LOST PUBLIC MEN- What tho Death of so Many Great 3feu Means Are Wo as a Katioa In Danger? ( "America is losing its prominent men very fast," was the remark of a well known Englishman who is now visiting this country, and he was right. Sumner, "Wilson, Phillips. Washburn, Carpenter, and a host of others have departed, and John A. Logan has just passed away. But has it never occurred to the reader that tho cause of the deaths of these public men was in every case tho same? And has it occurred to you that Alarming, But ler, Blaine, and a host of others are treading the same road? The great American ecourge, to-day, is kidney disease, audit is by no means confined to public men. i.'w whom we Bee everv America's loss, day have inherited it from their parents and do not know it. Innumerable women who are delicate are afflicted with it at this moment, and think it is simply " weakness." Little children whose kidneys have been injured by scarlet fever are suffering from it, usually unknown to their parents. Its symp toms aro a tired feeling and a desire to sleep; a pale complexion; uncer tain appetite ; faintness at the pit of the stomach; shifting pains, some times in the. back, sometimes in the limbs, and again in the head; plentiful or scanty urine, with the scum on top or a sediment and brickdust in the bottom; a burning sensation in passing and skin hot at times and clammy at others. Any one of these things indicate disor dered kidneys, which are tho first stage of Bright's disease. They muBt be checked. Captain Greenwood, of the steamer Kanawha, had these troubles in an aggravated form; he used Hunt's Remedy and is in perfect health to dav. Rev. Charles Pike.of Waterbury, Conn., was greatly reduced in the same manner and was "suffering se verely." Ho used Hunt's remedy and was cured. Mrs. Alexander L. Nichols, of Phe- mx. K. J., alter t passing tlirough allcAPT. giieekwood. the suffering which any woman is ever called upon to endure, was cured by Hunt's Remedy. The son of Cornelius B. Smith of the State Department at Albany, N. Y., was given up to die by no less than four physicians, but was cured by Hunt's Remedy. These instances could be prolonged indefinitely. Two things are certain: FirstKid ney troubles, which always end in Bright's disease, unless checked, are fearfully prevalent. Second They can be cured by using the remedy above named. With these truths in view, why men and women will be so heedless. and allow symptoms to run along until they end in agony or death we cannot understand. "We certainly advise all to think carefully an this subject, and act without delay. Last week we called special &t-; tention to the fact that the third session of the Columbia "Waterway convention would open at Astoria on August 3rd. The vital impor tance and value of the movement to every one.in the opening up of out river to inland navigation is sufficient reason for referring to the subject again. The attend ance at the convention held at Vancouver last year, and the ac tive interest in the proceedings taken by those who were there, warrant the expectation that a very large meeting will convene at As toria this time. But as yet we have not heard of the appointment of delegates from the numerous other riverside cities. In doing this, no time should be lost if they desire to aid in promoting their own welfare. The voice of each city, town and hamlet on the river and near the river, from Astoria to Idaho, should be represented at Astoria by two or more delegates. The importance of a large meeting, and a clear and forcible expression of the need and value to the differ ent sections of the work to be done, cannot bo overestimated; and it is earnestly hoped that the numerous and enterprising cities of the In land Empire will one and all seize this opportunity of conferring to gether as to how the work thoy need so much can best be pushed to completion. As fast as dele gates are appointed, their names should be sent in to the seretary of the Waterway convention, whose address is at Vancouver, "W. T. It addition to this, those who are ap pointed late in the day will meet with an equally hearty reception on presenting themselves at Asto- rria on August dru. jromana Journal of Commerce 23. Piguring on Profit and Loss. "Pillem," said a Dakota real es tate agent, in a town which is en joying a boom, to his partner. "I closed with that man from Phila delphia." "Is that so?" "Yes; he takes five lots and pays ten thousand. Let's Ggure up and see how much we came out on them." "Well, they cost us 1,000." "Yes, and it cost you about S2ilf to treat and entertain that man from Chicago whom we tried to sell to." "And I let the St. Paul man beat me out of 300 at poker in the hopes of selling to him." "Then I cashed a bogus draft for tliat man from New York, and then he skipped out without buy insr." r "Then that Iowa man took up two days of our time at $50 a day." "Yes, and said he wanted to think about it before buying. And then the Sr. Louis man I took home to dinner with me, he stole silverware to the value of S15, and skipped like the rest." "And I paid a $10 drunk and disorderly fine for the Milwaukee man." "We mustn't forget to Gguro in about $50 for livery bills." "No, nor spending $25 for half a day at church with that Boston man." "And put down $100 for adver tising and $50 that I bad to pay Jones for keeping still when he accidentally overheard me tell this man we sold that marsh to just beyond the lotR was an artificial lake put in by the city at a cost of 830,000." "Let's see total $2,050 profit $7,950. That won't hardly do. We've got to make more than that." "Yes, wo must cut down ex penses on the next deal some where. I guess we better net spend time going to church with any more men." 'Dakota Bell. ALWAYS KEEP THE UP FES HAND OF DISEASE. Chanjjts of temperature are apt to caue dangerota sickness; in the fan-blooded apoplexy is to be feared, when you hava a pain in the head, feel dizzy, feverish, rheumatic or sick at the stomach, take at once thret to ten of Bkantjketh's Pills. Such slight affections are only the harbingers of disease or sudden pros tration, and the thing to do Is to master the trouble; stance. Never let a little sickness get the better of you. Drive it out of doors im mediately. Let there be no com promise, always have with you a box of BKAKDKKTH'rPnxs and you are prepared: to- ghfc- i&r. worsf fQa of attawtf & Hi iagipfency. Alfred Krupp's Puneral. The funeral of Alfred Krupp, the oreat cannon maker, last Wednesday was an imposing spec tacle. Twelve thousand workmen were present, and the Emperor William, besides sending a reign ing prince as his representative, wrote a letter of condolence. The crown prince, Bismarck and Von Moltke also sent sympathetic let ters. No ordinary philanthropist would have been so honored; but Mr. Krupp was not an ordinary philanthropist. He was an anti poverty society all by himself. Probably no other private citizen in the world has done so much to relieve pressure upon the means of subsistence by reducing the popu lation. Mrs. Nixon and son, last week, had a narrow escape from the sav age jaws of what is known as a mountain lion. They were en gaged in fishing along tho Neba lem river when attacked by the beast, and made their escape by leaping into the water and wading to the other side. After vou get on your ear and make up your mind to stop your paper or advertisement to make tho editor feel humiliated, just poke your finger into a bucket of water anu tnen pun it out anu look for the hole. Then you will know how sadlv ou are missed.
