H) "ahTOKIA, OREGON? THU1MDA& 1" JULY 7, ISS7 Job printing of every description at bottom figures at The Astoriax job office. The A. B. Field goes to Tillamook this morning with genoral mercan dise. The county court was in session yesterday, listening to arguments in road caseB. In thepplice cgurt yesterday Dr. Bresfield was fined $10 for disorderly conduct. , s The Besctae'cltrb cleared -S260 on their ice cream and lemonade stand on thePourth. A force of men fs employed grading the street in front of the residence of Hon. I. W. Case. The Oregon Baited yesterday for San Francisco; she took no salmon. The Columbia is due this morning. The Portland offices of the O. K. & N. Co., the Oregon Short Line and fhe"TJnion Pacific were consolidated la$t Tuesday. The celebration committee awarded two prizes to the Dophnnnies, S15 to the "Starvation Army." and $10 to the "Irish Couple." On a reoent visit by A. Balmauuo and Peter Jordan to Crooked creek, the latter slaughtered two black bear, one'of them a big fellow. In addition to the prizes awarded the hose teams in Monday afternoon's contests the judges awarded the special prize of $20 to Juveniles. George Abernetby has about an acre of cranberries planted atKnappa, which gives promise of abundant har vest Should the yield prove satis factory the area will be increased. CoL Jno. Adair made the first trip with his Clatsop ferry boat last Tues day, going from landing to landing in twelve minutes. He expects to put it in regular operation in a short time. Though an extra largo edition was run off, yesterday's daily was dis posed of before noon. The weekly, out Saturday morning, will contain the same matter, with other interest ing news articles. The Canadian Pacific Co.'s steamer Sardonyx arrived in yesterday morn ing from Vancouver. She had 330 tons tea, a portion of the cargo of the Parthia, which arrived at "Van couver from Hong Kong on the 4th. A fiw-alam at 11:45 yesterday morningwas caused by the burning of ajine next the residence of George Hill, on Chenamus, above Lafayette. It was put out with buckets. It caught" from some dry moss on the roof and burned quite a hole before' being extinguished. The "News has an item in yester day's issue entitled, A Chinese Mur der at Astoria." There has been no Chinaman nor any one else murdered here. There were suspicious circum stances attending the recent death of a Chinaman at Elliott's Landing twenty-five miles from here, which may be the one to whom the News refers. . The San Francisco Daily Commer cial News has published its annual review number, a valuable statistical issue. A list of marine mishaps on the coast for '80-87 occupies seven columns. It if a frightful record for that terrible north coast, and a proud one for the Columbia river, which is conspicuously absent in the list of disasters. An increase of less than $3,000 in the annual receipts of the postoffice would entitle us to a free delivery service, which would be a great con venience. Then if the streets were numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, etc., north and south, and the houses numbered, everybody in town wouldn't have to go to the postoffice to see "if the mail is in yet." The Telegram thinks it possible that - there will be a race between the Telephone and Alaskan somo of these fine days. The Astorian sin- oerely - hopes not. Both are fine, speedy-boats, butit would do neither any good to have a race. Steamboat racing is poor business, and in a bus iness point of view the reverse of satisfactory to steamboat men. Both Capt Scott and Capt Troup are doubtless men of too much prudence and hdrse sense to race their boats. After giving the four prisoners in the county jail, M. Clayton, Jno. F. Patterson, S.MErbe and-A. Norris. their breakfasts yesterday morning, janer uurran lei mem out m tne main corridor for exercise. Shortly before noon he entered and found they had beguiled their leisure hours by prying out from the stone founda tions of the jail about a dozen bould ers averaging 60 lbs. weight and car rying them to. an unoccupied cell. But one layer of stone lay between them and freedom when discovered. The easier way would have been for them to have gone out through the hole by which Thompson and his comrade escaped some weeks ago and which still affords the same conven ience for egress.
