LAUGHING MATTEES.
A gentleman residing on Abeer- J
deen street was, until Friday last,
says an exchange, mclined to favor
female suffrage. His wife had
prudently delayed moving until
after the first, so as to t.ke advan
tage of the fall of rents. The
house to which they moved had
a tremendously steep flight of
stairs and an oil-clothed hall. The
wife had the stairs scrubbed down,
and left the soap on "the top step.
Her husband was up stairs, with a
basketful of clothespins in one
hand and a clock under the other
arm; when his wife who was down
stairs, saw a mouse, and shaking
her skirts madly, bounded up on
the table, let off a series of shrill
shrieks beginning on high ZZZ
above the clef. ITer husband
thinking the house was on fire, at
the very least, started to run to
her rescue, and stepping on the
piece of soag that she had so
thoughtfully left on the stairs,'sat
down vehementl' at the top of the
flight, and slid down with the
speed of thought. Fire flew from
his false teeth as he hit the edge
of each step; volleys of clothes
pins were discharged in the air,
and fell rattling and and rebound
ing on the oil-cloth, and the clock
shed its inwards over the universe.
The injured husband had little
time for reflection when he reached
the polished oil-cloth of the hall
and shot across it with scarcely
diminished velocity, literally mak
ing the oil-cloth and the seat of
his pantaloons smoke with friction,
and finally bringing up against the
door with a violence which 'threat
ened lo burst the side of the house.
The fearful concussion startled his
wife, who turned a back 2omer.nuit
from the table into a tub of soap
suds, in which she was so tightly
wedged that she had to throw a
handspring and canter on all fours,
like a turtle, with a tub on her
back and cataracts of suds inun
dating her. Meanwhile, the hired
woman fell off the step ladder with
a crash like a pile driver, and
jarred down most of the plaster
cornice. Whqn the man's wife
had sloughed her tub, she saun
tered calmly into the hall and
remarked, "Well, men are the
clumsiest and the hall ha3 jusr
been washed, too." Her busbii d
did not say much, but he tho irit
a good deal; and now he shj-,
just let Susan B. Anthony come
and lecture here again, and if no

he will, so help him Jasper Packle

The Session Laws.
Salem, May 16 --The state
printer finished printing the ses.;
sion laws to-day, five days before
the expiration of the time allowed
by law, and they were delivered to
the binder this afternoon. The
laws make a volume of 450 pages,
and the typographical work is ex
cellent throughout. From 1859
until 1878 the state printer was
required to bind tho laws within
ninety da'S after adjournment of
the legislature, but since loYo the
binding has been under the con
trol of tho secretary of state, no
time being prescribed within which
it should be completed. To meet
a general wish that the laws shall
be ready for distribution by the
time when thoy take effect, .all
other state work has been laid
aside at the bindery, and the bind
ing of the laws has already begun.
Secretary McBride says he expects
to deliver a copy to every circuit
and county court by May 21st,
nnd will distribute the remaining
copies every few days, as fast as
they are bound. The public offi
cers will be supplied before any
copies will be sold to private per
sons. Tho senate journal index
will be printed this week, and
the printing of the houso journal
will then be begun.
