CO t gailjj goriim. ASTORIA. OREGON: THURSDAY. .JULY 28, 1SS7 In the city of New York it is esti mated that not less than S250,000 a day is spent for beverages; 1,500,000 in one week; $75,000,000 in a year. Outside of the office of the New York Sun, it seems to bo pretty gen erally agreed, on the part of the Dem ocratic newspapers and politicians, that Grover Cleveland is to be the Democratic candidate for the presi dency in 1888- It is noticed that ex-Governor St John is making third party speeches in Ohio, a Republican state, where prohibition is not an issue, but keeps clear of Texas, where the pending movement may hurt the Democratic party. The paper in the United States hav ing the shortest name is the Au, a German weekly published in Milwau kee. That city also possesses the paper with the longest title. It is called Die Deutsche Amerikanische Gewerbe und Industrie Zeitung: Fortschritt derZeit. The annual expenditures by Europe upon military and naval purposes, ac cording to a repent English publica tion, amount to nearly $33,675,000, 000, while the total of the national debts of Europe reaches the astound ing amount of -$24,313,037,650.. On this latter sum nearly $1,000,000,000 is paid for interest The Henry George labor party does not mean to lose anything by failing to claim enough. In New York city its leaders assert that they have 75,000 voters enrolled on their books. They even boast that at the next election in November they will carry the most of the assembly districts of New York, and elect a majority of the board of aldermen. The United States and Great Brit ain last year produced nearly the same amount of pig iron, the produc tion here being 5,680,000 tons and in Great Britain 6,800,000 tons. Great Britain exported one-half it made, only manufacturing 3,500,000 tons of the crude pig into more valuable forms of iron, while the United States not only manufactured all its own output, but nearly 600,000 tons in ad dition. TmNew York Tribune sometimes has a way of firing off its statements before getting well loaded with its charge. It says the use of silver is not increasing anywhere except in the United States, while the fact is that the use of silver has increased in a year about $35,000,000, and that the use is so large that the coinage of 1886 exceeded the product of the world's mines by about 21,000,000 worth. "What sense is there in saying that its use is not increasing in India, when her coinage last year was nearly double that of 1885, though her silver imports were nearly a full average? The Tribune also says that the move-, ment of gold to India and the east has for several years been great and in large commercial transactions that coin is gradually coming into use in place of silver. These assertions have no other appropriate answer than flat denial at every point, as the gold im port of India is trivial, there is no gold coin in circulation, and the trans formation referred to is purely im aginary. The United States is valued at 276,000,000 more than Great Britain, the richest of all the nations of the old world, notwithstanding the for mer is only a little over 100 years old. In 1880 her wealth was estimated at 43,642,000,000, more than sufficient to-buy the empires of Kussia and Tur key, the kingdoms of Sweden, Nor way, Denmark and Italy, together with Australia, South Africa and all of South America, including lands, mines, cities, factories, palaces, ships, flocks, herds, jewels, moneys, sceptres, diamonds and the homes of 177,000, 000 people. In size, also, our republic takes first rank. Eighteen states as large as Spain, 31 states .as large as Italy, or CO states as .large as England and Wales, would be necessary to form a territory as large as that of the United States. If we should take five of the six first-class powers of Europe Great Britain and Ireland, Ger many, France, Austria and Italy and add to them Spain, Portugal, Switzer land, Denmark and Greece, and com bine all into one mighty empire, the piece of territory thus formed could be laid down time after time in the United States east of the Bocky "Mountains. At all drug gists. J. J, Meek & Co., proprietors, B.F, .. THE PRICE OF HAY. The ruling price of hay here at present is higher than is usual in Or egon at this time of year. The unus ually high water has shut off the supply from bottom lands along the uoiumoia, irom wuicu a mre cu tity is usually received, and though there is considerable loose hay being hauled into town from the surround ine country, the amount of baled hay being received is not sufficient to bring the price down. There is plenty of hay in the country, how ever. Several carloads of wheat hay have been received from Ikledford, and if favorable rates can be obtained a large quantity will be shipped in irom tnac secnon. xnere is also plenty of good hay up in Union coun ty. A man from there waa yesterday trying to make a contract to send 800 tons here. r Only a few days ago deal ers were paying a cent a pound for baled timothy, but it has come down a little, and they are now selling it for from $18 to $20. "Wheat hay sells for from $16 to $18 per ton. This is very good for the farmers, but it is rough on teamsters, and they will be glad to see the price come down. Oregonian. 27. Suicide. DR. That night, when the clothing of the little fellow had been removed and he was engaged in his usual sup plication to the Throne, he said: "And U Xiord, bless papa, mamma, and me, for you know, Lord, I'm a gone sucker." Renews Her Youth. Mrs. Phoebe Chesley, Peterson, Clay Co., Iowa, tells the following story, the truth of which is vouched for by the residents of the tewn: "1 am 73 years old, have been troubled with kidney complaint and lameness for many years: could not dress myself without help. Now 1 am free from all pain and soreness, and am able to do all my own housework. 1 owe my thanks to Electric Bitters for having renewed my youth, and removed completclj' all dis ease and pain."
