A Very Ungallant Commissioner.
Washington, July 13. Com-j
missioner sparKS is again 10 tne
front. His shortsightedness pre
venting him in his land policy frojn
seeing but one thing at & time is em
phasized by some of the forty cases
which Have been held" up at the
land office, awaiting the decision
of the secretary upon a test case
of appeal from the decision of the
commissioner, regarding the right
of married women to make timber
land entry. Timber land entries,
under the law, are confined entire
ly to the states of California, Ore
gon and Nevada and Washington
territory, and simply allow any
person to purchase land, not to ex
ceed 160 acres, at the minimum
pjice of &2.50 per acre, which
can be proved to be entirely
timber or stone land. There is no
entry, as it is understood in pre
emption cases to be made, and no
qualifications required of the pur
chaser under the laws, exoegt to
prove that this land is not occu
pied by another claimant, and of
such a quality of land as can be
used for no other purpose. Sparks
has decided that a married woman
is not - qualified to enter these
lands, but gives no reasons there
for except' that ho had heretofore
ueoiaeu ima a married woman naa
no right to make a homestead,
timber culture, desert land or pre
emption entry. No argument as
to why a married woman is not
as well qualified to purchase tim
ber land as she is to purchase cod
fish or a house and lot is given,
ana cases wnicn nave neon re
ceived by the law officers of the
interior department are treated
with not a little impatience.

Heroes and Heroine.
There are a few who endure bodily
troubles -without eomplalnt. Did you ever
meet among the heroes or heroines of your
acquaintance If say such there hare been
one with a yellowish east of countenance
and that Jaundiced aspect generally, which
the most unpractised eye recognizes at the
product of a disordered liver, who did not
complain, and peevishly too, of the soreness
of the recalcitrant organ, of pains beneath
the right shoulder blade, of dyspeptle sym
ptoms, constipation and headaebe? Of
course you never did, and of eourse the In

King Kalakana In Danger.
San Francisco, July 13. The
latest reports indicate that the fate
of king Kalakaua was trembling
in the balance when the steamer
.itwfraiajleft Honolulu, although
the first reports gathered in this
city on her arrival indicated that
everything hall quieted down.
The situation briefly is that the
proposed constitution was sub
mitted to the king, and ho refused
to sign it. On the one hand, the
king hopes to stave off action until
the arrival of the English war
ships, which he expects will sus
tain him; and on the other hand,
the people, angered by his refusal
to sign tho constitution, seem not
to be inclined to let the matter
stand until the war ships arrive.
From this feeling, the opinion is
that since the steamer Australia
left Honolulu definite action has
been taken by the people, and it
is not improbable that king Kala
kaua has been dethroned, that is,
unless he has agreed to sign the
constitution.
There is a force of 6,000 or
7,000 men at workon the Oregon
& California grade, which is nenrly
completed. They expect to re
duce the staging to twelve miles
by the latter part of this week.
