Ctl MU gaUu gtotfau. ASTOBIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY. ..JUNE 8, 1S87 THE STRUGGLE FOR A PRESID EN TIAL NOMINATION. The Ohio man is in the field for a nomination to the presidency. He has always been a lucky man in politics. Thurman was ten dered tho office of interstate com missioner, but declined. John Sherman has placed himself on the track for a presidential nomination from the Republican party. The Ohio man is strong in politics. "Witness the good for tune of Hayes, Garfield, Grant, and in earlier times, Harrison. It is often said that Virginia is the mother of presidents. But Ohio bids fair to take the lead. Vir ginia cradled Washington, Jeffer son, Monroe, Madison and later still Tyler. As the record is made up, she is one ahead of Ohio, al though Tyler was an aooident and not a fortunate one by any means. If Sherman should get the Repub lican nomination and should be elected, Ohio -would be even in the presidential race. Stranger" things have happened than that John Sherman should re ceive the next presidential nomi nation. Sherman is an adroit pol itician, and he has the advantage of a very good political record. The additional advantage is that his brother, Gen. W. T. Sherman, a nominal Democrat, who has de clared over and oyer again that he would not accept any political nomination, is working quietly for John. The former has great in fluence. He has abundant leisure. Moreover, he has found an accept able place. He did not like Wash ington or St. Louis. But he likes New York, the headquarters of politicians. Suppose this influ ence extends far enough to carry New York in the next national Republican convention? and that John Sherman, by virtue of his personal influence, can carry Ohio, the chances then for his nomina tion would be good. This is the possible new phase of oolitics. It is not assumed that Blaine's political noso is to be put out of joint, only that he has a form idable rival in Sherman, who has loomed up in Ohio and elsewhere, and is to make a determined effort for the nomination. He was the candidate seven years ago at Chi cago when Garfield received the nomination. The latter said: "What will Sherman think of me?' ' Garfield had worked long and late for Sherman and had not been successful. The latter for some reason would not take the highest office in the cabinet under Gar field. If the nomination were to be made to-day by the Republi cans, Blaine would almost certain ly win. No one can tell what change may be wrought in the next few months. But to-day there are just two Republican candidates prominent in the field. These are Blaine and Sherman. The Ohio man haB the tradition of luck on his side, and the Maine man has the reputation of an inde fatigable worker. Other candi dates may loom up in the Repub lican field. The "dark horse" is sametimes brought in as the dis turbing element. At this date the Democrats have no very prominent candidate, or, rather, they have not brought for ward any one who attracts much attention, unless it may be Presi dent Cleveland. There is Randall of Pennsylvania, Carlisle $Ke tucky, and Hoadly of. Ohio, who has become a citizen of New York. At present the ex-governor does not appear to be aiming higher than & seat in the cabinet, which would fit him just about as well as a citizen of New York as of Ohio. It does not appear that ex-governor Hoadly in going to New York ostensibly to practice law, is going out of politics. In short, he appears to be much inclined to kindle a fresh fire in the political furnace. The ex-governor is going to "stand by Cleveland, and the natural inference is that the latter is going to stand by Hoadly. The steamer Tfmbria has broken the record between Queenstown and Sandv Hook. She left Liver pool at 2 o'clook in the afternoon of May 28th, passed out of Queens town harbor at 1:04 o'clock May 29th, anchored off bar Sandy Hook at 12:43 last Monday after noon, thus making the run from Queenstown in six days, four hours and two minutes. The weather was usually favorable. TheJZtru- via made the best record hereto fore in six days five hours and thirty-six minutes. France appropriates $1,627,500 a year in maintaining vast horse breeding establishments chiefly to recruit her army horse. This sum was reduced last year to $1,348, 600 by the hire of stallions. For the same purpose Austria-Hungary spends $1,000,000 a vear and Prussia spends $400,000 on the royal breeding establishments, be sides which there are fifteen other depots maintained at a correspond ing cost. Ex-Gov. Hoadly writes that he "cannot consent" to the use of his name as a candidate for the va cancy on the supreme bench, and expresses his hope and belief that "the appointment will go south, to some Democratic lawyer who be lieves that the constitution is in writing and means what it says."
