visited in all thirteen bands of In

and "Washington territory, and
traveled over 7,000 miles by rail,
500 miles made in road wagons,
and over 100 by stream and lake
in frail birch-bark canoes propelled
by Indians. They travelled 1,500
miles in open sleighs last winter
with the thermometer ranging
from 30 to 60 below zero. The
Indian commissioner complains
that the wor'c of education i
hampered for the lack of sufficii:it
funds.
The agent of a Cincinnati gio

Kentucky town to inquire into the
failure of a grocer, asked to see
the books. The grocer raised his
voice and called to a negro at the
back store. "Hi! you boy hring

lives of Daniel Boone and if there's
a Bible around bring that. This
chap wants to see our books, and
we want him to know that ourj

HOW TO CURE lA BOY OF CROUP.
Mrs. Snuel Nutt, of South
Haven, Kansas, tel!show she saved
the life of her boy.
I have been using Axlcocc's
Pohous Plasters for the last ten
years, principally for a weak back.
Not long ago I found my son very
much inclined to croup. He had a
bad croupy cough, ana a wheezing
Bound in nis lungs every time ho
breathed. He nearly died from the
obstruction of the throat. I covered
him from the throat to the pit of the
stomach with Axlcock's Pobodb
Plabtees. In two houra the cough
ceased and his breathing was much
easier. In & few days h was en
tirely well. I kept the Aixcock's
Porous Piasters on him six days.
Since then, -whenever he Is affected
nith colds in the throat, I never use
anything but an Allcock's Porous
Puistbb, which cures him imme
diately, without any inconvenience.
They are the best preventative of
the croup ever knows, and I would
not be without.them for any consider
ation. "You never knew effeot without
cause," said one disputant. "Yes,"
said the other, triumphantly. UI
have known a hen to scratch all
day without itching & bit." Bos

nected with the management of the
California & Oregon road, and who is
looking for investments in the north
west, informs the Journal this week
thnl the reoort that the company
would build to Astoria leaked out
prematurely and .now the railway peo
ple nope to cover it up uy u ucuwi.
He states that the company do not
wish, as a matter of course, to adver
tise their purposes until preliminary
iu. "mtso soon
as that is fixed," Baid our -aformfu,
"you will see how quicll S .5:ar. '
made, jl earnestly ueu&ve in&c wonc ;
will be fairly started on that road
not later than nest spring. When
yon take into consideration
the importance of Astoria as
a vantage ground, especially to the
Southern Pacific, the proposition to
build a line to that city and hold a
key to the river is one of the busi
ness problems easily worked out at
a glance. Yes, sir, the Sonthern
Pacific is in earnest about securing
a hold of the northwest, as every
move of theirs will indicate. Among
well informed railroad men in San
Francisco it is a generally accepted
theory that the road will be built
to Astoria, and that, too, very short
ly. Of cour&o it is the aim of the
company to keep it quiet likewise
those interested in Portland and the
roads centering there. I propose to
invest in Astoria, also in your terri
tory, as I think yon are on the ove
of coming to the front." From thi3
pointer, we helievo there is more in
the rumor thau more idleness, and
will predict a rapid rise for "onr
metropolis." Pacific Journal June
