It is believed the genuine Pete
Olscn worked in a mine at Car
bonado, W. T., a few days, but
became alarmed and left there the
first part of this month, not stop
ping to draw his pay for work done.
The total number of immigrants
lauded during the month of June
at Castle Garden was 46,580, an
increase of 10,828 on the arrivals
of June 1886; 61,133 foreigners
were landed during the month of
May last.
The river is undermining the
town of East Atchisou, Mo. Up
ward of fifty acres have already
been swept away, and the people
near the river have been forced to
nastilv remove tneir nouses or
abandon them.
On his return to St. Paul gener
al manager Oakes of the Northern
Pacific told a newspaper man
about the progress of work on dif
ferent lines. He said: "A road
is now being built, called the Ore
gon & Washington Territory, from
Wallula Junction southeasterly
into the wheat country of the
Snake river. This is being done
by private enterprise in opposition
to the Oregon Railway Naviga
tion company. There is no.agree
raent for lease by the Northern
Pacific, but only for a traffic ar

The Locks to he Inspected

waterway convention a committee
to inspect the'work at the Cascade
locks and to report at the meeting
at Astoria on August third, will
visit the locks to-day. They will
be joined there by senator Dolph,
who, after examining the works at
the Cascades, will go to The Dalles
and other points in eastern Ore

Pacific Coast Electrical Construc
tion company has sued J. C. Trull
inger to recover $1,586. Plaintiff
alleges that they sold to defendant
an electrical plant which they had

and that all that was paid plaintiff
was $3,205.
A new cannery is being built on
the Coquille, near Pershbaker's
mill, by the Mount Hood packing
company, which will be ready by
the time fishing commences. It
will have a capacity of 400 cases
daily. J. W. Hume's cannery,
above Parkersburg, which has
been changed to a steam cannery,
has a capacity of 700 cases a day.
