A novel business is that which
some men have gone into up in
Crawford county, Pennsylvania
the raising of pole cats. They
have started two ranches for the
purpose, one at Little's Corner's
and another at Miller's Corners.
The object is to secure the fur of
the cats. It is not generally
known that this fur forms the
trimming of costly cloaks for
women. It is obtained now from
the animals caught in their wild
state, but a finer quality can be
obtainod by shutting the animals
up and improving them by care.
They are extremely prolific, and
as the nelts are worth a dollar
apiece as they come from the ani
mals, it is believed that the busi
ness can be made to pay well.
A physician says: "Within the
last five years, in a district em

ninety-three demises in my own
immediate practice, and every soul
of them has gone out with the
ydesave four who died suddenly
by fatal accident."

A Great Inrention.
Cincinnati, July 25. At Fern
bank, seven miles irom this city,
are the workshop and laboratory,
of Harvey B. Cox, a young elec
trician who, though known to but
few here, is attracting the atten
tion of scientists and electricians
in this country and Europe by
his inventions, in which he is as
prolific and ingenious as Edison.
His latest device is a trumpet, to
be used for telephoning at sea, on
which he has been working for
some months. The invention is
the outgrowth of his discovery of
the great distance an echo or re
verberation will carry, and the dis
covery that speaking trumpets, if
made" to give the same fundament
al 'note, could vibrate and produce
the same phenomena known in
acoustics as sympathy. "With this
trumpet a conversation in an ordi
nary tone of voice was carried on
between persons four and one
fourth miles apart. People sitting
in their windows, or on their
porches, a mile awa', could be
distinctly heard, and in a couple
of instances they were told the
nature of their conversation, anil
admitted that suoh had taken place.
By listening to the whistlo of a
train, and tracing it beyond Fern
bank to Lawrenceburg, Ind.", it
was found that the instrument has
a well defined range of twenty-six
miles. That is, a loud sound like
a locomotive whistle, or the rumb
ling of a train, can be distinctly
heard at a distance of fifteen miles
in every direction.
Conversation was readily carried
on between two gentlemen on high
hills on opposite sides of the Ohio
river, about four and one-half
miles apart. Tests made on the
water showed that the trumpet
was even more available than on
land. The instrument will lie
patented as soon as it is perfected.
