BUYING AHEAD.
A good cash customer is always
a favorite with dealers, says the
Industrial Gazette. "Whether
he be the daily laborer, purchasing
tHc necessary supplies for his fam
ily, or the merchant or manufac
turer, who is buying in large
quantities to handle again. And
in addition to bing in good favor,
the cash customer can get his
goods at a lower price than if he
is a continual credit purchaser.
This of itself would be an item if
it could be saved, leaving out the
fact that , as a rule, the cash cus
tomer will live cheaper, because
when he has the cabti on hand to
pay for what he is purchasing, of
ten apparently small items or
things will not seem as necessary
as when he is buying on credit.
No matter how financially good a
man may be, rich cr poor, or how
honest, there is always more or
less risk to the dealer in sell;ng
on credit. The dealer in selling:
on credit must, if he does a safe
business, take this risk into con
sideration in setting the price up
on his goods."
"Even when the dealer is care
ful to investigate the financial
standing of each of his customers,
hetrealizes th.it there is more or
less risk when he sells to only
those whose standing beais inves
tigation. A man may bo perfectly
honest and yet bo unable to pay a
debt that in the past has been
contracted. It may have been for
the necessaries of life that the
debt was made, but his present
necessities and those of his family
may take ail he can possibly earn,
and as a consequence he is unable
either to pay for what he has pur
chased on cradit or lay up any
thing for the future. The dealer
who sells on credit to the laborer
understands that this condition
may come to the front at any
time, and if he credits, must sell
at a price that will pay him for
running this risk.
"A great proportion of our la
boring men buy ahead. When
pay day comes, whether it is every
week or every month, the wages
they have earned are already
spent. Dealers have credited
them, and when pay day tioraes
what is received is paid out, and
they commence anew purchasing
ahead on the next payday. Everv
sensible man canseo that the deal
er who sells goods in this way is
running considerable risk. While
the laborer may be perfectly hon
e t an 1 w.U pay every dollar he
O es when he can, so many con
tingene'es may arise that it would
be an impossibility for him to pay,
and the dealer must, of necessity,
expect more or less loss. If he
does a safe business, supports his
family, and pays his debts, this
per cent, of loss that he suffers by
selling on credit mubt be added to
the piice of his goods and when
the credit customer purchases and
pays for his goods, he pays his per
cent, of this loss."
c,It is not easy to suggest a plan
that under all conditions would be
the best to enable the laboring
man to pay cash for what he pur
chases. In a majority of cases he
can only economize until he can
save a sufficient amount of his cap
ital to pay cash from one day to
another. Tlrs, of course, in many
cases would require good manage
ment. "When a man finds himself
just able to live and support his
family upon what he earns, it will
requ re some self-denial to save a
sufficient amount to be independ-'
ent and pay cash for his purchases;
but'once secuced-he will find that
he can live cheaper ind better, be
sides having the satisfaction of
knowing that he does not owe for
anything. And at the same time
he can lay the foundation for sav
ing something for a rainy day. If
he can economise sufficiently to
enable him to purchase the family
supplies and pay cash, he can in a
short time buy in larger quantities
and make another saving. And
these two points, with economy,
will enable him to commence lay
ing up something for a rainy day,
to either purchase a home or go
into business for himself."-
