A Hatter of News.
If a reader of current newspa
pers nave access to a nie 01 Amer
ican newspapers of the last century,
it will be found interesting to
compare the news therein with
the news of to-day. The world
beltinjr teleerrarih has, of course,
I made each morning's paper a mir
f ror in which is reflected the world's
, history for the preceding twenty
four hours.. But the modern dif
1 ference in thejiews is not referable
entirely to this greater promptness
in its presentation. The press and
all the news-gathering agencies
forage for material in fields that
were not sought a hundred years
ago. The percentage of crime,
scandal and indecency in the con
duct of persons was fairly large
then, but it was not treated as
news, to which the press subordin
ated all other things. If men
tioned at all these things were
dismissed, with a mere reference.
The press was devoted more to
the cultivation of literary taste, to
discussions of statesmen and their
craft in an enlightening spirit, and
not in that of fault finding for po
litical effect. The discoveries of
new lands, the extension of com
merce by mariners, the condition
of strange and distant peoples, all
mad news in those days. The
world seemed more interested in
the good and great things that
were going on than in the bad and
little things oi individual experi
ence. Perhaps it is Cor .this reason
that one rises from read jog an old
file of newspapers with a satisfac
tory sense of having gained in
formation, although the sheet is
tawny with time, and the men who
produced it are dirt and the events
it records are long gone by. The
old paper is a genuine history of
the world's doings in its day, of
such things as were not only of
moment to" the people then, but of
those which were to concern peo
ple yet to be.
It must be admitted that in these
respects the old newspaper is in
great contrast with the successor
of these days. Whether the pub
lic taste for news has changed, or
whether the news-gatherers are of
a different kind, there is a change,
which will make the press of to
day compare queerly in the future
with that of the eighteenth cci
tury.
A glance at the news oi the dtv
telegraphed to the- American piesss
from abroad, and also distributed
to the press from 2s'ew York, is
enough to furnish a text either for
a cynic or a moralist. The cable
brings from England the filth only
of the worst English high-life di
vorce cases, with every bit of de
cent reserve stripped from it.
For home news we have the
startling intelligence that a black
setter dog, "name unkown,"
jumped off a bridge iti New York
and was picked up and cared for
at a neighboring stable. In the
same oity.there was an extempore
prize fight between two boxers in
a drinking place. The. principals
were interviewed, and their affirma
tions and denials were wired as
carefully as if they affected the
standing of the public credit or
threatened a change in the map of
nations. Then follow several
lynchings, with lickerish descrip
tions of the crimes that caused
them, and a number of legal hang
ings, ornamented in the same wty.
Segregated from the rest of the
day's "hews," it is found that
these things constitute two-thirds
of it. The other third is compact
of suicides, 'some defalcations, a
few misrepresentations of public
men and quotations from the dif
ferent markets.
The inference is that the people
who gather and those who read
the news, are occupied for the
most part with follies, frailties,
calamities and crimes which oc
cur all over the world, and a vis
itor from another planet would
conclude that all we do here of
note is in the line of divorce, ii;
continence, slaying, sneakinj
slogging, lynching, lying and dev
ilment.
It is fortunate that the world is
i not as black as it is painted in'the
news. If it were, only the drastic
remedy which purged Sodom
would ever cleanse and-mike it fit
to live in.

It'is a singular fact that nine
out of ten of the "bums" aud
tramps brought into the station
house have on their person a shoe
buttoner. No ,rnatter what kind
ol shoes they vea, still they have
one of these simple instruments.
Lieut. Hambrock decided a week
ago to make a collection of the
shoe buttoners taken from the
prisoners brought into the Yremen
street station. In the seven days
they numbered eighteen, and like
young ladies do with their strings.

gether. He has now a chain some
three feet in length. A peculiar
thing is, that the hook end is bent
into a variety of -shapes. This
penchant for having buttoners at;
traded the attention of the de
tectives long ago, and it happened
to strike somo bright minded po
liceman that the little instrument
could be made to do the work of
a skeleton key, as far as the locks
in common use were concerned.
In leality, the shoe buttoner, to all
intents and purposes, was con
verted into a burglar's tool, and
still could be readily passed off as
a necessary implement in arrang
ing one's toilet. The possession
of a skeleton key is a serious of
fense and carries with it. convic
tion of a penal term. The lawr
however, cannot regard the shoe
buttoner as a contraband article,
and still the evil intending are as
well fortified with it as with the
burglar's favorite tool, since, when
properly shaped, it does the work
equally as well. The .expert can
pick a lock with one of these little
iron hooks with as much fncility as
if he had a skeleton key, and yet
if caught with it in his possession
enjoys immunity from the statute
covering the offense. Usually,
when one of these instruments is
found on a, prisoner's person, it is
thrown away, 'or perhaps given
back if the owner is released No
doubt in the course of a year sev
eral hundred are taken up by the
police. The amount of theft that
could be traced to them would
very probably prove startling.
