OREGON: SUNDAY JUNE 19. 18S7 Raitroad whispers are fre quently heard in these parts now adays, but whether or not they emanate from railroad authorities is something "no fellow can find out." There is 'always a certain degree of mystery about the -anonymous whispers, however, and perhaps the problem will not admit of further solutionat present. The Omaha Herald of June 5 claims the largest single edition is sued by any newspaper in the United States. It is filled with facts and statistics about Nebraska, Omaha and cities near by. The paper comprises 48 pages, with more than one-half covered by ad vertisements. One copy of the paper weighs 12A- ounces. Some oxe has asked the Baker City Democrat what is the salary of the governor of Oregon, to gether with the fees of the office. The salary of the governor of Ore-n-on is 1,500 per year, and besides this he is paid $200 per year as ohairman of the board of visitors to the penitentiary, and $100 per year as chairman of the board of asylum commissioners. This makes 1,800 in all, and this is the full amount the governor is allowed from the state. There are a num ber of men in Oregon who receive larger salaries than the governor of the state. Tub American is the name of a new publication at San Francisco which takes for its text the idea that "the Democratic and Repub lican parties are dead; that both factions are incorrigibly corrupt, and that the hope of the nation is in a broad American party, which shall include the best elements alike of our native-born and for eign population." In our opinion the hope of this nation is in education, clear perception of pub lic and private rights, and upon the perpetuation of a policy of protection to our best principles and interests, with all that that in cludes. A London journal recently of fered a prize of 2 2s. for a rea sonable solution of "What be comes of the Dins?" The follow ing reply captured the prize: "A surface of ten miles square con tains 310,000,000 square yards. Assnme this as the area of Lon don. To include the area of floor surface in houses, it may safely be trebled, say 1,000,000,000 square yards. If every five square yards contained one stray pin, who would be aware of it? Here, then, we have in London alone a recep tacle for 200,OO0,Q00 of stray pins unperceived by anybody. The answer, therefore, is that thousands of millions of lost pins can be, and are, scattered about the land un noticed. Half of these, being out of doors, are gradually destroyed by ru3t; the other half pass out of doors by degrees." Tiiere are indications that in the next general election the smaller parties will act in such a way as to worry the managers of the two great political parties. This is particularly the case in New York, which is still a pivotal state, and the most important factor in all political calculations. The prohibitionists are thoroughly dissatisfied with the course of both of the great parties in that state in reference to the liquor question." They are fully determined to run candidates of their own, and they be lieve that they will poll a much larger vote than at the last elec tion in the sfate. Still more im portant than the attitude of the prohibitionists is that of the labor party. - There is some probability that the labor men will run a pres idential candidate of their own next year. They are greatly .encouraged by the large vote polled for George in the mayoralty canvass last year, and they my4take the step of present ing a presidential candidate as a' means of consolidating the labor vote. The entrance of this factor in thn political field would compli cate very much the calculations of the older political managers. The prohibitionist vote may be approx imately estimated upon the basis of the votes of the last few years, and the managers of the older par ties have learned to make allow ances for it. With the labor vote the case is different. Nobody knows what its size will be, and it is not known with any approach to definiteness what proportion of it will be drawn from each of the old parties. It is probable, However, that if the labor men decide to show their strength the vote polled will be a large one large enough, per haps, to determine the result of the election, at least in New Yore state. My brother also was very low with Ma larial Fever and Jaundice, but was cured bv timely use of this medicine. Am satfsfied Electric Bitters saved his life." Mr. D. I.
