Glass Eyes.
i A German paper makes the
'statement that more than two
million glass eyas are made every
year in German and Switzerland,
j while one French house manufac
tures mree r.uwireu tnousamt oi
them annually. The pupil is
tnade of colored glass, and some
times red lines are painted on the
inner surface to simulate the veins.
The largest number of these e es
are bought by laborers who are
exposed to fire and consequently
liable to lose an eye. The expres
sion of the eyes is almost solely
due to the movements of the up
per eyelids; and this is the reason
that we may see a man with a
glass ev-e a hundred times before
we discover his infirmity.
There is a firm in Berlin that
employs two hundred girls who
would be thrown out of employ
ment if war preparations should
cease. Ihey manufacture little
bundles of antiseptic dressing ma
terial, with which all German
soldiers are to be supplied in fu
ture, so that they may be
able to dress their own wounds in
the absence of a surgeon. Fifteen
thousand of these packages are
made every day. As the work
calls for the greatest cleanliness,
the girls are all dressed in white
linen cloaks, and are strictly for
bidden to bring victuals or any
thing else into the room where
they work.
