Burlington & Quinoy railroad, has been receiv ing a salary of "'-000 a year. Tt is further reported that as general manager of the Union Pacific rail road he has signed a contract for five vears at an annual compensa t it 11 of VoO.OOO a year. These iig i:s's to posne may appear to he 'noriiiously !e'ond the ability of any m:tii to return an equivalent in time or work. To others the larger of these sums will seem small when the responsibility of the position is considered. It is an affair of daily occurrence, so common that jio attention is paid to it, for an employe to rcceire a wjiary of 1.000 :s year for super iii' riming the mamigoment of a buM-it's- vhoe airgregijt for the v.-r may fail below $20,000. There are many men who re -eive 2,:). a year for directing a busi ness uine voluuse does not in the cous-c of a year reacli 1:0,000. Mr. Putter, as the executive head of the I'uioj Pacific tai'road, will b.- tl.f dif-et representative of a c-rp 1 irioti ,wi'ose capital stock i;i!i- in. into ti.e millions of dol lars. An insignificant per cent, of tS'i.- enormous aggregate pry s S.i salary of ' 50,000 a 3ear. If he has the ability to handle millions of doihii'a in such a way that a satis factory profit is returned to the stockholder then his salary is small in compaiison with that of another olticcr who in controlling the same business fails to make the receipts overbalance the ex penses. Jt is from tiiis standpoint that the services of the great rail road manager must be measured. There are very few men capable of grasping the details of a large bus iness, and they are therefore in a position to command large compen sations. At the tame time the stockholders of the corporation are individually paying no more lor the services of Mr. Potter than some vastly smaller business house or factory is paying its superin tendent who receives a salary of S'2,000 a year. There are thbsc" vl o contend that no man can earn ."0, 000 a year by honest work. Th.s would be true if the work was con fined to digging ditches or holdinga plow. There are thousands who can do ordinary work, and stand road' to do it for day laborers' wages. There are very Tew men endowed by nature with the genius of di recting the affairs of an immense concern successfully. Herein lies the difference. Kossuth Jji Old Aire. Louis Kossuth, the venerable Hungarian patriot, sas in a late letter: "The burden of more than eighty four years weighs down my infirm shouldets. Under this weight the body is deadened, the soul grows blunted, life becomes a .state of mere barren vegetating. Man feels then like some time worn, mouldering ruin, which no longer assorts with the world of the living-. Tlioiili Shaken Life a Leaf Ii the most trivial causes, weak nerves are easily susceptible of invigcralioii, a teim which also imports, in this instance, quietude. The ncnous have but to use llostettei ,Stomacli Bitters systematically to overcome that tuper-sensitiveness of the human vuisornmi, hich is subversive of all bodily comfort anil mental tranqinlitv. and which reacts most hurtfullj upon the system. Thedtflleut. umleilaiin: this, as v.ell a many other ailments, is imnerfect assimila tion, no less than Incomplete digestion of tue loon, in tneaiscnnrgeor uotii the ill estie and assimilative functions, the Bit ters are the most potent, the most reliable auxiliary. As the. bony regains vigor and legulamy by itsaid, the brain and nervous system are also benefited. Persons subject to the influence of malaria, dyspeptic and rheumatic invalids, and ner&ons whose kid neys are inactive, should, also, use the Bit ters. The first cremation on the Pa cific coast was performed in the new crematory at Los Angeles, Cal., last Friday. For cleansing and healing foul and in- uolent L leers, bores ami Abscssses and removing the bad odors arising therc- I iroin, and for sloughing, contused and lacerated v.nnmds. Daruj'S Prophylac lie riuiu is uuenuaiieu. "I have used Darbys Prophylactic Fluid m hospital and private practice for ten years and know of nothing bet ter for sloughing contused and lacer ated wounds, foul and indolent ulcers and as a disinfectant." J. F. Heustis, Professor ifobile Med. College. OOUEAGE. There is a proneness to look only to openly demonstrated her oisw for courage, and never to grant its existence elsewhere. Courage, however, is not essen tially a matter of noise and bom bast, but more often of the ex tremest quiet. The man, who, in the midst of poverty and privation, toils unflinchingly and uncomplain ingly foi the sustenance of his family, in full consciousness of the fact that he can never rise supeior to his misfortunes, is a man of courage. The man who, entrusted with vast sums of gold, which he might, if he would, make his own, but who faithfully deals back to each creditor his due lie is a man of courage. The man who has views which are in advance of his age, and with them, sufficient daring to coolly express and calmly discuss them he, also, has cour age; but the bravest man of all the one who has the best and most unimpeachable right and claim of courage, is the man, who, to shield and protect others, accepts open insult and submits unmurmuringly to open censure, criticicism and indignity. This is harder than heading an army, harder than wearing a royal crown, harder than preaching truth and right to a generation of fools. In all rav life I have known of but one such man; and although 3 never have met him, I revere him as a god; and yet, the world would question my sanity if I wrote his name where it belongs, high up in the list of heroes. Georre tiond in J orlh American Review. Professor D wight of Columbia, says of Ilenry George's theery: "Without private property in land no man can have an assured birth place or burial-place. No tree can be planted that-'lie can call his own, nor can any dwelling be erected that will give him assured shelter. When baby was sick, wo gave her Castoria, When shs was a Child she cried for Castoria, When sho became Miss, she clung to Castoria, When shslia J Children, she gavu them Castorb '"WV rv Y Of the good things of VWAN, this life are sorrowful ly let alone on account of Dyspepsia.
