The great American scourge, to-day, is kidney disease, and it is by no means confined to public men. Thousands of men "wbom we see everv amsmua a xiusb, uay uavo lnnenieu it from their parents and do hot know it. Innumerable women who are delicate are afflicted with it at this moment, and think.lt is simply " weakness." England is having- a great- time over the jubilee, and is too apt to overlook the fact -that there are other kingdoms who have a right to jubilee also. This year the jubilee celebration would have been held in the kingdom of Tav oiara were it not for the unfortu nate fact that the monarch died a few months ago. For fifty years this king had ruled his people wisely and well. "We know little about him, because he neither de clared nor threatened war on any other power. He never caused France any uneasiness, andA ahhoug"h his kingdom was not far from Italy, yet the monarchy" there was not troubled, about its neighbo'r.- 'What an example-was' that for his more celebrated mon archial brethren. King Paul I. was his title, and his kiugdom, like England, is an island. It lies off the northeast coast of Sardinia, and is five "miles long and one broad. Paul has just forty sub jects, and he was on visiting terms with all of them. There are numerous advantages in ruling, a pocket kingdom like Tavolara that are not possessed by the. mon archy of the somewhat more pow erful island of Great Britain If the.ubjecLs talked, socialism or anarchy the king went right down among them and persuaded-thein out of it. As they were an easily persuaded people Paul Isoon got them talked roqnd. If one of the subjects proved stubborn the king .did. not. call .out the arm v. He merely threw off his coat, there and tnerf,an"dthey had it o'ut !" the .spoU As the king as a muscular man, he had little difficulty in convincing thesubjct of the error of his ways. If the subject still refused to list" en to reason "the king w oald. say, "Oh, let's change the subject," and the obstinate man ws there upon Sent to the mainland, and a less opinionated fellow brought back in his place. There tv.u none of that heart-burning about presentation--at --com t which -is, alas! too frequent in the other courts of Europe. If the king happened to be hoeing or weeding out the luxuriant macaroni, the subject would Call him ti the fenc and say, "Hello, Paul, hm. v things?" and the king onll an swer:'"Ob","5rst 'rale,- only" if , don't get some rain soon it will play hob with the peanut ciop." Then Jhe ,subiect would bay, "Your-majesty, hereV a-frif-nd ol mine over from Sardinia. He's in the hand organ business oxer there, and " that's the sort of a sardine he is." The king would then shake hands and borrow a chew of tobacco, or ask the crowd up to ,the palace to have a drink. The king's navy .gave him very little . trouble. -Jt was not much better 'than the United States navy, and so-' the old roan was not very proud of if.aHo rarely nsed it except to take a row in the evenings or to go out fishing in on I theSaturOay half holidays. Last time ne was on me mainland ne boughta"tin dipper to bail it out with, and the financial crisis "brought on "by this "expenditure was the 'only disturbing element in. .a long and. .useful reign, He Was 78 years of age when he died and he was sincerely mourned by his forty faithful subjects. Too much dependence on their ability to catch the festive salmon has brought a number to grief. The Ouster took a load of freight from the head of the bay to North river on Tuesday. The load con sisted of trapping material for par ties from Ilwaco, who intend trap ping for " fall salmon on North river. J. G. Megler, the Brookfield canner, returned from Gray's har bor Saturday, and informed us that he has leased a niece of ground opposite Aberdeeu for five years and will begin at once the building of a small cannery. Fishing on the bay will be in full blast about the loth inst. The cannery at Bay Center will be in full running order by that time. The cannery at North river will not be ready to pack fish nntil the 1st of September, while the one at Long island is about ready to be gin operations.
