The British bark Cumbrian, 1,053, 172 days from London, arrived in last Sunday, and the American ship Merom, 1,158, 163 days from New - York, arrived in yesterday two long passages. Next in order may be the arrival of the Nith, which is now 164 days out from Liverpool. Later: the Ifith is reported outside, and will 'probably be in to-day. A partially esteemed contemporary speaks of a citizen being "attacked by a boil," as though the citizen while peacefully following his nose and pursuing his toes along the path of a virtuous habit of life was set upon by that fomr of malevolence imperfec tly deferential to merit. The boil, prob ably, crouohed upon the limb of a tree, pounced upon and fastened its fangs into the citizen as he sauntered carelessly beneath. During July, '86, salmon was moved from the Columbia as follews: To San Francisco. 8,345 cases; eastward, overland, 98,174; foreign, direct, 44,- 432a total of 150,951 cases. Daring July, '87, the shipments were: To San Francisco, 2,375 cases; eastward, overland, 47,587; foreign, direot, 41, 582, a total of 91,544. A comparison of these totals shows last month's shipments to be 59,407 cases short of the shipments of July, '86. 'About one hundred salmon canner ies have beent are, and will be in operation on this coast this summer and fall. . Of this hundred, thirty eight were in operation on the Colum bia river. Of these thirty-eight, twenty-four were in Astoria, and six others so close by as to make, virtu ally, 80 out of the 38 canneries located kere. As each cannery represents an . average annual disbursement of $50, 000, it will be seen how important a factor is the salmon business in the - commercial prosperity of Astoria. The fifth annual catalogue of the Oregon State Normal school at Mon mouth is received. It shows the school to be in a very prosperous oondition, there being 261 students in attendance during the past year. .The graduating class in the normal : course this year numbered fifteen and there were five graduates in other de- partments. All normal graduates re-i-ceive state diplomas and are author ized to teach in any public school in the state. Other states honor these diplomas by granting teachers1 certifi cates to the holders without examina tion. BRITAIN STEPS IK. J Halifax, Aug. 8. All the British war ships in North American waters are to take a hand in settling the fish ery trouble. The announcement has caused general surprise on all sides. It is the first time that the British authorities have interfered in the fisheries, and the unexpected chnuge of policy occasions no little anxiety here among Americana. The men-of-war will not act as patrols or to keep American fishermen outside the for bidden waters but will make seizures when they cross the lines. There are three war ships available for the ser vice at this moment Admiral Lyons' flag ship 2iellerop7ton, the the Canada and the Pylaues. Theso vessels are now in Halifax. Flrarw From Former Years of Easiness The salmon pack of the Columbia river exhibits many fluctuations in numbers, in value, and in results. The first year that the aggregate pack on the river reached 100,000 cases was in 1869, the following year it was jlou.uuu, ana it advanced, rapid ly by seasons till in 1876 there were 450,000 cases put up on the river. The next year 1877 was a good deal like 1887 has been: cold, wet, stormy weather ex tended into June, few fish through out the season, and a very scant July run. In 1878 the number of case3 packed was 460,000; in 79, 480,000; in '80, 530,000 cases; in '8L 550,000; in '82, 541,300; in '83, 629,400; in 1884, 620,000; in '85, 553,800: from March 31, 1886, to April 1, 1887, 562,693 cases salmon were shipped from the Colum bia river: the pack, proper, for '86 may be set down at 448,500 cases. TOTAIi COAST PACK FOR TEN YEARS. The total salmon pack for the en tire coast for the past ten years has been as follews: 1877, cases,. .504,800 1882, cases, 994,800 1878 633,000 1883 1,106,400 1879, 539,600 1884, 935,300 1830, 679,5001885, 835,700 1881, 911,100 1886, 333,354 The total salmon pack of the coast for 1887 cannot be approx imated. in estimate at this date, the unknown factors in the proa lem being the outside paok and the run in Alaska. It will, prob ably, be in the neighborhood of three quarters of a million cases. THE BANKER TEAR. The son roes of the paok of the ban ner year of 1883 were as follews: Columbia river, cases 629,400 Sacramento river 160,000 Rogue river 16,000 Coquille river. , t . . ... 7,000 Eel river 15,000 Frazer river . 175,000 Other BntishColumbia rivers 63,000 Alaska 30,000 Total cases 1,106.400 Should the estimate of 750,000 cases for '87 be deemed too large, .the fact is cited that this jear every inlet, bay, estuary and - river mouth from FortOrford to Behring Sea, 'has a cannery located, soon to be and in active operation. TJp to 1876 nearly all the Columbia river salmon was sent to San Francis co for distribution. Later the ten dency was to send a considerable per centage of it to England. Of late the English shipments have greatly fal len on. in lBSo, 4Ui,ou cases went from the Columbia river, bound to England: in 1886 the bnlk of the pack for the first time went eastward, but 274,627 cases going to Great Britain: this year there will not be over 150,000 cases cross the bar for Liverpool or London, and every case packed this year on the river could lj. ?s-J. find an American market There is, probably, not over 3,000 cases of this year's pack unsold on the river. Tho resultant profit of tho season's work rests largely with those who bought in quantity in tho earlj' months of tho year. Neither the can neries nor tho fishermen have made anything on the season s work. COST OF A CASE IN 1877. The first estimate of the co3t of and profit on a case of salmon was made in 1877. That year it was fig ured on a3 follews: Cans, 48, 3oentseach SI 44 Fish, 34U Labels Casot .. Lead and tin 140 10 18 12 80 Labor and fuel Interest, taxes, etc 1& Total SI 20 There is considerable difference in the cost of the several items enumer ated above, between '77 and '87; some, as case, labor, fuel, etc., have gone down; the most prominent difference is in the cost of the raw material, which has gone up, in every Bense of the phrase. Of the future outlook of the busi ness, the limits of this article pre clude but little discussion. It is, however," to be said, that there is no strip of land or water in the northwest of equal value with that which lies in front of our doors, where, without any preparatory sow ing or cultivation, is annually gar nered a harvest that is of an annual value of two and a half million dol lars, and the most ordinary sugges tions of prudence suggest the protec tion and perpetuation of what now appears to be a dwindling source of revenue to Oregon and Washington.
