OF INTEREST TO LUMBEEMEN.
Timber owners on the Pacific
coast, in the operation of develop
ing their possessions and turning
them into money, will no doubt in
a great measure repeat the expe
rience of eastern men, but they
will, also, in some very important
respects, work under much more
advantageous circumstances than
those the pioneers in the business
of lumber making have been com
pelled to meet and many times
overcome. The early work of the
sawmills, even in the west, was
crude to a degree. Lumber was
not out it was butchered; and
while out of the slaughter there
came such choice lots of stock as
are hard to equal in these latter
days, the waste and useless de
struction were enormous. Indeed,
economy in sawing is of very re
cent introduction as a practical
measure. It is only within a -couple
of years or so since the timber
supply was acknowledged to be
perceptibly waning that band
saws have obtained a foothold, and
the practicability of thin blades
and nirrow kerfs has been fully
recognized. With the Pacific coast
operators, who have, as yet, cut
but a little way into their immense
Teserve of timber, all the advan
tages of recent achievements in
the science of lumber making are
theirs to realize. They are fortu
nate in finding economical machin
ery already perfected, and the
millions of dollars which it will
save over "older devices, will remain
to bless the owners of timber with
gains, instead pi going to everlast
ing waste in sawdust, of no value
or benefit to any one. It
is worthy of note that the mak
ers of lumber on the coast are be
coming aroused to the necessity of
using economical apparatus for
sawing, and experiments with band
mills have been going on for
some time. It has been a theory
with some that of the older lum
bermen of that section that the
timber growing there, and es
pecially that in the Puget Sound
region, required a- heavier and
stronger cutting instrument than
the modern band, andthe predic
tion has been freely made .that the
latter would utterly fail in making
those huge giants into merchantable
stock. But it appears, from tin
result of recent experiments that
these apprehensions of failure are
not to be justified, and it is now
asserted on the proof of actual
trial that the band-sawing of the
timber of Oregon and Washington
territory is as feasible as the man
ufacture bv the same means of
any other wood harder than pine.
There is a promising field for the
band saw in that country, where
the largest double circulars are
often unequal to the immense logs
presented to them, and it will no
doubt be furnished in size and ca
pacity adequate to meet the pecu
liar demands of that region. When
it is remembered that the adop
tion of the improved and economi
cal sawing machinery in use- now
in the east will "be equivalent to
adding a very considerable per
centage to the total of the timber
supply, the movement in this di
rection becomes ot significant in
terest to the entire lumber trade
of the country. lumberman.

Across the Cascades.
Albany, June 18. It is learned
that about July 1 a government
party, accompanied by several
hundred United States troops from
Vancouver, under command of
Capt. Davis, will be started across
the Cascade mountains to Camp
Polk. The party will go via Al
bany, or the Cascade & Willam
ette Valley or Lebanon wagon
road. The train will contain
eighty or ninety pack horses, and
several heavily laden wagon. It
is proposed to investigate the
glaciers and geological formation
in the vicinity of the Three Sis
ters, and obtain a topographical
survey of that region for scientific
purposes, as well as to give drill
to the men. W. G. Steel, of Port
land, who was engaged in the
Crater lake survey and who will
be one of tho leaders of the party,
has already written to ascertain in
formation concerning the feasibil
ity of the route. Snow on the
pass in the Cascades has about
disappeared, and the party will
find no difficulty in crossing.

Salem, June 19. Dr. G. II.
Davis, a physician of Champoeg,
eighteen miles below fealem, was
arrested last night for abortion,
alleged to have been committed
some davs since on tho person of
tho daughter of Wm. Yenren, a
prominent fanner living near
Champoeg. The doctor himself is
alleged to be the seducer of ihe
victim of the abortion. The voting
woman is in a very precarious con
dition, and it is doubtful if she re-
recovers. Dr. Davis is now in jail
here. The grand jury is '"n session,
and if the facts warrant, an indict
ment against him will be found.

New York, June 19. With
reterence to the proposition to
surrender the rebel battle-flags,
Gov. Pennoyer, of Oregon, tele
graphed to the World as follews:
"If it was a handsome thing to do
for Gen. Grant on April 7, 1S65,
upon the surrender of Lee, to
allow him to retain his sword, it
certainly would be a handsome
thing to allow the flags captured
to be returned. In my judgment
it would have been magnanimous
on the part of the Grand Army
organ'zatiou to have first suggest
ed such action."
