There is now S1.000 deposited with
J. F. Halloran, to be given to the win
ner of the 200-yard foot race between
Pete Grant and Ed. Eea to-morrow
afternoon. The race will be run
about three o'clock on Water street
in the vicinity of the O. E. & N. dock.
In another column is announced
the marriage of Mr. Charles F.
Flanders and Miss Nellie McGuire,
daughter of Hon. G. A. McGuire, of
Clatsop. The newly married couple
have the congratulations and good
wishes of a large circle of acquaint
ances and friends.
There is little or no change in
salmon matters. Thursday showed
a little improvement, but it let down
again Friday and yesterday, boats
ooming in with one or two fish, tho
highest boat heard of having eight
een. An improvement in the run is
looked for this week.
Oregon peaches of fine quality are
in market; raspberries aro about go
ing out; strawberries, large and lus
cious aro still plenty; the apples take
on a riper and more appetizing ap
pearance; cherries, unsurpassed for
flavor, are in abundance, and grapes
at fancy prices are for sale.
The new steamer WalhisTci ia ready
for business between here and
Yoang's river points. She will leave
Gray's wharf every Friday, and leave
Kamm's farm on her return trip the
next morning. Capt. J. H. D. Gray
is the agent and ho or Capt Jno. G.
Blake on board will tend to any busi
ness connected with the vessel.
"One Hundred Minutes with the
People of Jerusalem" was the title of
a very interesting lecture delivered by
Wad-el-Ward at Liberty Hall last
evening, being tho last of the course,
and which, with tho accompanying
tableaux, songs and costumes, was
greatly enjoyed by those present.
To-night there will be a union meet
ing at Liberty Hall, Tinder the aus
pices of the Y. M. 0. A., conducted by
the distinguished lecturer.
Mrs. Johanna Bochau, whose pros
tration was spoken of in yesterday's is
sue, passed quietly away at nine
o'clock yesterday morning. Deceased
was a native of Holstein, and was in
the 71st year of her age. Her
daughter, Mrs. Capt. Bochau, at The
Dalles, was telegraphed to last Thurs
day, and is expected down on the
Telephone this afternoon. The
funeral will be from the house of her
grandson, Wm. Pohl, at ten o'clock
Tuesday morning.
Tn the justice court yesterday in the
case wherein Sam Johnson was the
prosecuting witness and Mike Erick
aon va the defendant, justice Cleve
land dismissed the case, which was a
trivial one, and taxed the costs to the
prosecuting witness. Another case
wherein the same parties were iu the
same relative position came np short
ly afterward, and resulted iu tho de
fendant being fined S20. The net re
sult of the two suits was that both
parties were cinched, and at a slight
outlay found out that this is a bad
time of year to monkey with the.band
wagon.
By direction of the board of state
land commissioners, treasurer Webb
has begun to distribute to the treas
urers of different counties their pro
portionate share of interest which
has accrued during the past year on
the irreducible school fund. The
amount being disbursed is 87,400,
juBt $1 for each person of school age
in the state. The school fund now
amounts to $1,200,000, and is increas
ing at the rate of from 15,000 to
820,000 per month. The present dis
tribution is the largest ever made,
the laBt amounting to 90 cents for
each person of school age.

weather is reported at IJtica, Syra
cuse, Clevel.iL'J. Detroit. Pittsburg
and Chicago; at Pittsburg two fatal
cases of suastroke and a number of
ser;ou prostrations from heat are re
ported. The iron aud steel mills
were compelled to close during the
heat of the day.
Cincinnati, Ohio, July 1C Tho
temperature was two degrees hotter
at noon to-day than yesterday. At
noou there were two prostrations
from the heat among laborers ex
posed to the extreme heat; there
were four deaths from the heat yes
terday and four more have been re
ported up to noon to-day. Many la
borers have given up work on account
of the extreme heat.
TERBIBLE KUIiBOAD ACCIDENT.
St. TnoMAS, Ont., July 16. Tho
number killed in the railroad disaster
yesterday was nineteen and the num
ber injureed is about forty. After
the collision occurred the passengers
commenced emerging from the car
windows aud every available mean3
of egress was being taken advantage
of. Engineer Donnelly was found in
the cab with his hand on the lever
still, a3 if endeavoring to make the
air brakes work.

New Yobk, July 1G Fire was dis
covered about three o'clock this
morning in the five-story brick bnild
ing of the Metropolitan Storage ware
house on Fifty-eighth street, between
Broadway and Sixth avenue. In a
few minutes the flames monnted np
through the structure and before the
firemen arrived the whole place was
a raging furnace. The warehouse
formed an "L" within tho Casino
building, and for awhile it was feared
that that beautiful temple of light
opera wonld be in ashes, but it was
saved by strenuous efforts of the fire
men. Soon after the firemen had
got to work at the Storage warehouse
a terrifio explosion occurred and sev
en men were blown through tho win
dow into tho street, all severely
burned; the damages are estimated
at half a million dollars, although
it
may be much more.

