ASTOllIA. OREGON:
WEDNESDAY. !IL AUGUST 10. 1S87
It is estimated tliat the cost o new
buildings in the United States for the.
present year will be 700.000,000
The country is still growing.
Tnn Russian government has de
cided to enter upon the work of
building a line of railway across Si
beria, from the borders of European
Eussia to the Pacific Ocean, the prob
able eastern terminus of the line to
be. the port of Vladivostok, on the
Japan sea. It is estimated that it will
require five years to complete this
line, but at the end of that time it
will be possible to travel from St Pe
tersburg to the Pacific ocean in fifteen
days. This will materially reduce the
time now required to make a circuit
of the globe. It is possible now to
improve on the once sensational asser
tion of "round the world in eighty
davs,M in consequence of the greater
rapidity of water transportation. But
by the short cut suggested above,
assuming that regnlar connections
connections could be made, it is not
unlikely that the traveller who was
willing to go on without stopping for
occasional tests could make this cir
cuit in approximately fifty days.
That is, starting from New York, it
would require seven days to go to Lon
don, three davs from London to St
Petersburg, fifteen from there to the
Pacific, nineteen days for crossing
that ocean, and sis days from San
Francisco to his starting point
While at present there is no connect
ing line on the Pacific with Vladivos
tok, the distance from that point to
the trade centers of Japan is relative
ly short, and if a trans-Siberian rail
way is built one may be sure that a
line of swift steamers will bo run
across the Japan sea in connection
with it, and in this way the regular
steamers plying across the Pacific
could be readily reached. Indeed, if
the speed of these Pacific steamers
could bo increased so as to equal that
of the fast steamers that now cross
the Atlantic ocean, the allowance of
nineteen days given for passing from
continent to continent might be ap
preciably reduced. "We are beginning
to realize that our globe is bnt a
small place, and in a generation or
two more there will not probably be
any part of the earth s surface, if we
except the polar regions, that will not
be more accessible to the inhabitant
of Astoria, for example, than Oregon
was to a resident of Boston two gener
ations ago.
Ben Holiday's Will.
Thus far the only will discovered
with tho signature of Ben Holladay
affixed is dated 187.1, while it is pret
ty certain that at least two others
have been made since then, but as
yet, unfortunately, cannot be found.
Tho document in question was made
before the birth of his children by his
second marriage, and after bequeath,
ing $50,000 and the homestead at the
corner of Third and Stark streets to
his wife and tho steamer Pelican to
young Ben (since dead), gives all the
rest aud.residue of his property to his
daughter Jennie, tho countess of
Pourtales, deceased. Should no
will be found doing justice to the
little children by his second wife, it
is feared that Portland will be in
vaded by a lot of starveling French
nabobs, and law suits erflhe that will
wreck an estato for the benefit of
lawyers, that if left alone in able
.and honest hands for five years
could be so managed a3 to pay all
debts and leave a surplus of $500,000.
In view of the none too cordial rela
tions prior to Ben's death between
the brothers Holladay, and as legal
differences are liable to rise between
Joe and tho heirs of Ben, it seems
hardly fair that Joe shonid be an ex
ecutor, in fact his own conscience
and sense of right should tell him to
decline to serve in that capacity.
Thero are two grandchildren, and
two children of Ben Holladay's over
looked by this will of '75, and that
such was not the deceased's intention
is self-evident, and that they ought
to get their sharo is manifest to
everyone. It goes without saying
that unless something maraculous
occurs, and no other will be discov
ered, the one now to be offered for
probate will be contested to the
uttermost Welcome.
Defining a Nestncca Bathing Suit.
"I wish I could wear a Nestncca
bathing suit," said a Main street
young man to his cousin the other
evening, as they sat on the verandah
and perspired. "What dots a Nes
tucca bathing suit consist of,
George?" demurely asked the maiden.
"Oh," he replied, a little cotton to put
in your ears." Then they looked at
the pale moon tin til it was time to
change the subject Polk Co. Item
ize?'. The Promising Amatenr !
He was an amateur yachtman, and
he looked around the store in a timid
-way before he hesitatingly asked:
"Got any tacks?" "Yes, .sir; plenty
of 'em. How many papers?" "I
guess Til take a paper of starboard
and a paper of port. I'm going a
sailing, and I want to be provided

