M. Lijner, an Austrian meteor
olegist, claims to havo ascertained,
after careful investigation, that the
moon has an influence on a mag
netized needle, varying with its
phases and its declinations
The phenomenon is said to he
more prominently noticeable when
the moon is near the earth, and to
bo very marked when sho is pass
ing from the full to her first or
second quarter." The disturbances
are found to be at their maximum
when the moon is in the plane of
the equator, and greater during
the southern than it is during the
northern,decliuation.
A oomic actor was much ad
dicted to drink. He -was on the
road and billed to appear in a
small town. "When he came out
on the stage he was so drunk that
the, audience hissed him. Steady
ing himself on the scenery the
actor said: "Ladihh and shentle
mens! When an artist of my
sthunding conshents to appear at
all in such a little one.horsh town
he musht either be drunksh or
crazshy. I prefer to be consid
ered an inebriate." The audience
roared and fonrave him.

A large corps of well equipped
engineers, outfitted in fine style,
are now surveying a line between

Montana. Speculation is divided
as to whether they are in the em

Central Combination, Northern
Pacific allied lines, Union Pacific
branch system or Chicago &
Northwestern, which line is com
