Ld wards of Philadel phia, relates the following wonderful experiences: "During my term as resident physi cian in the medical wards of the Philadelphia Hospital, it was a com mon occurrence for an ambulance call to be received from one of the down town station houses. Upon reaching Hie place designated, we would he shown a man or woman who has been found uncon scious on the street and supposed to he i n t oxicated. He would be removed to the hospital, where he would linger unconscious for twentj'-four or AX AMBULANCE CALL. twenty-six hours, and then die. In a majority of these cases a post-mortem examination would reveal a most horrible state of affairs whichl will explain hereafter." "A ladv in apparently cood health, who rarelv complained, and then only occasionally, of some slight and tran sient ill-feeling, as nearly every one does at some time or other, took a long walk with her husband, and upon returning home, feeling pailicu larly well, went to her room to remove her bonnet, and, while standing in front of the mirror, fell to the floor in a convulsion, followed by twenty-four hours of unconsciousness and death without a return to consciousness. A post-mortem examination revealed the true cause in a most horrible form." "A young married man for years suffered from dyspepsia, for which he consulted many physicians. After suffering in this way, and having no other symptoms of disease, he awoke one morning to find a very slight swelling, scarcely more than a pufii ness under one eye. In less than a month he was dead. Jsow the real and terrible cause of all tlscse deaths was Bright's diseaso of the kidneys, and they might all have been avoided had the unfortun ate victims known what a horrible malady was fastened upon them. But Bright's disease has no symptoms of its own. It steals into the system like a thief, and deceives its victim by showing the symptoms of nearly every every other disease. But what can be done ? M Take it in time. If you feel unaccountably tired; if you have peculiar pressing pains; if your appetite is uncertain; if your head aches occasionally ; if your sleep is irregular; if the fluids passed are profuse or scanty, do not delay, but use the best known means for escaping agony and death be fore "it is too late. For this purpose there is a remedy, and the only one that has ever proven absolutely certain. Hunt's Remedy has never been equaled, and it is the only ab- like a toief. solute one known to the medical pro fession. There are thousands of men and women to-day who enjoy perfect health who would be in their graves bad it not been for this wonderful remedy, and there are thousands of others who require it without an hour's delay. This is no idle state ment, but truth drawn from cases which are Deyond question. A peculiar case came up before J the San Francisco ponce court last Saturday. Persons who have ever become interested in the history of Jean Valjean, as told in Victor Hugo's Les Miscrables, will note a slight comparison between that and the history of a business man as told below. Last Tuesday a well-dressed man registered at the Palace as J. M. House, of Chicago. He appeared to have considerable money, and to attaches of the hotel stated he was on his way to Aus tralia, he being a member of an American und Australian manu facturing company of Chicago. He paid his bills promptly, and early Friday morning bought a ticket for Australia. He then paid his hotel bill and was con veyed to the wharf, where the steamer Jfarijwsa was found ready to depart on her ocean voy age. He placed his baggage on board, and returning to the wharf a short time after was surprised to see a detective who, exhibiting a warrant, arrested him on an em bezz'ement charge, preferred by one Samuel Nathan, and conveyed him to the city prison. House was, of course, indignant, but when he saw the man at whose instance he was arrested, he bore his arrest with a quietly injured expression aud actions that caused the officers to pity and sympathize for him, while at the same time they could not disabuse their minds of a suspicion that he was in some manner guilty of the of fense charged. Arriving at the courtroom, Na than, through his attorneys, en deavored in every possible way to have the case postponed, but the udgewho took occasion to remark that the case looked to him like an attempt- at-blackmail, ordered the examination to begin at once. Nathan began by saying that about August 1, 1880, he roomed on Pine street, and was then, as he is now, a dealer in jewelry. At the time stated he had purchased a gold watch and chain from one Jonas, who is now dead. "This watch," continued he, "was taken from my store by defendant, House, who was a thief, tin-. known as Julius Mailhouse. He offered to sell it for me, and s.ul he could get $loU tor it. l gave it to him, and he said he would re turn in an hour. Instead of doing so he went to Chicago, and I never saw him again until Thursday, when I met him on Kearney street. I then told htm to give up my property or settle in some way. He refused, and then 1 had him arrested." Detectives and policemen were then examined as to the character of Nathan. The testimony was all in one line, and that to the ef fect that Nathan was known to every officer in the city as a go between for thieves; that his rec ord was very low. House was then called to the stand. He advanced quickly, threw himself back in a chair, and said in substance: "There is no use for me to deny it. I was once a thief, and operated with that man Nathan and another named Hugh Geary. This watch referred to was stold by Geary at the Ala meda baths, about August 1st, 18S0. All three of us went over solely for the purpose of depredat ing on the honest portion of the community. Geary picked the watch and of course one-third of its value belonged to me. Nathan took-possession of the watch, but I got it afterwards, and los-t it on poker in a gambling room. Then I left for Chicago, where I have lived ever since, and from that dav to this I have been an honest man. I have risen step by step, and to-day occupy a position of trust and profit. This arrest was simplyjto extort money from me. It is an attempt at blackmail." And with this the prisoner set tled back to await cross-examination, which he knew would be titter. "Were you ever in prison ?'' asked the prosecuting attorney. - "I was; but where I decline to tell." "Did you not serve a term at the house of correction?" Witness was silent. "Didn't you serve a term at the Joliet prison?" "I decline to answer." ,j. mm. tJ -Si -JCJ. "Why soT' "Because that doesn't affect the case. Let the past alone, is mT motto. Be a, man henceforth if you can." Mary Alsop; once wealthy, wife of an old umbrella mender, was called and identified Mailhouhe as the man House who had received the watch fromNathan seven years ago ' The court at this junctuieook the case under advisement until Friday morning. A Touching Obituary. "Bill Skinner is dead," said a man coming into the office of a Dakota newspaper. "Moses and thunder!" yells the editor, beginning to jump around the desk. "That old thief hasn't died, has he? I begun to think the old fossil would live forever! He owed me four years' back sub scription, but I am willing to lose it just for the satisfaction of know ing that the howling old hypocrite has gone where he will get what he deserves. JBesides, if I went out and said a word about him the old woman and the boys would chase me off the place with a pitchfork. Got to give him an obituary, though, 1 suppose." Then he sat down and wrete: "It is with a heavy heart and Jagging pen that we make the an nouncement that William Horatio Skinner is no more. For many years he has been a leading citizen of this place; a man honored, re spected, large-hearted, able; a man who touched nothing that he did not adorn. This usually happy community is .plunged into the deepest gloom by the sad event. Bat what is our loss is heaven's gain. Rest in peace! He was a kind husband and an indulgent fa ther." Dakota Bell.
