dispatch from Wash
ington says that the commercial
agent, at New. Caledonia, South
Pacific ocean, has reported to the
department of state that convicts
in the colony are being liberated
with an understanding that they
must not settle in an' English or
French colony, and, as a conse
quence, a majority are going to
San Francisco. He also sa'S that
a proposition is now before the
local parliament to appropriate
1,000 for landing in ban b rancis
co all the worst ot these men, as
they will not be received in Tahiti
or elsewhere. The French gov
ernment, he also sa3'S, are offering
a subsidy of 120 per month for a
steamer to run between Nesume
and Tahiti, and thence to San
Francisco, for the purpose of
assisting these immigrants to
America.

Pioneer Hop Grower.
Southern Oregon grows a most
superior article in the hop line, so
says our pioneer hop grower, J. S.
Denise. He has ten acres of hops
on the Applegate, which were put
in three years ago. Last year
they did remarkaly well, and "this
year Mr. D. estimates that he will
have nearly oO.OOO pounds of as
good hops as ever were grown.
As the best hops are at present
worth 18 cents per pound it can
be seen at a glance that those ten
acres will pay a nice profit. Al
lowing a very liberal figure for ex
penses, we could still count on
$200 profit per acre, which certain
ly fs not a result to be despised.
Mr. Denise grows the variety
known as English cluster, and he
expects they will be ready to gath
er by the 1st of September.
Courier.
A novel sight was witnessed at
Indianapolis recently as the result
of the high temperature of the
past three weeks. Sometime ago
a firm received a consignment of
eggs packed in boxes after the
usual manner. The eggs were,
placed in storage and the other
day the consignee had reason to
open the cases. "When the lid
was removed the low call of chicks
sounded in his ears. One entire
layer of eggs was found to be
hatching out. In a few minutes
after the eggs were brought to the
light, fifteen well developed "or
phans" pieked their way through
the shell. Another layer began
to hatch out about noon, and it
began to look as though the entire
consignment would hatch.
