It was said of a great American

don't you forget that the windows of

The present term of court bids fair
to be a quiet and uneventful one.
There is no criminal business, and
very little civil or "uncivil business.
The expense to the county will be
very little, which is fortunate for the
taxpayers.
It seems strange, says the Mercury,
that after our own government should
have given away so large a portion of
the federal domain to aid in building
four roads across the continent, they
should pass a law to give all the trade
of the country to a British railway.
At Alderbrook last Sunday Rev. O.
B. "Whitmore, pastor of the M. E.
church, baptized three new members
of the church, eight others in full
connection at the church here, and
one by letter, making twenty-nine
members received since last Septem
ber. The Telegram says that a Portland
girl waved her hand at a stranger and
in three days they were married.
Two days later the young girl waved
a flat-iron at her husband, and the
next evening he came home waving
a divorce. "What are the wild waves

The Oregonian says that the dis
tinction of being the oldest pioneer
in this section belongs to George T.
Allenj" o Cathlamet, who came to
this coast in 1831. But Alex. McKay,
of Pendleton, formerly of Astoria,
"came to this coast" by way of Port
Natal, in 1824.
The following "notis" was picked
up recently in the streets of Baker
City: "Taik Notis. Runned away, a
white calfs. His hind legs was black.
He was a she calfs. Anybody's who
doesn't bring her back pays five dol

Dick Marion expects to save his

runaway accident last week. A vet

Portland, looked at the leg, said it
had been treated just the same as if
he had been here, charged Richard

D. H. "Welch has been speeding his
boat, the Montesano, at Yaquina.
The Albany Herald of the 18th says:
"A race was made at Yaquina the oth-'
er day between .the Tressa May and
the Montesano. The race was from
Yaquina City to Newport, and both
boats arrived almost simultaneously,
the Montesano just enough ahead to
-ffia."
As a glittering example of concise
ness, the following comes from the
walls of a deserted shanty in the heart
of Daketa: "Fore miles fruiu a na
ber; sixteen miJes frnm a posteffis:
twenty-five miles frum a ralerode; a
hundred and atey frum timber; half
a mile frum water; God bless our
home. We're gone east to git a fresh
start."
The State took G02 cs salmon yes
terday. Six carloads went overland
yesterday, via the N. P. R. R. About
eight carloads is the daily average
smpment from here now. The War
wick Cattle and the Glenavon, now
loading, and the Yilldlta and Yark
and. to load, will, if is thought, take
me .kpgiish salmon shipments from
Astoria this season.
From Road Supervisor "Walker it is
learned that work is being done on
the road between here and J. G.
Nurnberg's between Olney and Neha
lera; there is also a force working on
the south side of Smith's Point.
There is a good road to the ferry
landing on the "Walluski, and if the
ferry boat at that point were raised
and put in working order it would be
a benefit to every one that lives or
has business in that section. As it is
now the road is no good to any one,
because of the uselessness of the
ferry boat.
The attention of The Astoriax is
called to the following utterance of
an eastern exchange: "The king of
salmon has been caught in a Stock
ton fish weir on the Penobscot. He
weighed forty-four and one-half
pounds." Walla Walla Union.
Pshaw; ho was only an infant prince
of the royal line of salmon. Sixty-five-pounders
are common here. Go

"Wednesday we saw twenty salmon
that would average -over fifty
pounds apiece taken on the Tele
phone lrom a boat off Tongue I'oint,
and one brought to Eagle Cliff
the day before weighed seventy-one
pounds.
This little breeze, wafted from the
high Sierras, tells of the turbulent
Bpirits that rule newspaperdom in
that mountain region. "If the editor
of the little bastard sheet yclept the
Sierra Reverberator will keep till next
week without salt, and if we can get
the law against cruelty to animals re
pealed, wo will eat him up. The ed
itor of that little bastard sheet shows
clearly in an article last week that his
soul is as small as a mustard seed.
His brains could be wrapped up in a
gun wad, and still leave room for his
moral principal and courtesy. Any

find us at our office, corner Main

"PYOMALEO.N AND GALATEA."
Next Mondav the popular and distin
guished French actress M'llo Rhea, will
appear at Ross' Opera house for one
night only in Gilbert's grand comedy
entitled "Pygmaleon and Galatea." The
Washington Post has this to say of MMle
Rhea: "Her manner is delicate and re
fined; her diction is purer and her voice,
without losing any of its remarkable
power, has grown more mellow and of
Greater range in the upper register. As
the beautiful Galatea in Gilbert's classic
comedy the charming actress was a reve
lation, in the first act -whioh she carried
gracefully and pleasantly, she unfolded
but little of her power, and that, in the
line of a charming ease and naturalness,
but as the piece progressed, she rose to
and even above the dramatic require
ments of scenes and situation. The
rausio of her voice, the fascination of her
manner, the studied emphasis that gave
point and humor, and her exhibition of
dramatic power and intensity carried the
audience by storm. To describe her
Galatea in detail would but faintly hint
at tho reality f conception and execu
tion. It was all that the most fastidious
could desire loving and tender, sacrific
ing and sorrowful, gay and gloomy.
Rhea was given a warm welcome here.
She has had many admirers in this oity,
and her friends welcomed her with an
enthusiasm which testified to the esteem
in whioh she has always been held in
"Washington both as an actress and a
woman.

Famous Women.
Madame Trebelli, the greatest of
living contraltos who has traveled
extensively, in fact visited every
county and city of note in the world,
has just departed from the slope of
the Pacific, and often expressing the
greatest admiration for the beauty
and grandeur of our scenery and the
delightful mildness of our climate,
left the following written note as a
living expression of her opinion in
the hands of a Portland druggist, the
original of which cun be seen on de

Dear Mr. Wisdem: I have tried your

Astonishing Success.
It is the duty of every person who
has used Boschee's GermawSyrup to
let its wonderful qualities be known
to their friends in curing Consump

Pneumonia, and in fact all throat
and lung diseases. No person can
use it without immediate relief. Three
doses will relieve any case, and wo
consider it the duty of all Druggists
to recommend it to the poor, dying
consumptive, at least to try one bottle,
as 80,000 dozen bottles were sold last
year, and no one case where it failed
was reported. Such a medioine as

A CARDINAL FOB THK C0AS1.
Washington, June 19. Cardinul Gib
bons, who is spending a few days in this
oity, says that ecclesiastical matters
would require him to visit the Pacific
slope some time in September or October
of this yeur. He will go via St. Paul,
Minneapolis and Portland, and will make
his head-quarters at San Francisco, there
to .remain probably six weeks. Cardinal
Gibbons will be the first Prince of the
Catholic church to visit California. In
this connection your correspondent is
Serimitea io biuuj mus it 13 generally un

Rome are of a confidential character
that, between now and the celebration of
the four hundreth centennial of the dis
covery of America, a second Cardinal
will be created, and the honor in this
case be conferred upon the Pacific slope.
The Pacific slope represents the early
zeal of the Catholio missionaries in
America. It is part, therefore, of the
plan of the Vatican that in celebrating
the four hundreth year of the discovery
of America (1892) that the distant prov

ecclesiastical honors.
