Toronto, M83'.18.--The incur-'
sion or U'-Brien, tne insn agitator, Hang him!" "Lansdowne for
seems to have changed the whole j everj O'Brien, however, was
lace ot Uanadian politics, and it is
thought it will have an important
bearing on the future of parties
and politics in the dominion, The
Catholics who spoke regretfully in
regard to the Fenian invasion
of twentv years ago, don't speak
so now. Orangemen who talked
in a determined manner about
O'Brien's invasion, say that if he

witn ins me. some uransemen
seem to feel that they have com
mitted a blunder, not in having at
tacked the speaker and disturbed
the meeting, but in not having
done so half well enough.
As evidence that the Orange
men are not solid against O'Brien'
a letter from an Orangeman, in
which O'Brien is upheld and the
action of Lansdowne denounced,
was furnished for publication to
day by O'Brien with the remark:
"Look at that, boys. The most
powerful indictment that has yet
becu drawn up against Lansdowne
and his rowdy defenders, and the
most complete vindication of my
action in this matter.
At half-past1!! o'clock president
J. B. Mulligan of the local branch
of the National League, called at
the hotel and asked O'Brien to go
out and have a walk. D. P. Ca
liill and Dennis Kilbride, evicted
tenants, and J. X. Wall, special
correspondent of the Now York
Tribune, were present, and sug
gested that it would not be pru
dent to venture out, as darkness
had fallen and a crowd of about
200 rowdies liadj gathered around
the hotel, hissing and groaning.
O'Brien, however, persisted iir go
ing. The crowdgrew in numbers and
turbulence, and surged up to the
very spot where O'Brien and oth
ers were standing. They groaned
and hissed into O'Brien's face with
cries of "Away, away, traitor!"
"Down with the dynamiter!" and
"bod save the queen!" A not
seemed imminent, as the Orange
men were armed with stout sticks,
lust as they were at the meeting
in Queen's park.
They came up to O'Brien as he
strode along York street and
jostled against him, making sev
eral attempts to strike him on the
head with their sticks. He dodged
their blows, however, as his friends
rallied around him, but they were
as one to fifty. Two policemen
stood near, but made no effort fo
disperse the mob-
As the party turned into Bay
street, Cahill had his hat knocked
off bT a stone. Now the- Orange
men began their real attaek, for
Bay street offered a good oppor
tunity, being almost covered with
broken bricks and cobble stones.
O'Brien had on a tall hat, which J
furnished a good target. Wall
was on his right, and Kilbride and
Mulligan "wore on his loft.
"Look out, O'Brien," shouted
Wall. "Stones are coining. It's
Belfast over again."
"It's all right," replied O'Biien.
"It would be better for Lansdowne
if they would let us alone."
As he spoke, a volley of bricks
and cobble stones came flying from
the Orangemen, grazing their
heads, but knogkinglhe plastering
off the adjacent walls. Shouts of
"To hell with the pope!" ".Kill .the
traitor!" and so on, rose high above
the din. The O'Brien party were
still on the sidewalk, and the Or
angemen were thronging the street.
D. T. Kellogg, a reporter of the
New York 'Sim, now rushed be
hind O'Brien, and was about to
warn him, when a stone struck
O'Bren's hat and knocked it off.
O'Brien stooped his head, and
Wall, who was standing by his
side, turned his head to look in
the direction whence. the missiles
came,' when a huge stone struck
him on the head and turned him
heels over head. He was carried
to a drugstore, where his wound
was dressed.
O'Brien attempted to take ref
uge in Sharpe's laundry, and fail
ing in that rushed into a bicycle
store adjoining. A volley of stones
shattered the windows and the
mob burst into the store, acting
like demons, and showered mis
siles in the direction in which
O'Brien was. Some ladies and
old women screamed and fainted,
while the mob tumbled pell mell
over the machines, smashing them .
one against another in savage fury,
anjij cries of, "Kill the traitors!":
safely led away by an officer, and
reached his hotel in sately. Ualull
was knocked t down and received
two cuts, andtfiiore than a score of
other persons were injured, rjie
mob now seemed satiated.
Treasurer Tufy, of the local
branch of the league, sent the fol
lowing telegram to the leaders of
the league in New Yor.t and Chi Chi
caeo: "O'Brien has beer, mobbed
in the streets of Toronto by Qr
angemon. J. N. Wall, of the New
York Tribune, was seriously
wounded."
0Brien said to an associated
press representative: ''Lansdowne
has now done his worst. His po
licemen absolutely surrendered. us
to the mob. and had we not taken I
refuge in a bicycle shopwe would j
have been killed.
O'Brien will speak in Ottawa
to-morrow, and in Kingstown Fri
day. O'Brien spent the day in
visiting several Catholic institu
tions in this city. He declares
to-night that he will certainly go
to St Catherines, and that the
more the Orangemen oppose him
the longer he will stav in Canada.
