Nkw York is credited with
308,000 .wage workers; Philadel
phia, 270,000; Chicago, 106,000:
Boston, 75,000; Cincinnati, 95,
100; Pittsburg, 78,100, and St
Louis, 52,500.
A train is now running on the
Connecticut River railway which
is lighted by electricity from a dy
namo in the baggage car, run by
the. car wheels. This is intended
to take the place, to some extent,
of storage batteries, and the in
ventor, S. H. Barrett, is satisfied
that he has made a workable con
trivance. John Bright, in a letter, says
that the United States, under a
svstem of protection, is burdened
with a large surplus revenue, yet
refuses to lessen duties, thus pro
moting a system of corruption un
equaled in any other country. He
uses this as an argument for the
continuation of England s free-i
trade policy.
Dr. Holmes mentions the fact
that he was born in the same year
(1809) that witnessed the birth of
Gladstone, Tennyson and Lord
Houghton, and suggests that this
promotes humility rather than van
ity. He adds this cemment: "Per
sons of the same year watch each
other, especially as the sands of
life begin to run low, as we can
imagine so many damaged hour
glasses to keep an eye on each
other.
The late ex - vice - president
Wheeler had a great reputation as
a political prophet. He foretold
the panic of 1873, and even went
into the minute details which were
afterward verified. He prophesied
the nomination of Tilden and
Hayes in 1876. He said to Blaine
just before the Cincinnati conven cenven conven
teon: "Brother Blaine,, don't set
your heart upon the presidential
nomination. The next candidate
of the Republican party for presi
dent is now governor of Ohio."
Uncle Sam's assimilating appa
ratus is working over considerable
material into Americans. The
completed statistics of immigra
tion to the United States during
the year 1886 are worthy the at
tention of those race leaders and
politicians who claim for their par
ticular people the future of the
United States. In the immigra
tion last year Germany led with
86,301 immigrants; England came
second, with 58,422, and Ireland
third, with 52,912. Of Swedes,
32,222 landed on our shores, while
13,916 Scots kept them company.
Italian immigration is becoming
important, 30,472 arriving at all
ports. Among other comers were
25,980 Russians, 13,858 Norwe
gians, 18,110 Hungarians and 17,
593 "Austrians. American nomen
clature of the next century is go
ing to be a study for philologists.
A German chemist has invent
ed a new kind of anaesthetic bul
let which he urges will, if brought
into general use, greatly diminish
the horrors of war. The bullet is
of brittle substance, breaking di
rectly when it comes in contact
with the objeot at which it is
aimed. It contains a powerful
antes the tic, producing instantane
ously complete insensibility, last
ing for twelve hours, which, ex
cept that the action of the heart
eontinuos, is not to be dis
tinguished from death. While in
this condition, the German chemist
points out, the bodies may be
packed in ambulance wagons and
carried off as prisoners. War, by
means of this humane invention,
will be reduced to a mere pastime,
and the nations may indeed beat
their swords into plowshares, and
their spears into pruning hooks.

Famous "Women.
Madame Trebelli, the greatest of
living contraltos who has traveled
extensively, in fact visited every
county and city of note in the world,
has just departed from the slope of
the Pacific, and often expressing the
greatest admiration for the beauty
and grandeur of our scenery and the
delightful mildness of our climate,
left the following written note as a
living expression of her opinion in
the hands of a Portland druggist, the
original of which can be seen on de
mand.
Pobtulkd, Or., April C, 1887.
Dear Mr. Wisdom : I have tried your
"Bobertine." and it civea me much
pleasure to say that it is excellent for
the complexion, being one of the best
articles of the kind I have ever used. Be
lieve me. touts sincerely.

If any further proof of the excel
lency of this article is required call on
Messrs. W.E. Dement & Co. of Asto
ria, Or., who, for the small sum of
fifty cents, will produce evidence that
will satisfy the most skeptical and
fastidious and give you a beautiful
picture card for the trouble of en
quiring. The oase of Cox vs. the Governor
Newell ia on trial today says the
Telegram of the 23rd, before Judge
Deady in the United States distriot
court Cox was captain of the Neio
ell at the time a collision ocoured at
Astoria with the steamship Oregon,
by which the smaller vessel was
damaeed. J. O. Trullinger who was
owner or the JXewell, discharged uox
immediately after the accident, for
carelessness, and some wages whioh
were due he retained as an offset to
the damages claimed to have been
caused by Cox's unskillful handling
of the vessel Cox, however, would
not accept such settlement and
brought suit in the United States
court for the wages due him at the
time of his dismissal, libeling the
boat meanwhile, pending final de
cision in the case. In the evidence
before the court the plaintiff en
deavored to show that he was in no
way responsible for the acoident, and
that the rudder was fouled by some
means when it occurred and the ves
sel was unmanagable.

LIVER REGULATOR
For all Diseases of the
Liver, Sidneys, Stomach and Spleen.
This purely vegetable pre
paration, now so celebrated as a
FamHy Medicine, originated in
the South in 1838. It acts
gently on the Bowel and
Kidney and corrects die
action ot the Lx ver, and is, there

medicine, whatever the sick
ness may prove to be. In all
common diseases it will, un
assisted by any other medi
cine, effect a speedy cure.
The Regulator is safe to administer in any
condition of the system, and under no circum
stances can It do harm. It will invigorate
like a glass of wine, but is no intoxicating bever
age to lead to intemperance: will promote di

I have been practicing medicine for twenty years,
and have never been able to put up x vegetable
compound that would, like Simmons Liver Regu

action, and at the same time aid (instead of weak
ening) the digestive and assimilative powers of the
system. L. M. Hihton, M. D. .Washington, Ark.

Have you ever noticed, says an ex
change, that when yon sit down to
play a game of pedro there will nearly
always be one fellow in the game who
won't bid, no matter how good his
hand is, bnt sits aronnd hoping to
save his jack or catch pedro, and

without running any risk? He sel

Well, our boom has brought plenty of
