They seem to have an idea, that the scope of country to bebenefited by opening the Columbia is about the size of Rhode Island and com prises a country or two of Oregon. The area opened up by this im provement is larger than the whole New England states, and over half of this is Uncle Sam's land. As for the Columbia, the rivers of all New England run into one and then turned into the Columbia would not make four inches differ ence in the depth of the stream. "With equal justice they should de mand that the state of Mississippi keep the mouth of that river open, or that San Francisco open the Sacramento. The trouble with the good citizens "down east" is that they want the world, they ask $100,000 to dredge Passamaquady creek, and $40,000 for improving the navigable rivers of Rhode Isl and. They want raw material admitted free of duty so they will have to pay less to the west for it j and they want the duty kept on manufactured goods so the west will have to pay them more for them. They want all the appropriations kept east of the Alleghanies, (and they kept them there until the Mississippi valley out numbered them) and they want all the balanoe of the country to put up the money. We heard of a Rhode Islander once whose wife asked him to buy her a darning needle. He went out to the barn and hunted up an eKS and took it down to the store. There ho said to the merchant, "Will you give me a darning needle for an eggVJ "Yes," said the merchant handing it to him. Well, said he! "That's trade; can't you treat?" "Yes," said the merchant, "what will you have." "Well, a glass of sherry will do." This was drawn and he was about to drink when his eye fell on the egg which the merchant still held in his hand, and he paused and said: "Say, can't you give a fellow an egg in it?" The egg was brok en in the glass and happened to be a double yelk; It was downed, however, and as they started to ward the front of the store this no ble representative of little Rhody whined out, -"say, that was a double egg; 3'ou owe me another darning needle." It is exactly the way the N. E. of the N. E. of this great country gives it to the bal ance of it, and the worst of it is, it gets away with the whole busi ness. . Bavaria has bad luck with her kings. The late king Ludwig be came insane and committed sui cide, and his successor, king Otto, is so dangerously demented that four physicians take turn in con stantly guarding him. His favor ite amusement is shooting peasant boys! To humor this hobby he is kept supplied with rifles loaded with powder only, rresently a boy crosses the road, the king shoots, the boy drops, and is car ried away by escited individuals who have "accidentally" witnessed the scene. Seedless to say the boy is unhurt, and gets five cents for his trouble. Heroes and Heroine. There are a few "who endure bodl y troubles without complaint, Did you ever meet among the heroes or heroines of jour acquaintance If any such there have been one with a ellowish cast of countenance and that jaundiced aspect generally, which the most unpractised eye recognizes as the product of a disordered liver, who did not complain, and peevishly too, of the soreness or the recalcitrant organ, ot pains beneath the right shoulder blade, of dyspeptic sym ptoms, constipation and headache? of course vou never did, and of course the in dividual was XOT using Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, or he would not so have looked so have complained. For sa le by W E.Dement & Co". - Praying Tor Bain. Cambridge, 111., June 30. The country is burning up under a blazing sun. No such drouth as now prevails has existed in this section of the country for many years. The roads are ankle-deep with dust, the pastures are brown, the leaves, on forest and shade trees shriveled up, and each hot breath of air from the cloudless horizon drives them away in showers. Creeks have run dry and the water in the larger streams is at a lower stage than was ever known before. Many wells have been pumped dry, and in cases water for family use has to be car ried one or two miles. There has not been a soaking rain in this part of the country since March. Two showers in April and one each in May and June had but a temporary effect on crops. Unless a heavy rain comes speedily all kinds of grain will lie well nigh destroyed. Stunted yellow spears bending disconsolately over im mense beds of dust are the only evidence that the farmers sowed any corn this year. The leaves of the fruit trees are falling off, and the fruit which promised to bo plenty is wrinkled and dried to the stem. Raspberries look as though they were producing a crop of shot, s o infinitesimal and hard are the berries. The drought has become so ter rible that public prayers are being offered for rain. The fences along the country roads and the dead walls of villages are plastered with huge yellow and red bills calling for special service at the district school houses and churches. The following poster attracts particular attentien: : PRAYER FOR HAlN. : ! SPECIAL SERYICE WILL BE HKLD j j IN THE I CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH.' I TUESDAY, JUNE 2J.-AT lu A. CAMBRIDGE, ILL., JUNK 2S, 1837.1 A book on etiquette informs you "how to tell a man larger than yourself that he is a liar." But the best way is-to tell him through the telephone, "and then go out into the country for a few days. Scarlet Feer. Darbys Prophylactic FiuM is un equalled in the treatment of .Scarlet Fever.
