ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY..!?........ Z. MAY 31. 1887
It is said that there are lots
enough staked out in southern
California to provide for the entire
population of the city of New
York apportioned at the rate of
three persons to the lot. It would
take more than the combined cap
ital of all the banks of New York
to buy up' these lots. They have
a story down there about lumber,
which illustrates the craze. It is
said that a gentleman went to
a lumber dealer, and desired
enough lumber to build a house.
He was looked upon with compas
sion by the dealer, who said to
him that there was no lumber for
sale. When he asked for an ex
planation, the dealer replied to him
as if he had compassion for his ig
norance, that "the lumber was all
sold for stakes for town lots."

Madame Trebelli, the greatest of
living contraltos who has traveled
extensively, in fact visited every
county and city of note in the world,
has just departed from the slope of
the Pacific, and often expressing the
greatest admiration for the beauty
and grandeur of our scenery and the
delightful mildness of our olimate,
left the following written note as a
living expression of her opinion in
the hands of a Portland druggist, the
original of which can be seen on de
mand. Poetland, Or., April 6, 1887.
Dear Mr. Wisdem: J have tried vonr

Their Business Booming.
Probably no one thing has caused
such a general revival of trade at W. E.
Dement & Co.'s Drug Store as their giv
ing away to their customers of so many
free trial bottles of Dr. King's New Dis
covery for Consumption. Their trade
is simply enormous in this very valu
able article from the fact that it always
cures and never disappoints. Coughs.
Colds, Asthma, Bronchitis, Croup, and
all throat and lung diseases quickly
cured. You can test it before buying
by getting a trial bottle free, large
size Si. Every bottle warranted.
