Some time ago a confidential clerk .
skipped the gutter.with several thou
sand dollars in ready cash. While it
was determined to hunt him dorrnat
all hazards, the firm did not feel like
wasting a great deal of money in so
doing. A one-horse country detect
ive was therefore employed, and
after a while he traced his man to
Detroit. The detective didn't pro
pose to share any of the glory with
the Detroit officers, and he slid
around for a week before he learned
that his man was in Windsor. Then
he went over there, still working on
the quiet, and a nice young man at
one of the hotels informed him that
the defaulter had jus t gone to Toronto,
but would be back in a few days.
The pair became fast friends, and the
nice young man had his daily drinks
and cigars, at tfie detective's expense.
The two came over to Detroit, and
atteotJUd the theater, and had good
times, and it was the opinion of the
officer, that he never met such
a mce young man. Finally, a night
or two ago, as they landed from the
boat on the other side, the detective
inquired:
"You must be an agent of some
tort?"
"Oil, no," was the reply, "I am
simply traveling for pleasure."
"YVheredoj'oulivewhenathome?"
"In Indiana."
"Why, I'm from Indiana!"
"Yes, you told me so the first day."
"Whereabouts in Indiana?"
"Yincennes."
"Good gracious! but my home is
nly three miles from Yincennes."
''Yes, I know."
"What did'you do in Yincennes?"
"Clerked for Lath & Shingles.".
"What! Why, that is the very
firm that was robbed !" "
"Yes, I know," was the placid
reply.
"And your name is what?" que
ried the detective.
"William Green!"
"Great Scots ! but you are the chap
who stole the money!" howled the
officer.
"Yes, certainly! What are jTou
going to do about it?" camly replied
the nice young man, as he lighted

Pre-Haphaelitr.
Some of our greatest painters ne j
went abroad. A study of the Sa
masters is of value and assistance :o
aspiring young artists. Whatever
the result may be, it will do no harm,
and to some few it will be a revela
tion and a guide to great success.
The student has a chance to mould a.
style of his own after he has become
familiar with that of the old masters;.
Without a style the originality of a
.painter loses much of its force! 1 hu
pre-Raphaelite painters always put
in a picture what they thought ought
to be there. For instance, in a per
spective view, if a tree was actually
indistinct and the leaves shadow.
and uncertain, the pre-Raphaelife
put it in distinctly in every detail
any way. After Raphael came the
school of impressionists. Its mem
bers pursued the opposite plan and
put in a picture only what was actu
ally seen. In other words, a fidel
ity to nature as instructed by tho
eyes. This is considered the true
method now, and will, in my opinion,
continue to be until the end ot tinu.

Tho most Icorous constitution, and the
strongest physique, are not proor against a
disease, the germs of which Impregnate the
air we breath and the water we drink. The
true preparative, the surest defense. Is to
fortify the system with a medicine which
possesses specific virtues as a safeguard and
remedy. Ilostelter's Stomach Bitters Is
preciselv this article proved by conclusive
tests to oe so. Not only on this continent,
wherever miasma gives birth to the ma'ana
infection, but In the tropics, where fever
and ague assumes its most malignant types,
this incomparable, popular and deserving
medicine has. for over a third of a century,
shown its efficacy. Chills and fovcr, dumb
ague, bilious remittent alike yield to Its In
fluence and are prevented by it. The word
"fail" has no place In the lexicon of possibil

The Olives Tasted Good.
On the 9th of last month Dr. E. E.
Beeman, of Cleveland, 0., heard a
friend say that it was impossible
for a man to eat thirty quails in
thirty consecutive days. The doctor
said it is a popular error, and that
there is no reason why a man may
not eat quail every day as well
aa beef. He said he.could eat two
quails a day for thirty days. The
end of this friendly dispute was a
small wager, and Dr. Beeman be
gan the task of eating sixty quails in
thirty days, a pair a day, one for din
ner, one for supper.
Last evening the thirty days end
ed. A reporter found Dr. Beeman
in McKeant Buckley's restaurant
making preparations to eat the last
quail. The doctor said :
"I have eaten fifty-nine quails and
I feel good. People have said that
it could not be done. I m erely wiBh
to provo the fallacy of this statement
and I think I have done so. I like
quail now just as woll as I did a
month ago when I began to eat them.
I could eat forty more in twenty
days, and I'll bet $500 on it"
The waiter announced that the
last quail was ready and the doctor
entered the dining-room and sat
down at a small table. On a plate,
resting on two pieces of toast, was a
broiled quail. On the table was a
dish of olives, a dish of pickles and
some crackers. The doctor did not
begin to eat immediately. He took
the bird in his fingers and broke off
a leg, but laid it on the plate. Ho
ate' a large olivo and then swallowed
a mouthful of quail.
"I relish that," said he, and
hurriedly ate two more olives.
He finally finished the quail, and the
referee declared him tho winner.
The stakes were trifling and were
presented by Dr. Beeman to the cook
who served the quail.
