The fact that Sidney Dillon was
one of the purchasers of the
"Wheeling & Erie railroad some
days ago again calls attention to a
financier who has had an interest
ing career. He is-one of the most
popular of the moneyed powers of
this country. He traces his gene
alogy back to the Huguenots, if
that is a matter of any particular
importance in these days ol indif
ference to the isms of sects. Some
of his ancestors were Irish, but
none of them happened to be
kings in the old ilays when the
harp of Erin shed the soul of music
in Tara's halls. Sidney Dillon is
tall, well built, with snow white
hair and whiskers; being now well
advanced in years. He used to be
a water boy on the Mohawk &
Hudson railroad, and worked for
81 a week. In after j'ears he
rolled up a fortune of 15,000,000,
but he lost heavy in the deprecia
tion in the value of Union Pacific
railroad stock. After working in
dustriously as a boy, carrying a
water pail to the brawuy laborers
on the railroad for a number of
years and carefully saving his
money, as so few do, he was able
to buy a horse and cart, and then
he carried water and sand for the
railroad. " He was brought up in
tho humblest circumstances in the
village of Northern New Fork
where he was born, a'nd seeing the
wealth and ease of tho largo farm
ers in his native place he was filled
with a desire to emulate their com
fortable prosperity, and not only
that but to far outshine them in
measures of gold. He wot iced
night and da', he lived frugally;
he was a genial fanatic, as bent on
conquering the avenues of wealth
as Peter the Hermit was on de
spoiling the infidels of the Holy
Land. He was all energy and
enterprise, never letting a
chance slip whereby his savings
might be augmented. In a
few years he found himself able to
hire or buy a number of horses and
carts, and then he struck out in
larger enterprises. He gradually
secured railroad contracts, which
proved very remunerative, and in
his thirtieth year, when he married
a very estimable lady of Amherst,
Mass., he was in prosperous cir
custances. This lady greatly aidei
him by the influence of a ver . mi
perior nature; his domestic 1 fe
was at once a source of moral
strength and of encouraging stim
ulus. "When he came to New
York he devoted himself to rail
road contracts; he built the Fourth
avenue improvement tunnel, at a
cost of mi'lions of dollars. He
had previously, however, super
intended the building of the Union
Pacific railroad, and in 18G9 had
assisted at the laying of tho last
rail. His emoluments from this
work had laid a broader founda
tion for a successful career in New
York. Ho was at one time presi
dent of the Union Pacific and was
succeeded by Charles Francis
Adams. He has been a director
of Union Pacific, Pacific Mail,
Western Union, Missouri Kansas
& Texas,Delaware, Lackawauna
and "Western, Texas Pacific, Man
hattan Elevated and the Mercan
tile Trust Company. At one time
he had registered in his own name
45,000 shares of Union Pacific,
15,000 of Western Union and 10,
000 of Lackawanna, not to men
tion his holdings of other stocks.
Ho has done valuable set vice for
Jay Gould, especially in connec
tion with the Union f acihoj years
ago, and the "Little Magician"
stands by him to-day, though Mr.
Dillon is not so powerful finan
cially asin former times. Mr.
Dillon's career, nevertheless, illus
trates the amazing possibilities
open to the poorest in the country.
SAFE, SURE, AND SPEEDY.
No external remedy ever yet de
vised has so fully and unquestion
ably - met these three prime condi
tions as successfully as Allcock's
Eoeous Plasters. " They are safe
because they contain no deleterious
drugs and are maunfactured upon
scientific principles of medicine.
They are sure because nothing goes
into, them except ingredients which
are exactly adapted to the purposes
for which a.plaster is required. They
are speedy in their action because
their medicinal qualitiesgo right to
their work of relieving pain and re
storing the natural and healthy per
formance of the functions of muscles,
nerves, and skin.

"Want -to Save tho Lands.
Washington, Mav 14. The!
assistant attorney-general' forthe
interior department has fixed
June 13 for argument of the ques
tion that was brought up three
years ago before the general fand
office as to whether the Northern
Pacific road possessed a grantof
land from the head of Puget sound,
at Tacoma, down to Portland, Or
egon. The granting act and the
'charter provided for the building
of a line to 1 uget bound, with a
branch down the Columbia river
to Portland. On both these lines
grants were "iven, but the toad
was built from Puget sound to
Portland also, and a question has
arisen whether any land was
granted to the road for this line.
The distance is about 150 miles,
and the land involved aggregates
about 2,500,000 acres. Tho over
lapping of the grant aldng the
Cascade branch, which is almost at
right angles with the Tacoma
branch, takes perhaps 1,500
000 acres out of the contro
versy. An official of the
Northern Pacific, who was here
last winter, stated that the
Cascade branch and the Tacoma
division would be a direct route
to " Portland, when built, and
that it would bo a good many
years before the Columbia river
branch would be constructed, and
he doubted, even if it were neces
sary to save the granton that line,
if it would be built. As a conse
quence the road is very desirous
of saving the lands along tho line
from Tacoma, through Kalama to
Portland, as they are very valu
able and will form a valuable
property, approaching as they do
so near the coast.