A DESERVED RECOGNITION.
Testimonials For The Cape Life Crew.
Tho saving of human life has in all
ages been Ouly honored and recogni
tion made of tho service done to the
common cause of humanity by those
who risk their lives to savo the lives
of others.
Tho ancient Bonians reserved their
most radiant crown for him who saved
human life, and seated in their ban
quets as tho most honored guest was
ho who had periled his existence in
the saving of another from death.
The records of our later times are
full of testimonials to brave
men who on land and sea snatched
their fellow humans from impending
danger, and on this northwest coast,
in this far-off corner of our country,
numerous are the testimonials of
gratitude and recognition conferred
upon those who by their gallant deeds
have justly deserved them.
The latest instance of this kind to
come under the observation of tlie
writer is tho manner in which the O.
E. F. P. TJ. have expressed their feel
ings toward the members of the
crew of the TJ. S. life saving station
at Fort Canby.
These brave men have been the
means of saving seventeen lives at the
bar this season, and in recognition of
their gallantry the O. K. F. P. U. has
caused to be made and will shortly
present to the crew suitable remem
brances of their bravery.
They consist of seven solid gold
medals, and a marine glass, now on
exhibition in the window of the New
York Novelty store. The medals are
of very handsome design. A gold
life-boat, to which is appended a pair
of crossed oars, surrounded by a
wreath of laurel, surmounts a medal
about tho size of a S10 gold piece, on
which appears on one side: ''Pre
sented by the C. B. F. P. TJ. for brave
and meritorious conduct in rescuiug
lives." On the other side is engraved
on each the name of the man to whom
it is to be presented, "TJ. S L. S. S.
Fort Canby, W. T., 1837."
Tho names of tho men to whom
these medals are to bo presented are
O. D. Stuart, J. H. Erp, A. C. Brown,
J. Q. Church, J. W. Dunlap, F. C.
Harden and W. II. Fry.
For Capt Walker is a pair of $75
marine glasses, suitably engraved, tho
value of the entire eight testimoni
als being over $200, though, donblless,
the recipients will prize them far be
yond their intrinsic value.
They are on exhibition to-day in
the window of the New York Novelty
store, and are worth seeing. The
presentation will shortly be made.
A Lohe. Sad Journey.
Beverends A. Ragaru aud C. Gior
dana left here yesterday morning for
Victoria where they will join Father
Tosi, who recently brought to that
place the sad intelligence of tho mur
der of Archbishop Seghers, on the
Yukon river, far up in Alaska's frozen
wilds.
Upon joining Father Tosi, the three
priests will proceed to the place on
the Yukon whore tho body of tho
archbishop lies. It is about 4,000
miles from here and the journey will
consume about three months. They
irill go first to Sifka and thence strike
across tho trackless wilderness of
Alaska, accompanied by native guides,
until they reach the Yukon river near
its headwaters. There they will con
struct a raft and float down tho river,
going north until they reach tho
frozen part; from there they will
travel the remaining distance on
sledges. The body of the archbishop
will not be brought here until next
winter.
Deceased was a bosom friend of
Father Hylebos of this city, having
gone to Rome together and oeing al
most liko brothers. Another bishop
will probably be appointed soon to
take tho place of Archbishop Seghers.

Bashfulness or modesty are not
prominent characteristics in ihe
make-up of a runner for a boarding
house, and anyone who is in the bus

Usually the vessel has not dropped
her anchor in the stream opposite the
city before there are half a dozen boats
alongside, but this chap who ansv.ers
to the name of Mitchell when softly
Bpoken had the gall to go out on one
of the tug boats, and going aboard
the Zlerom while still in the oiling,
start to get his work in while that
vessel was still outside.
If an Astoria boarding housekeeper
had done this it would be awful: aud
severe denunciations would in due
