Ct hc ga storan. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY- JOLY SO-18S7 AN ,lJfRKM" KING. That -wickedness sometimes pros pers is evinced by the rather roman tic career within the last few months of Charles AY. Banks, formerly of Al bany, N. Y., later of San Francisco, and now elevated by the power of love to the throne of king of Cook's ;cioTtfl in fhA Smith Pacific ocean. A history of Mr. Bank's life in Albany would add so littleinteres1; to his later life that 'it is unnecessary to refer to it now, except to state that in that town he married a very interesting young lady, for whom, according to his latest letters to friends, he still en tertains the most touching affection. It is also hardly necessary to say that the lady in question places so little faith in these assurances of unbound ed love that she has begun a divorce suit, and charges his kingship with desertion and infidelity. Soon after the marriage of the ' couple they journeyed to San Fran cisco, where Mr. Banks, being intelli gent and bright, as well as a hand some young man, obtained employ ment in the office of "Wells. Fargo & Co. There he prospered prospered toowell for his personal good, for, having obtained a position of trust and gained the entire confidence of his employers, he suddenly disap peared six months ago, carrying with him over $50,000 belonging.to the company. His many friends at the Golden Gate mourned his departure, for he was a good talker, and a good story-teller, while his little suppers at home and at his club were the talk of society for days after each event Mrs. Banks, too, mourned his loss, but Ihe reasons were widely different, and "she went to New York after gathering enough evidence in San Francisco to prove that her husband had not been all that she expected. Consulting a law firm there the papers of a divorce were properly drawn up, but pending information as to the whereabouts of her 'recreant husband she withheld proceedings. Meanwhile Wells, Fargo & Co. had sent detectives after the defaulter, who tracked him to Tahiti, Sandwich Islands, but the wily young man fled in a schooner a few hours before the sleuth-hounds of the law reached " there. From this point the gay de faulter's movements much resembled those of Billy Kid, the illustrious hero whom Bosina Vokes sings about in her clever song, "His 'Art Was True toPolL" Like Billy Kid, Ulr. Banks , .Landed on a strange shoro and looked out ivEbrfaninri, - When a noble savage lady, of a oolor rather shady, Came along and accosted him. "Oh, stay with me, and the king you'll be, And in a palace loll, Or I'll eat you like a fillet;" so he gave his hand, did Billy, But his 'art was true to Poll. . Mr: Banks was certainly in luck. He had sailed away from Tahiti for a point anywhere out of the grasp of the' law, and favoring gales had direct ecThis craft to the shores of Kareton ga, Cook's Island, in the South Pa cific, where the beautiful but dusky queen Ulakea (Ulakea in English but something else in her own" picturesque " language) reigned quietly and.kindly over her Ibving tribe. She is a wid--owybut ceased abruptly to grieve for her departed lord when the handsome face and manly bearing and figure of Mr. Banks loomed up before her in her quiet, luxurious home. He was a wanderer, weary and forlorn, and she a widow, sad and lonely, .but with lots of this world's goods and a large heart, which she unhesitatingly threw at his feet Her kindness won him, coupled with his own Yankee in genuity, which told him that he had .struck it rich, and ho availed himself of the fortunate opportunity equally as unhesitatingly as it .had been opened to him. There at Baretonga, safe from the law's strong gf asp where the climate is glorious and warm all the year round, Banks-is now living, duly do mesticated and acknowledged as king, and receiving the homage of the peo ple, who adore him, because their be loved queen has set them the exam ple. The detectives who found him there say he expresses no desire to re turn to his native country, but seems satisfied to continue his life of idle ness, and power. The United States treasury to-day is a" vast bank in metallic money and money-metals. Probably it his the greatest hoard of the precious metals, coined and uncoined, anywhere on the face of the earth and this is not all gathered in one place. On the 1st of July the treasury of the United States had.S278,000,000 in gold, $85, 000,000 being in bars, and $215,000,000 of silver, of which less than $4,000, 000 was uncoined. Th& amount of treasury notes oh hand was less than $30;000,000. The secretary of the treasury has been able by carrying .gold. -bars to keep down the amount of cash taken from the mon etary circulation to the lowest limit It is amazing when we think of the monetary condition of this country forty years ago, when the sup ply of both metals was very small; thirty years ago. when money as good as gold was unknown between Penn sylvania and California; and twenty years ago, when this side of the Eocky mountains not a silver piece was visible, and gold was tho cen ter of a vast daily speculation, in which tho treasury notes passed cur rent at 50 cents on the dollar more or less. It is amazing in view of the past that to-day our national treasury is a vast bullion bank. The sending to Cabool of the heads of two hundred Andars and Ta- rakis slain by the troops of the ameer is a striking evidence of the savagery of the customs of war that still exist in Afghanistan. It appears that after the first fight, in which they were vic torious, the government troops were defeated by the Jaghuri and Haza- rahs and that the ameer is now send ing re-enforcements to his army. The consequence of this petty warfare to the civilized world depends alto gether on how jnuch English and Russian intrigues have to do -with the revolt There is a great deal of force in the statement made in Dunn's Com mercial Review that a halt year dur ing which we have invested $100,000, 000 in new railroads, $400,000,000 in buildings and another $100,000,000 more in mines and manufactories, cannot bo expected to be a very lively time for speculation. Tho money that goes into solid business is not at hand to put in margins or to engineer comers. At Row' Opera Honse To-nlglit, (San Francisco Chronicle.) With a flourish of trumpets the mammoth spectacular, "Tho Devil's Auction," arrived from the east Sat urday, and immediately took posses sion of the Bush street theater, whore people were turned away, unable to gain standing room after 7:45 p. u., last evening. "The Devil's Auction" is the largest show of its kind ever brought to the coast, and the pluck of its proprietor, Mr. Gilmore, should be rewarded with the same business as tested the theater last evening on its initial production. Tho piece is a conglomeration of all tho good things imaginable, and can be thor oughly enjoyed and appreciated by people of every temperament Such scenery, costumes, ballets, premiers, specialties and other things have never been produoed on such an elaborate scale of grandeur as that given by this company. That it will become popular there is no doubt. The company i3 a perfect army of men and women nearly 75 people forming the roster.
