Ox Sunday, October 25, 1885, the Swiss people, by a vote of 229,619 against 157,035 insisted on upon alter ation in the Federal constitution to enable them to figlit with more suc cess "Alkoholismus." During the sub sequent eighteen months the whole confederation, every canton and every commune, from end to end, has been excitedly debating the question, in preparation for the day of decision, Sunday, May 15, when the entire peo ple, as ultimate sovereign was called to give its definite yes or no for or against the "SchnapspesL" The total reported at Berne up to last accounts, stood as follews: Teas, 201,135; nays, 137,091. The returns from a Jew communes have still to be mfl The "interests" have done their utmost, sparing neither agitation nor money in order to lead the people. But the stolid indifference of the Switzer to electioneering argument is traditional. He makes up his own mind and quietly waits until the day of the "Folksvote" (the Referendum) to record it In every canton except the extreme old Calvinist Geneva and the equally old Roman Catholic Frei burg, little Appenzell-inner-Bhoden, and Solothurh, the majority of the yeas, is quite a political and social portent In Geneva and Freiburg the mass treble and quadruple yeas. The vote of the "military," which is taken separately, is 4 to 1 against "Al koholismus." The vote of the chief towns is remarkable. Thus Zurich gave 13,263 yeas and only 2,220 nays; Basel, 4,881 yeas, 684 nays; Bern, 4,707 yeas,. 881 nays; Lausanne, 2,462 yeas, 618 nays. It is evident that the strength of "Alkoholismus" in Switz erland lies in the purely country pop ulation. -., ..- i - ' A MATTER OF OPINION. The excommunication of Dr. Mo Glynn, thinks the Alta, enables that gentleman to reopen discussion of the land question in direct antagonism to the authorities of the church. The issue is simple. Dr. McGlynn holds that private ownership of land is im polite and impious, an offense againBt man and a sin against God. Those who own land are, therefore, decidedly in contempt of court, and can purge themselves only by abandoning their possessions and byjseeking Divine for giveness by prostrations and penances which the doctor has not prescribed. . He. says that -he is unfrocked because he "taught the doctrine that God made the land for the people." The quarrel between the doctor and the church may be dismissed with the ob servation that if ho teach that doc trine, and-the church teach the, oppo site -by maintaining that private ownership in land is .not a sin against Heaven, either he or the church must yield or they must separate. Neither would yield, and so by act of the stronger they part company. The church, to be no longer responsible for him, says so in the only way known to ita laws, by excommunication. Even, so did the Methodist church treat the heresy of Dr. Thomas and the Presbyterian that of Professor Swing, and so the authorities of An- dover have recently administered dis cipline to Professor Smith. The form and phrase in which any organ igation may choose to relieve itself of all responsibility for an individual are, to the rest of the world, secondary matters. Churches and parties are for the pur pose of teaching certain truths and principles, and this they cannot do if they fellowship non-believers in those truths and principles. As long as politicians put a test to voters at a primary, they cannot impeach a church for using a test at the com munion table. Dr. McGlynn is no more a moral martyr because he iB ex cluded, from the church than is Mr. McGlynn because his vote is rejected at the primary. Neither is the vic tim of persecution, because each has chosen to set up his private judgment against that of the organization which had fellowshipped him in the belief that he agreed with its judgment. Of the 76,373 "superfluous -women" in Massachusetts more than 85 per cent are widows. A Boston corre spondent otthe Chicago Times shows that the preponderance of females in Massachusetts is not due, save in small degree, to the emigration of young men. The principal cause is the hazardous nature of the avoca tions of a large proportion of the wage workers of the state. Of the Glouces ter fishermen, from 90 to 160 are lost at sea every year, and with few excep tions, each of these fatalities makes another widow and more orphans. The annual slaughter of railroad em ployes, miners, factory-men and oth ers in. kindred occupations is appall- ing. Measures for the protection of the wage earners against avoidable perils incident to their avocations are meeting with increased popular favor. The legislature has already enacted two laws of this character, which promise beneficent results, and they will doubtless be followed by other legislation in the same line. There is a cruel custom in vogue of erecting in the house temporary altars to the dead in the shape of preserved flowers, photographs of the funeral paraphernalia, and other un wholesome memories that only serve to defeat their end. Better forget fulness than such pagan rites as these. Better still to keep our dead alive by our daily spiritual walk with them, 'the doing of nobler deeds in their name, the reaching after the di vine heights to which they have at tained. We can never forget them if we would. But the dead and with ered relics of their poor clay is but a selfish, worldly way in which to re member them, useless to them and most injurious to the living. There are spare chambers in the heart in which to hang the funeral wreath, side by side with the crown of rejoicing. Men should not kick out of harness too soon and think they are "loo old for work." Some of the brightest and most useful writers and thinkers of the world to-day are well along in years. Bismarck is past seventy. Grevy is seventy-six, king "William is past nine ty, queen Victoria has entered upon the fifty-first year of her reign. In our own country Evarts is past seven ty, and is a possible candidate for president; Dudley Field is over eighty, and as springy as a boy; Simon Cam eron is eighty-seven and has any amount of fire and snap. Boston has six editors that are over eighty years old and doing active work. Young fellows of sixty or thereabouts can af ford to buckle down for n good long spell yet Cheap Caynse Ponies. Charles Kahn, of Klamath Indian agency country, is in the city with sixty head of cayuse ponies, trying to sell to our boys and men. His $30 ponies are worth $15 or S3, and the others in like proportion. Salem Sentry. Famous Women. Madame Trebelli, tho greatest of living contraltos who has traveled extensively, in fact visited every county and city of note in the world. has just departed from the slope of the Pacific, and often expressing the greatest admiration for the beauty and grandeur of our scenery and the delightful mildness of our olimate, left the following written note as a living expression of her opinion in the hands of a Portland druggist, the original of which can bo seen on de mand.
