He said no, he didn't want any thing. She wentaway, and he sat there half an hour longer, when the proprietor went to him and asked if he wanted to be shown anything. "No, sir," said the nervous man; t:I just wanted to sit around. My physician has rec ommended perfect quiet for me, and above all things I must avoid being in crowds. Noticing that you did not advertise m the news papers, I thought this would be as quiet a place as T could find so I dropped in for a few hours of isolation." The merchant picked up a bolt of paper fabric to brain him, but the man went out. He said all he wanted was a quiet life. i. '. 1- rrm 1 1 ine American peupic. iuu icjjijt is so thoroughly in keeping with common sense that we print it. The Post says: "A correspondent of the Post yesterday pleaded lor the substitution of the word 'tim ber1 for 'lumber,' in its American sense, insisting that lumber meant old junk and rubbish. We cannot agree with him. Of course his advice is in accordance with En glish usage, but that fact has no more to do with the question whether we should so employ the word than have the flowers of ver nal unfoldment. England is no longer the arbiter of the language that beara its name, at least for America; and whether hor writers like a word or not has nothing to do with the question whether we shall employ it. The word 'tim ber' is used in America to mean felled or un felled trees, and the larger beams of a house or a ship. For this England has no equiva lent whatever, and ought to have one. By 'lumber' we mean tim ber after it has been sawed into boards, joists, etc., and for this material England has no special word whatever, unless 'deal' cov ers it. Our language needs more synonyms, not fewer, and this coun try is doing far more than all the rest of the world towards its en richment. England may mistake a lumber merchant for a 'junk dealer,' if she pleases; we shall continue to use the words 'lumber' and 'timber' in their present sig nification to stand for important things which sorely need names. We are no longer an English col ony, 'you know.'" A telegraph operator in Ohio was supposed to be dead. He was duly coffined for burial, and when the pall bearers took him in charge he regained conscious ness. Rightly concluding that the pallbearers were telegraph op erators, he wasted no breath in an outcry, but, using his knuckles as a ticker, telegraphed on the coffin lid the message, "Let me out." They let him out, and he is hack at his work. rAY TUTTIiE, 31. D. PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON Office Rooms G Pythian Building Rkbidence On Cedar Street, back of St. Mary's Hospital. P"Vtt. O. B. ESTES. Munville, of Lowville, New York, is a gen eral agent for something that beats the devil, so to speak. It is the asbestos burial casket. Asbes tos is a mineral that is not con sumed by fire. The more you burn, the more it don't consume. The hotter it is more it blushes at the ignorance of the man who is trying to dematerialize it. This rstuff is to be made into coffins ami caskets into which the remains ot horse jockeys, singing-school teachers, mugwumps, swindlers who sell patents to farmers, ex postmasters, disconnected preach ers, pla'ed out deacons, book agents and those who do not subscribe and pay for their local papers and those who vote against the public schools are to be packed away. The idea of a retreat for the body that will not burn is something that beats hell. President Broadwater of the Montana central branch of the Manitoba svstem. wuo is now pushing to the Pacific coast with 7,000 men, laid Monday, July 18th, seven miles and 1,000 feet of track, beating the record for rapid railway construction. A few days ago two ladies, one of whom carried a baby, entered a Boston carpet store and signified their desire to look at some car pets. It was a very warm day, but the salesman cheerfully showed roll after roll, until the perspira tion literally streamed from every pore of his body. Finally, one of the ladies asked the other is she did not think it was time to go. "Not quite," was the answer of her companion, and then, in an under tone, she added: "Baby likes to see him roll them out, and it is not time to take the train yet."
