The 01aa-Ha-GaeL
New York; May 19. The Mail
and Express says: The Clan-na-Gael
society, which numbers
among its members two United
States senators, the governors of
several states, mayors by tho dozen,
as well as congressmen ofnational
importance, is completely dis
rupted and the fight among classes
has become so bitter that certain
members have been charged with
sellincr the secrets of the order to
the British government, which hfis
bee'h the means of supplying in
formation to the London Times.
The Clan-na-Gael society was.
formed in the United States after
the Abarline revolution in Ire
land during the spring of 1867.
A camp was organized in every city
of the United States and every
town of consequence. Brooklyn
has nearly a dozen cumps, with
members as high as seven and
eight hundred. New York has
more. Philadelphia follows next,
then Chicago, St. Louis, Pitts
bug, Troy, Buffalo, Albany, San
Francisco, New Jlaven, Boston,
Lowell, Providence, Scranton and
Hoosick Falls. Powderly was one
of the chiefs when mayor of Scran
toD. Tho society is oath- bound
and the object is to free Ireland.
To day the society is not only
split in halves, but one of the
members, said to reside in New
Haven, is charged with appropri
ating 840,000 from the. revolution
ary funds, and other members of
tho supreme board are taxed with
living on assessments drawn from
the members. Open warfaie has
been instituted botween tho lead
ers, and the camps are divided into
almost equal factions, the seceders
taking with them the name of
Clan-na-Gael, the camps remaining
in the original order adopting an
other name.
