THE MOBMOffS' PRESIDENT. Salt Lake, July 27. The cause of the secrecy surrounding the sickness and death" of John Taylor, head of the Mormon church, can be explained only on the theory that high chnrch officials did not want to let the fact become generally known, for fear that the U. S. marshal would get trace of many "under-ground- ers" who wanted to be at the bed side of the dead man without dan ger of arrest. Taylor Has been in hiding since February 1,1885, having preached that day for the last time in the tabernacle, and fleeing from jus tice that night. He has never since appeared in public. In March, 1885, Taylor was indicted by the grand iury of the third dis trict court for unlawful cohabita tion with four wives, and although frequent raids have been made upon places where he is sup posed to "have been, the attempts at arrest have always been futile. Where he has been none but a chosen few of the Mormon officials know. He has undoubtedly been in the vicinity of this city, but the place is still a mystery. Even the Deseret iTei, in its obituary notice, does not tell where be died. It does not even tell of what dis ease he died. It says on this sub ject: "It is now some months since president Taylor was attacked by disease. It came upon him by de grees, manifesting itself in the b.e ginning by a swelling of the limbs for want of proper exercise. He fought the disease with his char acteristic pluck and determina tion." No one connected with the church will tell the place of his death, for fear of disclosing to United States officials the rendez vous of violators of the law. His funeral takes place in the taberna cle Friday, July 29, at noon. The body will lie in state in that build ing from 7 a. m. till 11:30 a. m., when the public will be permitted to view the remains. As to his sucoessor, Joseph F. Smith stands the best chance. George Q. Cannon will make a strong bid for the place, but he is opposed by most of the Mormon church. "Wilford Woodruff, prs ident of the twelve apostles, is tn titled to the place under the order of succession. The successorship question will probably not come up for a 3'ear or two. There was an interregnum of three years be tween Brighara Young's and Tay lor's reigns. Seeds That Germinate Quickly. The human system Is a fruitful soil, and among seeds that germinate most rapidly in it are those of rheumatism and neuralgia. A slight cold, brought on by sitting in a draught, wet feet or damp clothes, will de velop either of those abominable painful maladies with unpleasant rapidity. The proper pretentlve of this agonizing vege tation in Hostctter'd Stomach Bitters, a medicine which nullifies a tendency to either of the maladies named, and hoothes the aches which they causo. Nor is it less effective as a remedy for rheummhm than as Its preventive, a fact as amply attested as any other relating to its curative proper ties. Mariners, miners, frontiersmen, and others, have ever found it a faithful pres ervative of health in unfavorible regions, and a benign remedy for malarial disorders, and stomach, liver and bowel complaints. It is a fine promoter of appetlto and a capi tal tonic. The various British and Scot tish associations in Massachusetts have undertaken a movement to securo the naturalization of their members, and all British subjects who may be eligible to American citizenship. Careful estimates give at least 27,000 unnaturalized Brit ish-born men in the state, a large proportion of whom are located in large cities in the eastern section. A Surprise Tor The Pension Office. Washington, July 27. The pension office had a surprise yes- terdav. This was in a brief re fusal "of a Kansas man who has for years been in receipt of a com fortable pension to be continued on the rolls any longer. The let ter declining the pension is as fol fel fol eows: To Gen. J. C. Black, Commis sioner of Pensiens: Drop me off the pension list, for I am cured by faith in the .Lord. There never was much the matter witli me, so the blessed Lord hadn't much to do. Blessed bo his holy name. Yours truly, Harvey Cunningham. An aged colored woman in a Georgia town recently signified her intention of joining the church, She was reputed well-to-do, and two rival churches strove to win her. One of them sent a deacon of great eloquence to employ up on her his rare arts of persuasion. In normal circumstances, it is probable that his mission might have been successful, but the aged woman recognized him as a per son who had owed her five dollars for fourteen years, and she joined the other church. The queen's jubilpe cake meas ured eleven feet high and three and a half feet in circumference, weighed half a ton, and cost the donors and manufacturers S00 to make.
