UPSHUE, Astoria, Or, A SCIENTISTS WARNlNa i Synopsis of a Remarkable Lectnri Delivered by Dr. H. E. Hammond Befor the National Scientist Convention. " Wo call this an 'age of progress , and so in many respects it is, but I do not hesitate to declare most emphati cally that in many things that consti tute true happiness we are simply children. Let us see : We are startled constantly by the sudden death of some man who seemed the picture of health. He thought he was well. Occasionally his appetite was poor, but then in a few days afterward it was ravenous. He felt strange pains Bhooting through his body, but as they did not stay long he forgot them. His head pained him periodically, he was somewhat paler than common, and was unaccountably tired, but he felt comparativelv well and vigorous. And yet ne suddenly died ! It is a shame to our boasted civili zation. Dr. Hammond then instanced a number of persons well known to him who had died in great agony, although they had experienced few THE SUDDEN DEATH. symptoms and litlle pain, and con tinued : "Why is it that so many little children are to-day staunted, and ap parently blighted for life? Because those early and inevitable diseases, measles, scarlatina, etc., have so weakened certain organs that nature cannot do her work, and the child languishes, perhaps dies. Look at the list of women who die in child birth, and why is it? Simply because their maternal organs have been so weakened by the most terrible of all diseases that they cannot withstand the fearful sudden strain that is brought to bear upon them. How many women escape monthly agonies ? And" yet nature never intended that pain or inconvenience should attend ihe operation of her natural laws. The solemn and terrible fact is that men and women drag along, die, and are buried, and their friends and the doctors say heart disease, apolexy, pneumonia, congestion, convulsions, when the cause lay far back of these things and was Bright'a disease of the kidneys. That was the inward cause ; these are the outward mani festations. Every disease must have a root, just as certainly as every plant. Kidney disease is the great root from which most modern dis eases, no matter wh at their name may be, actually spring. "But because the kidneys are so important bo delicate, and so power ful, they require the greatest care in treatment. Ever since the day when Dr. Bright discovered the connection between morbid outward B3TnptomB and internal decay, physicians, scien tists, and chemists have sought for a pure and powerful relief. It has been a ditlicult, often a fruitless search. Many remedies 'are now before the pub lic, but so far as I have been able to learn by chemical analysis and actual test, only one pos sesses absolute" I merit and power. I nave seen a number of cases, and learn ed from unques- that puny cniLD. tionable sources of many others, where the -preparation Hunt's Rem edy has been almost remarkable in its results. One case in particular was that of a prominent banker re siding in New York, whose family nhvsicians. assisted by the best coun sel that city could produce, declared his case to bo hopeless, and who was afterward restored to perfet health by the means 1 have named. have not hesitated to use it freely among my patients, and from the results I nave secured, I shall continue to do so." The doctor explained how men and women should live in order to meet this terrible malady, and instanced several additional cures which had followed the use of the remedy before referred to. In concluding, he said: "If men and women could only be aroused to a realization of their actual danger; to a sense of what is before tliem unless they take prompt ana proper action, and then by a correct course of life and the use of just the jight means seek to prolong their lives, most of the present suffering and untimely deaths might and would be avoided." A serious fire has been raging on Salmon creek, Nasel, during the early part of the week toward the two Salmon creek camp3 of Mdntyre's, making jumps of 400 yards at a time. With the dying down of the wind at night the fire gradually fell away und the mo mentary danger of burning the camps out passed away. Mr. Mc Intyre had a force of men at work fighting fire and checking its pro gress, lie has over a million feet of log which are in danger of burning if fire reaches the camp. A foot race occurred between Robt. Mclntyre and Wra. Hodge Sunday near Nasel for $40 a side. The race was won by Mclntyre, and about 8100 changed hands on the result. BefoieJ. M. Statements and Counter Statements. Sax Fkakcisco, July 21. It is stated here that negolfations have been completed betweeu the Northern Pacific company and the Pacific Coast Steamship com pany by which two fint-class steamers will be run bf tween this city and Tacoma. The Bulletin this evening says, with reference to the rumor that the Pacific Coast Steamship company now had entered into an agree ment with the Northern Pacific railroad company to run a line of steamers between San Francisco and Tacoma to make connections with that road, that ex-Gov. Per kins, of Goodall, Perkins & Co., general agents of the steamship compau, stated to-day that no such agreement has as yet been entered into, the steamship com pany, Mr. Perkins stated, were taking freight for all parties on the northern coast alike. At yester dey's convention of the junior or der of united american mechan ics, representing a membership of 10,000 in Pennsylvania, a resolu tion was adopted that a memorial from the order be presented to the next congress, asking that a per capita tax be imposed on for eign immigrants landing at Amer ican ports. Congress will also be asked to prohibit the landing of pauper immigrants, and also to pass a law requiring that men of foreign birth shall live as citizens twenty-oue years before becoming eligible to office. Decline of Hero "Worship". The American people are not so much given to hero worship now as in the last generation 1 have been interested lately to observe how even our most distinguished public men go up and down the land, show themselves at the great hotels and in other public places, and don't even attract enough at tention to make people look around. I sat at dinner with Chauncey M. Depew in a Chicago hotel, and this was the topic of our conversation. Said he: "There are four United States senators iu this house, and three ex-cabinet officers, and they come and go and no one stops to look at them. When I was a boy I would have walked twenty miles to "see a United States senator." Ameri can Magazine. A KKMKUY FOK CHILLS AD FEVKK. Rochestkb, N. Y. Dec. 10, 1SS5. Four years ago I contracted a hard eolef that settled on my lungs. I had a severe chill, followed ,by high fever, raging headache, pain on my left Bide over the lung, and every time a fit of coughing catno on, which was every fow minutes, it was terrible to Tear thepafn. I thought it meant an attack of pneumonia, as I went through a two-month siege of tli at disease, and it came on just the same way. As it was night I thought I would wait until morning before sending for a doctor. Fortu nately a h&lf-box of Allcock's Porous Fistkbs was fonnd in the possession of a friend, who boarded with us. One of these was put on my throat ; two on ray chest, and one on my back over the left shoulder blade' I then had a hot foot bath. After again getting into bed, it sewned hut a few minutes when an my symptoms were relieved; the skin became quickly moist ; I coughed only at intervals, and then with very little effort, and in about an hour I was in a sound sleep, from which I did not awake until morn ing. I resumed business in two days. H. F. Flutcuek. The male wasp never htings.
