A committee to investigate the sal mon fisheries aid report thereon, came down the sivcr yesterday after noon and will remain in this vicinity for some dajs. It consists of Mate senator L. T.Bann, representatives J. W. Maxwell and W. Pomeroy. Major "W. A. Jones, who has been commis sioned by the United Stales govern ment to report on tho Columbia river salmon fisheries, is expected down to day. By invitation fish commission ers Eeed, Thompson and Campbell accompany the party. They visited tho upper Columbia last Fridav. While there, says the News, they ex amined tho wheels, some eight or ten in number, in the vicinity of the Cas cade rapids. Three wheels have been swept away. On Saturday the meth ods of capturing the royal" Chinook at The Dalles were inqnired into. There is but one wheel at this point, the fishing here being nearly nil done bv means of dip nets. The party did not go to Celilo fishery, as all the wheels at that point had been swept awav. It was learned that the largest amount caught in one day during the present season was eleven tons by means of dip nets. Boss, coroner of said county, upon view of the body of W. E. Colvin, then and there lying dead, upon the oath of S. M. Coffinbury, W. T. Ross. J. J. Beaten, W. R. McFarlane, C. A. Root, Jim Van, good and lawful men of the said county, who, being duly summoned and sworn to inquire into all the circumstances attending the death ot the said W. E. Colvin, and by whom the same was produced, and in what manner, and when and where the said W. E. Colvin came to his death, do say upon their oaths aferesaid: We, the jury in the above cause, do find that tbo deceased was a native of America, aged about 26 years, and that he came to his death by drowning in the slough near West port, on the 24th day of June, 1S87, off from a whisky ecow kept by one Charles Eaton.
