A TOUOHY WOHAH.
The importance of breaking
news gently in this section of the
country, says n exchange, was
well illustrated here a few days
ago when Dave Kellyx a new com
er went up to inform Mrs. Pike
Baldwin that she was a widow.
Pike had been up tho creqk with
some of the boys, and the boat be
coming unmanageable in the high
water, he and the others had been
thrown out. All got ashore ex
cept Pike, but it was a haid job.
The current was very swift, and it
is thought that he probably was
thrown against a rock and injured.
Dave Kelly came along just as the
boys were picking themselves out
of the water, and, as they wero too
exhausted to do more than crawl
to their cabins, ho got the job of
conveying the news to Mrs. Bald
win, a frontier lady who has some
thing of a record. On approach
ing the house Dave thought long
and earnestly on the best way of
communicating the information,
and at length came to the conclu
sion that the direct method was
preferable to any other. He there
fore stepped up briskly, and see
ing Mrs. Baldwin at the door of
the cabin said:
"I am sorry to say, Mrs. Bald
win, that Pike was drownnd this
morning up the creek."
"Drownod?" she said, with a curl
of her lip.
"Yes, ma'am," replied Dave,
who already began to fool uncom
fortable. "You're a liar!" she said, em
phatically. "Pike can swim like a
fish, and you can't drown a fish,
nor Pike neither. So go 'long
now, or I'll hit you!"
"But, Mrs. Baldwin "
"But nothing. You go now, or
I'll drown you in a shotgun. Pike
can't be drowned. Who sont yon
here with that lie?"
"Tho boys on Stoner's ranch.
They were all with Pike iri a boat,
and the boat upsot and they all
20t ashore except Pike. Ho was
drowned and "
Just then a mop that was stand
ing near the door fell on Dave's
head, and he sank to tho ground,
while Mrs. Baldwin, over him,
yelled:"
"Didn't I teli yu not to say
that again? You git out of thi
now, before I use an iron on -lit.
Pike's all right. If I thought he
could bo drowned I'd never it ivc
put up with him this long. You
go and tell tho boys down at
Stoner's tov eat some hay. My
Pike's a better man thtn any of
them. When there's any drown
ing to be done I'll bet von 5 ih;it
some of them pan-handle pilgrims
will vo to oak before lw duos.
Are you going to climb?"
Dave made off on a run, with
the widow after him, and he did
not stop until he had reaohed the
ranch, where some of the boys had
already taken Pike's remains, they
having been found down the
stream a ways. After telling his
story, the crowd listening intently,
Dave was told by old man Loftus
to s:o off somewhere and die.
"Don't you know any better than
that, you idiot?" he said, showing
some warmth near the collar.
"There's only one way to inform a
widow of the death of her hus
band, and that is to take his body
along with 3Tou. Probably you
don't remember how "VCasatch
Charlie got that handsome Jaw on
him. He went to tell a voinan
on the Sawtooth range that her
husband had been killed in a fist
fight. The woman was insulted,
and having a six-shooter handy,
and Charlie being very mournful
and persistent, she let him have it
in the jaw. He got away, but he
has a poor jaw now. There was
another man who learned some
thing, I guess. He lived in Idaho,
and he took a dead man homo in
his wagon. Thinking to break
the news gently, he said:"
'"Where is your husband?'
'He's down in the timber cut
ting firewood.'
'No, ho ain't.'
'Well, he's over to Boget's,
playing cards.'
'Ko, he ain't, neither.'
'Look here, stranger,' said the
woman, drawing a 45-caliber re
volver, 'just you produce the old
man now, mighty quick, or I'll
make a lead miue ouc of you!'
"Under those trying circum
stances, the poor fool had to show
what he had in the "box, and, of
course, the .woman killed' him.
She said she knew some terrible!
toush men, but that fellow -was!
the first one who would kill a
womau's husband and then gct,to
her house and call her a liar. She
was acquitted, too." "
"Now, the thing to do with
Pike, here, fa to wait until dark
and then carry him over to the
house and leave him there unbe
knownst. Some women are mighty
touchy, r.nd it's foolish to rile 'em
up. Just you leave Pike over
there, and after a little sho'Il come
down and want to know all about
it. Then ycu can tell her that he
was drowned, or that a mountain
fell on him, just as you please.
From what 1 know of life and
death out here, I should bo in
clined to take the mountain story."
The old man's advice was fol
lowed, and the widow was not
onlv convinced of Pike's death,
but she took a mournful satisfac-1
tion in the reflection that ho bad
not been drowned.
