A Patent Ice Cooler,
Ho ye that thtrsteth draw near to the
water. This is to give notice to the
public generally that Messrs Utzlnger
aud Liddicoat have placed two of their
patent coolers pro bono publico. One
on Lafayette street opposite the Custom
House and one on "Water street in front
of the office of Mr. William Welch.
These little coolers are portable, easily
moved from place to place as required
and use but one tenth the quantity of
ice required by other 'coolers, and
another pecularity is that the water is
cooled by the ice, without the ice being
mixed with the water, thus no matter
how impure the ice may be, it does not
affect the water you drink it only cools
It Messrs TJtzinger and Liddicoat gener
ously furnish both the machine and the

Refreshments.
In Brief, And to the Point.
Dyspepsia is dreadful. Disordered
liver is misery. Indigestion is a foe
to good nature.
The human digestive apparatus is
one of the most complicated and won
derful things in existence. It is easily
put out of order.
Greasy food, tough food, sloppy
food, bad cookery, mental worry, late
hours, irregular habits, and many
other things which ought not to be,
have made the American people, a
nation of dyspeptics.
But Green's August Flower has
done a wonderful work in reforming
this sad business and making the
American people so healthy that they
can enjoy their mealB and be happy.

One Death From Smallpox.
Minnie McDonnell, the little two-year-old
girl taken to the smallpox
hospital from the house on Frederick
street, died in the hospital yesterday
morning. Tho resident physician.
Dr. Pelbam, says the remaining pa
tients are doing well. The health
office was thronged with children yes
terday afternoon awaiting vaccina
tion, and during the hours allotted to
the public over 120 children were vac
cinated. & F. Alta, June 23.
Unnere.is.iry Misery. j
Probably as much misery conies I
from habitual constipation as from j
any derangement of the functions of j
the body, and it is difficult to cure,
for tho reason that no one likes to
take the niedioines usually pre
scribed. HAMBURG FIGS were
prepared to obviate this difficulty,
and they will be found pleasant to
the taste of women and children. 25

Famous Women.
Madame Trebelli, the greatest of
living contraltos who has traveled
extensively, in fact visited every
county and city of note in the world,
has just departed from the slope of
the Pacific, and often expressing the
greatest admiration for the beauty
and grandeur of our scenery and the
delightful mildness of our climate,
left the following written note as a
livings expression of her opinion in
the hands of a Portland druggist, the
original of which can be seen on de
mand. Pobtland, Or., April G, 1887.
Dear Mr. Wisdem: I have tried your

THE GAMBLER'S APOLOGY.
I rem ember most distinctly in my very
early youth
I developed quite a tendency for sport,
And what I now unbosom will be nothing
but the truth,
For I don't unbosom any other sort;
I had quite a keen desiro for to clean out
Noah's ark,
Which was mainly animalia minus tails,
And Td lay on heavy wagers from the
early dawn to dark
On a race between the elephants and
wnaiea.
I would bet the yellow grampus that he
couldn't beat the horse,
Anrl incitfl tho red ciraffe to trv fivol
miles
With tho piobald alligator, while around
the open course
In my mindFd pocket many little piles;
But when I matched the beetle for a two
mile steeplechase
With the beaver, which was ua'd to steer
tho ark,
I'd scoop in all the money as was in that
little place
And expend it in a manner that wa3
dark.
When I grew a little older I would catch
the cat and dog
And tie them to my toys a cart and
train
And start them down the garden, whilst
behind T& soundly flog
The one as hung most loose upon the
rein;
I would match a duck and chicken or a
rooster and a goose
For runs along the barnyard, while I'd
bet
Imaginary millions, for I then could go
it loose,
And the fascinating feeling's in me yet.
But the best of all tho fun was when I
used to go to school
And bet a mato upon a match with
frogs
At jumping over straw piles, and I'd win,
too, as a rule.
As I would likewise in swimming polly
wogs; And it's from these simple notions I be
lieve the love of sport
Was ingrained into my nature so secure
That I'm ready now to bet you, though
my funds are rather short,
That my spider can run yours, across
the noor.