Utioa, N. Y., July 1G. The special
train which conveys the president and
party to the Thousand Isles left
Utica at the appointed hour. Sec
retary and Mrs. Fairchild boarded the
train in Utica in the morning. At
Holland Patent the party was further
augmented by Miss Eose Cleveland,
L. L. Yomans and wife, brother-in-law
of the president, and Miss Carrie
and Miss Mary L.Hastings, president
Cleveland's nieces.
PENNSYLVANIA FOREST FIRES.
Pittsburg, July 16. Telegrams
from Brockwayville, in the lumber
regions ut Pennsylvania, report forest
fires raging in every direction, and
fears aro entertained for tho lumber
settlements. A large force is at work
fighting the flames, but so far all ef
forts to check them have been fruit

New Yobk, July 16. The bank
statement shows the reserve increase
to be 31,573,000; tho banks hold 879,
575 in excess of the legal rule.
SAN FRANCISCO WHEAT RECEIPTS.
San Francisco, July 16. The re
ceipts of wheat for the first ten days
of the new harvest year are 35,000
centals, a3 compared with 26,000 cen
tals during the same period last year.
The grain so far received does not
grade nz well as that of last aear.

"Daddy Nolan" is a very pleas ing
play. It 13 full of brightness and
vivacity, tinted and toned by oloudlets
of sorrow, which flit swiftly athwart
tho face of the story, and, passing,
leave the smilo3 and joy to shine
and sparkle more fully. It is well
told and compaotly constructed.
Thore is not a superfluous word in it,
and though trite in theme and not
novel in incident, the interest never
flags for an instant, and it is homely,
honest of purpose and wholesome
withal. Daddy's sorrows depicted at
the close of the first act last nigkk by
Mr. Sully brought tears to the eyes
of careless people blase profession
als, who sauntered in to while away a
dull evening, to "guy" the performers
and to get through the time with as
little loss to themselves as possible;
workaday folks, men, boys, gamim,
children, ladies and others, who came
to laugh only. This was success in
deed, and when the second act opened
with its wealth of stage business and
never halting action, "Daddy Nolan"
was proclaimed a rattling good play.

ant litle play, very well staged aud
capitally acted, should go to see Mr.

was True. He is the W. H. True who
figures in tho follewing:
San Francisco, July 16. Miss
Bella Charleston, an attractive young
lady of this city, has returned from
Portland, Oregon, and tells a woeful
tale of desertion on the part of her
lover, w. II. True, of that city. In
I the summer of 18S2 Miss Charleston
! was living with her widowed mother
on Market street, when True came to
J board with them. In a short time
irue, who was a dispenser in drugs,
and Miss Bella became engaged. He
procured a marriage license, and the
girl lived with him as hia wife,
her mother being unaware that
a legal ceremony had not
been performed In March last
True having dubbed himself "Dr."
finding San Francisco business too
dull, betook himself to Portland,
leaving his pretty wife behind. He
had not been a month in the latter
place when fickleness took hold of
him and he wooed and wedded Miss
Maud Longfellow. Not hearing from
the "doctor" his early love made
haste to join him. It was there she
learned of his faithlessness and mar
riage to another woman. He admit
ted ho had wronged her, bnt could
make no reparation. He fled with
his bride to Eugene City, Seattle, As
toria and other places, but Miss
Charleston followed everywhere.
Finally he assured her he would
join her in one month in San Fran
cisco. Seeing that nothing could be
gained by remaining she returned
here heartbroken.

The tide table for the past six
weeks has been badly upset in mark
ing the ebb and flow of the tides in
this locality by reason of the high
water, and not till within the past few
days has tho inward sweep of tide
from the ocean resumed anything
like its usual dimensions. Daring
this time the great discharge of fresh
water has met and pushed back the
salty current setting inward twice a
day, the rush of wateront to sea over
powering the incoming flood and
forcing its own way many miles be
yond the mouth of the river so that
vessels in the offing dipping np water
would find it but slightly brackish.
During the middle of the ebb and on
to the time of low water the current
past the city and down over the bar
was something tremendous, and when
later on came the straggle between
the flood tide and the current fed by
the meeting of snows in the far off
mountains it was n matter of vital im
portance to the fishermen who found
there was virtually no flood tide to
come in on.

828 cases salmon went overland, from
the Celumbia: from April 1st to July
1st, '87, 96,676 cases were shipped
everland: for the three months of '86,
27,101 cases went to San Francisco
by eteamer: for the three months of
this year, 10,411 cases were so
shipped. In 1885, 232,819 cases went
eastward by rail: in 1886, 266,45i cases.
In 1885, 102,610 cases were shipped to
San Francisce: in 1886, 108,846. In
1884-5, 317,000 cases salmon went to
England: in 1885-6,213,947: in 1886-7,
162,556 cases.
